  • What's up guys! For this video, I'll be discussing the differences I have noticed between Cambodian and American culture. Despite being born and raised in Long Beach, the city with the greatest population of Cambodian people, I still felt a bit of a culture clash when I lived in Cambodia for 9 months.
    If you guys are interested why I was living in Cambodia, please check this video out!

    Hello Kelsey Sry, I'm really happy to see your video describing about the Khmer culture. It's such an interesting and useful video, however, I'd like to recommend you a little bit about your video because you forgot to show us about one of the most important Khmer cultures. It's what we call 'Sampeah'. (The Sampeah (Khmer: សំពះ) is a Cambodian greeting or a way of showing respect.) Here's the symbol of Sampeah "🙏🙏🙏".

    • @KelseySry
      @KelseySry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you for the reminder! I actually have a funny story about Sampeah. When I grew up in Long Beach, I only interacted with older Khmer people so I always Sampeah when I greeted them. I didn't realize that this was only used for older people so when I went to Cambodia, I greeted everyone this way... tuktuk driver, little kids, a waitress at the restaurant. I got the weirdest stares until my friend later told me it's just a way to respect older people hahaha

    The word "bong" in Khmer is similar to how Black people or kids in Long Beach would use, "Sista or Bro". In Cambodia the language seem to changes through times it became more informal. There are word for Sir, Madam, My Lady, Miss ...ect. just ask your parent about them.

    Cambodia has Carl’s Jr., Burger King, Habit Burger, and many local chains and restaurants. It’s not hard to find a good burger. Pizza flourishes, too. Authentic Italian style, Domino’s, Pizza Company, Yellow Cab, Papa John’s, and many other shops: Boston Pizza, Brooklyn, Katy Peri Peri Pizza, etc.
    You can find almost any kind of food from around the world in Cambodia; it’s great.

    To address a stranger in America you could say, "Excuse me: Mister, Sir, Mam, Miss, Young Man, Young Lady". Friends often addressed each other with, "Dude", "Girl", "Man", "My Man", "My Main Man", "Girlfriend", "Sister", "Brother". Then there are all the affectionate things husbands and wives or couples call each other like, "Honey", "Sugar", Sweetheart", "Baby" and "Dear". It's not necessarily that different from a Native Cambodian's perspective who is trying to learn how to speak and act in America.

      depends what you're looking for! If you want to go to Angkor wat -> siam reap! If you're looking for more modern city vibes -> phnom penh. Each of the provinces in Cambodia has like its own specialty. Kampot (famous for durian)and Kep (famous for crab) are my favorite provinces.

Not sure what buses are still operating rn but if you look around online you can prob find some! I forgot which bus I took but I think from Phnom Penh to Kampot costed me less than $20 roundtrip via bus. (I booked online and I stayed in Kampot for like ~3 days). The titles when you don't know someone's name are definitely regional here in America. Mr., Mrs. Miss, Sir, Ma'am. It's gender forward and not one for all kin of thing. Then there's regional like the south Hun, darlin, sugar . It all depends on where you live.

  • @noblenb
    @noblenb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not all Cambodian people speak the same Khmer language. Khmer people have different dialects and cultures. It all the depend on where they are from in Srok Khmer or the neighboring countries. And those dialects and culture are unique in those region. I seem Khmer people argues saying to one another that they are not Khmer or they don't speak Khmer. A word having a positive connotation to one region and the same word having a negative connotation in another region.

    My Cambodian neighbors have zero respect for private property. They steal fruit from my yard. They have their children come on over to my lawn and driveway and run around when they have their own lawn and yard. Yes, we have a fence to divide the yards. They climb the fence, both parents and children to steal fruit. But worst of all, they play music until 4:00am Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They rent the house, I wish I knew the owners phone number so I could tell them what kind of tenants they rent to. I worked all of my life to buy my home and now I have these awful neighbors. But, they see us as inferior to them because we are Mexican and our other neighbors are black. So, they think they can do whatever they want. Sigh…
