I've made my version of this before but i used fresh strawberries. the tip for the pie filling is a great idea bc can't always have fresh on hand. yum! 🍓

Thats what I do. It helps both sides of the bread have that toasted texture. Love this recipe.
I think you can cook that bread second then cook the custard first then put the custard in the middle with the strawberry filling
