We'd point the two outdoor speakers toward the jungle beyond our firebase. (The speakers normally were pointed inward for occasional messages). Then with our piper in the communications bunker, he'd cut loose at the first signs of dawn. This litterly scared the daylights outta the NVA in the jungle! I am a direct ancestor on my mothers side of Dougal McCartney who was a member of the 77th of Foot, Montgomeries Highlanders who was wounded during Grants attack on Fort Duquense, now Pittsburg. He was mustered out and settled in what is now Altoona Pa. Family lived there until the early 20th century. The pipes still speak to me over the centuries.
I visited the land of my adopted father of Clan Bell, Donald Graham Bell. Clan BELL were one of the Border Reivers, riding clans that tormented the English, raiding across the border then back through the marshes. I was told that by my father's relatives that by the laws of Adoption "ye be a Scottie lad, we 'ave bled wid William Wallace, raided the bloody English 'til they deemed fit ta wipe us out. Ye be a Bloody Bell lad". As an American US Marine who served with the 1st Recon Battalion in I Corps, RVN, we used CLAYMORE mines on Lurp patrols. The Claymore was vicious and effective on cutting down with hundreds of double-00 buckshot. How fitting it was named after the mighty sword used by Wallace, the Braveheart.
Robert the Bruce is my 22nd Great-Grandfather. His daughter Marjorie Bruce married Walter Stewart, the 6th High Steward of Scotland (my 21st Great-Grandfather), and so the Stewarts & Bruces became one royal family.
