      @@Whatevadantewante I agree owner training is really hard sometimes. I try to train Freja to the ADA standard legitimacy of a dog that has been through a training organization. Owner trained service dogs are legitimate too. Do not give up on the training! Laura has really good videos and explains all the steps to help train perfectly. There should be standards to service dogs or education onthe ADA laws.

    Can I just say, I did not think I needed a psychiatric service dog when I bought my bully puppy, I realized how much I struggled to be in public alone or even with someone I knew. So I started service training later in her life, and I've struggled so much as a new handler. You have been helping me so much, and I really just want to say thank you.

      I have trained many pets to help me but never a service dog. My goal was things like helping me up hills. Now I have Mactel 2 and losing my sight. Thank you for helping me train him from 6 wks up the program. He will be joining full courses at 6 months. Let the goals begin. Please help me with normal expectations. My ego needs to realize this is a process. Not a race. I accept I need training too.

    I recently acquired a Goldendoodle. I’ve been training her to be my service dog. Right now I’ve mainly been concentrating on taking her everywhere I go. I’ve been teaching her to sit right next to me whenever I stop walking. She has been doing a lot of things on her own. Without me even teaching her. When she does, I reward her by giving her lots of praise and petting her. (She’s not into treats) For example: we were at the grocery store and a door in the back opened. A very large cart full of food to put on shelves came out. Well of course, she didn’t understand what it was. To her it looked very dangerous. So she pulled me out of the way by tugging on her leash. Also, if she thinks a pathway is too dangerous, she will refuse to go, and will direct me to another path. And she never barks.

    Mine was a five year old cattle dog before I trained him for my service dog. We started with short walks downtown. Then we moved up to non food stores. I always took him when foot traffic was at a minimum for each change. My final stage of training was trips into our local casino. Training time was with a short leash and a standard collar. His leisure time is with a thirty foot lunge line. He knows the short leash means he's on duty. I had no one to help me. We live in a small town. It was the amputation of my right foot that gave him a new job. Solid black shepherds are perfect for this work.

    I'm training my own dog because getting him professionally trained is too expensive, and I always feel like I'll get laughed out of the room bc i'm not blind or anything. I'm training him to help me get up from sitting down safely, as a support so i walk straight/don't fall over, and as someone capable of keeping my head safe and safely lowering me to the ground if i faint. Thank you for this!

I am training my own service dog too because I do not have the funds as well to get my dog professionally trained. Have you thought of working with the dog trainer at like a Petco or Petsmart ? They do have training classes and private lessons for less money. That is what I did with Freja!

      That is exactly why the law is worded the way it is. Service dogs are medical equipment and not everyone can afford to pay for a professionally trained service dog costing many thousands of dollars. Requiring everyone to buy a professionally trained service dog for their specific needs would effectively be denying a disabled person access to much needed medical equipment,. In otherwords it would be blatant discrimination based on your social standing, meaning if youre rich you can have a service animal, if youre poor you cant.

    If we don't regulate ourselves, and take responsibility, the gov will have to step in and do something. If your dog can't do the task, then the dog should not be presented as a service dog. I know I'm preaching to the choir here. A huge part of this is that few dogs actually have the temperament to ever be service dogs.

    Started training lobo in public access at the humane society. They have an outside cafe…coffee is not good, but we can train lobo in a restaurant setting. He “failed” some public access the other day..so, we know what we need to work towards. And distractions are great for the dog.

  • @AMilles1117
    @AMilles1117 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    When would you recommend starting to introduce training tasks for a service dog? Would you recommend focusing more on the public access preparation first and then introduce task training once they have a solid foundation, or would you introduce task training while training for public access?

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I introduce task foundations early on (nose touches, target training, retrieve foundations etc.) early on in conjunction with socialization. But I wait until the dog is 18 months at least to expect them to task in public. Basically, I train concurrently but am careful to protect the dog from any physically demanding tasks or highly emotional/potentially stress-inducing tasks like, for instance, panic attack response. Hope that helps!

    I live in Western Australia and most of the legislation around service dogs (they’re usually called assistance dogs in Australia) is very similar to the legislation around it in the USA.
    In 4 of our states and territories (Western Australia👌🏽, Australia Capital Territory, South Australia, and Queensland l) there is a government issued ID card that accredits your assistance dog and shows that you have trained your dog correctly and knows how to carry themselves in a non dog friendly environment.
    I know my ASiT isn’t ready to be in a grocery store and needs self regulation training (only found out that this is a thing yesterday 😮), but he is getting so much better with his self control and regulation that other people have made comments on how great he is and we’ve even gotten positive comments from people who have known him since the day I got him 😊
    I have had a lot of negative comments about him as well though.
    I live in the CBD so I took him for a walk around the main street to do distraction training, we crossed the street and since Hades loves kids and food he got really excited about it. The man who was carrying the kid actually said “that’s an assistance dog?” while giving Hades and I looks of disgust and disdain, I had my usual response ready: “yeah, he’s still in training though”, he then just said “clearly” and walked away.
    When I decided to get an assistance dog, I did a deep dive on what breeds are good at it and was totally looking at German shepherd dogs, and dobermans.
    The prices for an unvaccinated, backyard bred individual dog are staggering, literally $5000AUD +/- a few hundred dollars to a couple thousand dollars.
    The registered breeders have been charging less than the backyard ones. 😢
    So instead I got a puppy from a local family who lives on a hobby farm and decided to get a bullmastiff/American staffy mix because I need a dog for mobility as well as feeling better about living in a single household with my PTSD.
    The fact that he’s roughly 45kg/99lbs doesn’t help with the discrimination we get because he’s not one of the traditional breeds associated with assistance/service dogs 😐
    I have just started an instagram account for him if anyone made it this far and wants to see the differences in his behaviour as we work towards him being a working service dog: @helperhoundhades

      Unfortunately paid way too much money for getting only the harness, leash and collar from a company that is like so many others although they claimed to offer training, I struggle daily with depression, anxiety and panic attacks as well as CPTSD… but I live in United States, living on a fixed income… retired early from working cos of failing health. Problem is my dog is a long haired chihuahua and have raised her from birth and can’t afford a service dog, let alone afford training! She’s already 4 yrs old, I tell most people that she’s an emotional service dog cos there is a difference … do u know that emotional support dogs on banned on most commercial flights? Have researched a lot on this, but my dog is so well behaved… she hardly barks, only whines some when we are getting ready to go bye bye… have a stroller that she rides in that I bought from Amazon a few years ago. I recently had to change primary doctors cos my stupid doctor said that my dog was a liability… she never barks, growls or even whines… just cos she’s a emotional support dog and not a service dog- she can no longer go with me there! Such discrimination! My little dog has never bit anyone… but she will lick u to death literally… most people she shies away from when they want to reach inside her carrier but she doesn’t growl, bark or snap at them- my problem is as i age more am worried about my vertigo getting worse and am worried about my mobility problems… but I usually lean on her carrier

    I’m wondering if there’s an age limit to wear service dogs can take these tests. Petco has a AKC canine good citizen group classes to help prep for the test. Laura, do you know if there’s any group classes for the urban canine CGC and the AKC community test? I am training towards the CGC. Atlas requires their dogs to pass the CGC as a prerequisite. I want Freja to take all these tests to structure the training more.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Puppies have to be at least 6 months old to take the test. There is no upper limit. I haven't seem many group classes for the higher level CGCs but general high-level obedience or "out and about" classes would likely cover similar topics.

    • @nicoledelieto1735
      @nicoledelieto1735 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ well Freja will be two years old when she takes the CGC. At the moment, I am unable to get her into the group class at Petco for the CGC. My Petco trainer told me that she needs more training with the fundamentals. Freja is not yet ready,but almost ready. I just had another private lesson with my trainer. We worked on the down and under and the heel position. I am having problems with the coordination part which affects my Asperger’s syndrome. I have been having problems training Freja on the more complex tasks . Freja is doing beautifully in her training so far. I have her back out in public on smaller outings. She is going through a period where she’s getting a little bit more anxious and about to turn 2.

    • @nicoledelieto1735
      @nicoledelieto1735 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ Laura, I have another question! What type of desensitizing exercises can I do with Freja to get her back into busier crowds during the evenings. I tried to take Freja to Fred’s for a small errand. She did not want to go past the door. I think the bell scared her ,and I reacted to the bell. Freja has not been out in public for a while at night around Christmas time. I put her gentle lead on just to try to work with her through the distraction. I did take her to Walmart for an hour and a half in the crowd and she did fine. I also had her gentle lead on.

  • @nicoledelieto1735
    @nicoledelieto1735 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I always take Freja out for public access training. She has been to many different non-pet, friendly, and pet friendly stores. She has walked on sidewalks, crossways, does elevators really well, she has been on buses, she has been on many different cars and trucks, I still need to get her on a train. She has been to transit centers. I know it takes two years to train a service dog yourself. Is there a requirement for how long I need to have those test done? We are getting ready for the AKC canine good citizen group class, and test at Petco. I might put for it in a group class in July. I’ve had to train myself since I do not have the funds for the training. I do need to get the help of a trainer to help me train Freja in more complex public access situations. I have a great relationship with my Petco trainers that I worked with with. I do need the structure since it is hard for me to maintain structure. Part of the Asperger’s syndrome is the executive dysfunctioning. I need to have a routine. Freja needs a lot more training. I take her out for walks in the neighborhood and to the park by our house.

    Good video... I didn't hear if you said it or not, is people need to realize that not all Dogs are fit or capable of becoming service dogs. Some dos have faced trauma, or things that have happened in their past that makes it IMPOSSIBLE. Also, not all breeds are suitable for service dog responsibilities.

    • @eden-qi4yd
      @eden-qi4yd ปีที่แล้ว +1

      what are some of the main breeds that you see used for service work, that probably shouldn’t be?

    • @jamesburgess731
      @jamesburgess731 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @eden-qi4yd it's usually less breed driven and more poor partnering (life style/pace) and second it's the history of the individual dog. Some dogs have faced trauma during their fear periods, some didn't receive proper training early or properly exposed to indoor living.
      And honestly, I believe a huge thing that often gets overlooked is the training of the handler themselves. It requires patience and commitment and some people just aren't wired that way.

    • @jamesburgess731
      @jamesburgess731 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @letsgoammy7765 it would be tough to know without assessing the dog in person. There are good assessment tests out there that focus on focus, patience, what they're driven by, and reactions to stimulus. Beyond demeanor, it's also important to have medical tests run for heart issues, hip dysplasia, etc.

      They're both super cute! I'm not totally sure where you're shopping but I highly recommend that you only visit pet friendly stores with your puppy until he's ready to move up to non-pet friendly experiences. It's also a good idea to make sure the puppy is engaged in training when you're in stores with a vest on. This sets the tone for his "working clothes" vs non-working time.

      The business of dog training is totally unregulated. That being said, I highly recommend going through a formal program that includes hands on curriculum, and/or apprenticing. Check out Karen Pryor Academy and Academy for Dog Trainers (jean donaldson) for more formal training. Check out Atlas Assistance Dog's Facilitator Program for a volunteer service dog position that could be helpful as well in deciding if service dog training is a path you'd enjoy. Im looking into getting a lab to train as my PSD and am looking into classes like the CGC but the public access test is so expensive 😞 While I am thankful the ADA doesn't require documentation or training, I noticed the paperwork to fly with a service dog requires the name of a trainer or organization that trained the dog to perform tasks. Does that mean I do need to do a training course or would I list myself as the trainer? Granted I did get a dog trainer certificate online by taking a course but you can het just about anything online these days 😂 I want my PSD trained the right way and treated the right way, not just for my benefit but also to avoid being the cause of future problems I see with the allowance of service animals do to the fakers 😞

If their disability is effecting a major life function, AND a dog could help mitigate a portion of the disability without causing their life to be more challenging (because taking care of, raising, financially supporting, training a service dog is a ton of work) than they might be a good fit for your friend.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Laura!
      Welcome to the channel. Dog training is an unregulated industry, unfortunately, which means anyone can say they are a service dog trainer.
      That being said, I generally recommend starting with volunteering with an Assistance Dog International accredited organization or guide dog school. At the same time you could go through a general dog training program like Karen Pryor Academy or Jean Donaldson's Academy. Once you've had experience with pet dogs, then I recommend a more formalized service dog program. I would check out Atlas Assistance Dogs. Another path that might work is becoming an Atlas Assistance Dog Facilitator which is a volunteer position that includes lots of free education.
      That all being said, generally rescues have a relatively low success rate as service dogs. That's not to say there aren't individuals that would be a good fit, but I would definitely check out this article I wrote that will help explain why using rescues doesn't give the owner-trainer the highest rate of success: www.doggyu.com/post/2022/05/19/how-to-choose-a-service-dog-breeder/
      The health ambiguity alone presents a very real problem to investing a ton of time, money and resources into training a dog of unknown genetic origin into a service dog. While a few organizations do this, most use well-bred, health-tested animals, and still have a 30-50% success rate. Again, not that rescues can't be service dogs; one of the best service dogs I ever trained was an adult black lab. But that's the exception, not the norm. Here's another video that can help you assess temperament and the type of dog that would do well with this work: th-cam.com/video/I_oC3hCRYDQ/w-d-xo.html

      @DoggyU  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tracey!
      So you can absolutely train multiple types of tasks for your service dog. That being said, you also want to be conscious of how much responsibility and potential stress you're putting on your dog. One of the reasons most guide dog schools won't cross-train for other types of tasks/disabilities outside of guiding is that guiding can be a really stressful/responsibility-heavy job for a dog, so adding more things might put undue stress on the dog where other medical aids or tools might be a better fit to mitigate a portion of your disability. So, you'd have to evaluate your dog and your situation.

    My new next-door neighbor in our four-unit one-story apartment "complex" has what she calls a service dog, a very small overly excited half poodle and God knows what else combo. We have no fencing here. I was surprised she was allowed to have a dog here; nobody else has any pets here. The neighbor is a small lady, younger than I am, and she said she's had multiple surgeries in the past on her spine, upper and lower, and recently had surgery on one wrist. She appears to be in pain most of the time, moves slowly but has no problem hopping up into her jeep and driving out of here like a maniac, lol. She does a bit of walking the dog out front and back on a very long leash. The dog is allowed by this lady to wrap the leash around her legs. I actually told this lady I figure the dog will be the death of her, and she just laughed. She had asked me once to walk the dog a bit, and the damn little thing spotted a guy down the street on a riding mower and easily got off the leash and ran straight toward that mower. I'm 70 but managed to grab the dog and told her sorry, I wasn't gonna kill myself running after any dog at my age. She was insulted and responded, "Well, you have to know how to train the dog." Shouldn't a service dog at least be larger and a calmer breed?

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Christine,
      Training methodology can be really polarizing for people. You'll notice that while I use positive reinforcement methods, I don't specifically advertise my training style often, as my goal is to bring people into the R+ world without making them feel badly about the way they currently train. I don't think there's a ton to be gained by arguing with people on the internet. The way I handle is is to just try to lead by example (and create educational content). I call it "shut up and show off". My biggest complements have come from balanced trainers who can't believe the results I get without the use of aversive tools.
      But specifically for what you're talking about, I guess I would think of it this way; I don't eat meat. But I don't go onto meat-eaters youtube pages and talk about being a vegetarian. It just wouldn't go over well :)
      Hope that helps!

People are primed to argue at this period in time about balanced and R+. Don't take it personally for sure, because it's the opposite of personal, it's just a social moment. Stick to what your heart tells you when working with your dog and you'll be loved by your dog. Comment on videos that warm your heart and don't comment on the ones that break your heart. Your lack of comment is enough to prevent those videos from getting more attention. I'm glad you are building a good relationship with your dog, and I hope you can stay focused on communities that respect your positive approach to dog training. ❤

      One name, Zac George, he is the major problem, his zealots who follow him and do his dirty work are lulled by the emotional and fallacious arguments he uses and often do not have the skillset to train a dog to find itself out of a wet paper bag.
      Balanced training is a viable option and does have its place and is necessary in some circumstances. Even then in balanced training it is 90-95% force free, if you're using the four quadrants of operant conditioning, you're not actually training positive only or force free. The use of aversive training tools do have their place, such as dogs with high aggression or reactivity and are one step away from euthanasia are good candidates for such training, but people fail to realize these tools are not to be used in a punitive fashion and they are weaned off these tools the same way other dogs are weaned off of treat rewards. If everyone would be a little more open minded and look at the broader picture with critical thought and reason, educate themselves instead of listening to weak "arguments" consisting of straw man, ad hominem and other fallacious logic, the two training camps can actually start to respect each other.

      There's nowhere in the ADA that says your dog has to be locked on to you with eye contact. If it's something you desire, you can definitely build it up gradually over time. I like training offered eye contact which you can start with this video: th-cam.com/video/SFTDHi6QCR8/w-d-xo.html

    How can I give my school the papers proving she is properly trained?

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically you need to prove that you have a disability, not that the dog is trained professionally. In the US you do not have to have professional training for your service dog.

    I have a long list of conditions that come with being born with one specific fd up genetic condition.... I found a very smart dog dumped because she got pregnant on her first heat and already shows signs when my body is acting up (she looks at me funny and jumps at me naturally). I don't like being jumped on because falling and hitting my chiari head is far more dangerous than a normal person. This video is a review about service dogs, not a training video.

      If you are not disabled, you do not meet the legal requirements for having a service dog and are not able to train your dog as a service dog, nor legally fly them in a plane as anything other than a pet. Representing your dog as a service dog without it being task trained for your disability is a crime. There are, however, a few airlines now that do accomodate pets like BARK airline, but they are relatively cost-prohibitive.
      Just for those who are reading this's benefit: service dogs are not allowed to fly in a seat. They are required to be in your footspace or on your lap.

    It can be trying and irritating to have a service dog right now in this world. People are all the time just watching for your dog to fail so that they can call your dog a fake and call you out. Or at least that's how you all the time, like you're being looked at because of all the internet videos of that exact thing. When you add that to owner training your dog you have imposter syndrome times 100! Some days it is really hard to deal with.

    She is correct. However the laws are changing. Many states can now denie ESA fir housing ect.Also they are allowed to ask what kind of job does your dog do. A service dog has to have a job or its ESA Airlines are also dening ESA animal. Yes this is legal under ADA. Stop relaying in the. There is no required tesr and they cany ask for paperwork. That is slowy changing. The things I have mentioned are loopwholes. Companies, Business landlords are able to use now.

    I wish we had a CGC evaluator here. Oh, we have several, but I refuse to have my dog evaluated by any of them. They all require you to take a class (fees ranging from $300 to over $1,000) to prepare for the exam. Okay, I'll go for that. Oh, wait. No, I won't go for that. Every single one of them is a "balanced" trainer (if you're a balanced trainer, great for you, but I see absolutely no reason whatsoever to use a shock collar or a prong collar on my 8 1/2 pound friendly boy and as his guardian, I absolutely refuse to do that and I can live just fine without a CGC, thank you very much) who insists on using "corrections" if the dog makes a mistake. I hope you don't use painful punishment on humans if they make a mistake or do something you don't like. Sorry, but no way am I paying someone to jerk my dog around or shock my dog.

      Hi Jan! Where are you located? I might be able to give you a recommendation for a positive reinforcement-based trainer in your area.
      I do understand when trainers would like you to take a class before the CGC, as teaching classes is one way that trainers earn a living *and* make sure that your dog is prepared and you don't pay for a test that you're not ready for. But in any event, I definitely understand not wanting to give your money to someone with a training style that you don't agree with. Happy to help you try to find an evaluator in your area!
      But again, not required. But you could have a friend administer the test for you, like I mentioned in the video to see how you do! Great way to practice!

      @@janhankins911 Hey Jan! So I did some digging and it looks like this company is R+ based. While they don't directly outline a CGC class, I'd email and ask if any of their people are evaluators. There's several trainers there that hold certifications and I'm guessing one of them is an evaluator. Hope that helps! www.dogstokevin.com/
