I do believe you can continuous charge the battery whilst shooting via usb c. I link to an Anker Power delivery pack to charge whilst shooting. I think this would work with a mains usb c charger plugged in
You're welcome. I actually have not tested the Webcam App by Canon on my M1. But the resolution wasn't great the previous times I tested it… so I am very happy using the HDMI capture cards I have.
Hi, the GoPro 8, 9, 10, and 11 work just plugged in via USB C to A, with the GoPro software. Looks pretty good, but obvs not DSLR quality, and they only output at 1080p.
The display will always turn off after 30 minutes. There is no way of changing this except to touch a button (half press the shutter for example). However, the camera can be set to never turn off the HDMI output.
These days many cameras support USB webcam feature. I have a Sony ZV 1 which can directly be used as webcam using the USB streaming feature. But there are limitations in resolution and audio routing. Only up to 720p is supported. The Camlink 4k is way better in quality.
Hi Neil, that is true. Sony, Canon, GoPro (and probably others) do have features like that. However only with quality limits as you already pointed out. In the case of Canon it's not even 720p for example. And to be honest, nowadays with the option of cheap 1080p HDMI capture cards for like 15€ it's kind of a no brainer to go that route.
@@ChrisSpiegl I did not use a Canon but even the 720p on Sony seems gimmicky in these days of 4k. I had used a USD 10 no brand HDMI capture card and worked well enough. But suddenly it stopped working during a stream and then I bought the Camlink 4k. The cheap card still works but I'm reluctant to rely. But it is a very good option.
@@NeelsWorld Thanks for your update. I think the CamLink 4k is great but overkill for most. The cheap cards have worked great for us, even doing 3-4 hours of active work. I now use the ATEM Mini mostly because that gives more options and the ability to record. So my computer does not have to do that part 👍.
@@ChrisSpiegl yes, Camlink 4k is a costly investment. The cheap cards work well and give the most bang for the buck. One should get one instead of sticking to the oem USB method for better quality.
My Canon R5 works well connecting the USB micro right into my Mac Pro. Ecamm immediately detects it and it works. But I'm not sure if the quality is as good or not. I just got the Elgato Cam Link and am trying it now.
If I'm not mistaken the Nikon Z5 , 6 and 6ii can be used as a webcam through the usb port and just using the Nikon webcam utility I think. I've used it for zoom meetings
That sounds very helpful. I have not used Nikon cameras but I know that Canon has a similar program. However, the resolution (of the Canon Webcam Utility) is not even 1080p… but at least it works.
That was a great video Chris. Two questions if I may. Firstly did you notice any audio lag or video lag when you are using it on Skype or Zoom? Secondly, did you film this video using the Canon EOS-R? If so, what lens did you use with it? Thanks again for this video. Very useful !
Yes, the HDMI capture card does give you a much better result. However, you can also choose a cheap capture card and don't have to purchase the CamLink 4k (if you don't need 4k).
It's a HDMI - HDMI cable that goes from the camera to the Elgato CamLink 4k and then the CamLink is connected to the laptop via USB or a USB to USB-C Adapter.
did you have to purchase a micro USB to HDMI cable separately? my canon eos m50 mark II did not come with one and wonder if buying a separate one is what is needed. my mirco USB cable plugs in at a USB source currently.
Hi Chris. When I use OBS for recording or live streaming, I always get the autofocus square following me around and I can't seem to switch it off unless I use the EOS utility desktop all and run it in the background. Is there a way to live stream via the Canon EOS R directly into OBS without having to open the Canon Utility app? If so, how can I remove the white square that follows me around. Also another comment on the tutorial, you went through a lot of camera functions fairly quickly and it was very tough to catch up..
Thank you for your feedback 🌸 that's always interesting to read (funny enough: I recently have been getting a lot of comments from people telling me to speed things up 🙈 - who knows how that's gonna go). In terms of video capture and the white square: What you are seeing there can have two reasons. One is that you are not in video mode but in photo mode. You can switch between them by pressing the mode dial and then info to get into video shooting mode. Then there is another setting where you can switch the HDMI display setting between "internal + clean external" and "external with display info". You will want to chose the "Internal + Clean External" setting. That setting may be hard to find, it's also not really in those words, but it's there I'm sure. Just can't confirm right now. With that you will get a clean HDMI signal which you then capture with whatever HDMI video capturing device you'd like to use.
@@ChrisSpiegl thanks Chris! I will give it a try. yes I was in photo mode and not video mode.. As for the HDMI, I couldn't find that setting.. I thought I had the Canon EOSR but I have the EOS RP.. I know I wasn't impressed with myself when I realized I couldn't read the type of my camera correctly.. anyway :) Is there another function/ path to get a clean HDMI signal for the EOS RP?
@@ConversationswithLoulou Great, that's one step closer I guess. Here is a video that shows the settings on the EOS RP as far as I can see: th-cam.com/video/f-RliOOyDCM/w-d-xo.html Hope that helps.
The EOS Utility has nothing to do with the Elgato Camlink. You need to use either the Elgato streaming program, OBS, or just use the webcam in another program like Skype or so.
Hi Chris, if you're on a Mac, you can connect a Canon camera without any capture card, by using Ecamm Live software. And with the pro subscription you can use the feed as a virtual webcam in any other software :)
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks I didn't know it was up to 720p only. Oh by the way they've just announced additional compatibility for other brands by I didn't manage to connect the a6600 yet. Got to go through the HD60S+
Great video! Thank you. You did say to let you know if there was a camera that you could plug in without a capture card. I used my eosR for two weeks without one. Plugged it in by usb-c using CamTwist and Camera Live software. But it now has stopped working. No idea why. 🤷🏽♂️
I would take the Zoom H4n and connect it to the Computer via USB and then use that as my microphone. But if you don't want to do that, you can also use the Line-Out of the Zoom H4n and connect that to your camera and use that. The Elgato CamLink does provide the sound from the cameras mic to the computer. So that works either way. Good luck.
When using the video capture, do you need a memory to be inserted in the camera?? Because I have a Canon 700D and the memory card port does not work, please let me know this is an option.
Can you please suggest best lens for Can EOS R Camera 🎥 ? and I’m currently using default one 24-105mm f/4-7.1 Lens (3075C032) ,so, I would like to buy some advanced lens for this Camera, please suggest on it. Thank you 🙏
Suggestions like this are basically never possible because I and anyone else do not know your main use case. The best thing you can do is look which focal length you use most and then look what Canon has on offer in those areas. For example: you use your 24-105 mostly in the 24 - 35mm range? Maybe it'd be great to get the 15-35mm f/2.8? Or you mostly use 70-105? Could look into the 70-200mm f/4 or f/2.8. Or you look for primes in the most used focal length areas. Like: a fixed 35mm, 50mm, or 85mm.
The super expensive Elgato capture cards (or other brands) are no longer needed for Most recent Canon DSLRs and mirrorless cameras: in early May Canon USA released a beta version of ‘eos utility’ which allows a lot of Canon cameras to be used as webcams in OBS studio, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc. It does not cover all models at the time of release, and it is low Rez: 1024x576 for my 6D Mark II which still looks way way better than laptop webcams or other webcams. Users report being able to use this in the US (obviously), Britain and Canada (I suspect it works if your region’s set up is ‘English’. Works for me in Canada. CameraLabs channel did an hour long live stream with this set up a few days ago.
For MacBook Pro are you saying I need another adapter to go between the cam link and the hdmi port? I am getting the audio to come through but not the image.
Hey man! Thanks for video! Some questions, maybe you tried: 1. Has it any sense to use CLog3 over Cam Link 4k? 2. Can Ninja V increase quality? 3. How to reduce "digital" look and have more cinemtic look over Cam Link 4k? Thanks in advance.
That is only partially true. Yes you can use the canon EOS Webcam Utility - however, that does not provide audio to your computer and it also does not provide 4k (not even 1080p). I have a comparison of the cam link vs. the Usb solution on my channel here: th-cam.com/video/HEZl2YlWMek/w-d-xo.html So the usb solution works. It’s just not as good as a cam link (or a cheaper alternative).

Hello Chris! Can you message how I can live stream my kids football games to TH-cam, Facebook or Instagram? Is that even an option to do? I have a canon EOS r10. Do I have to get the items you’re speaking of on this video? I have a laptop to take to games if I need to. But prefer not to. Please let me know. Thank you in advance
You could live stream directly from your phone. There are streaming apps / or you use the TH-cam app straight up. Alternatively, you can connect the R10 to your laptop via USB and it can work as a camera for the live stream as well. I am not 100% (I don't own the R10) you may need to download a Canon Webcam utility to connect the camera.
Hi. What camara do u recomend for a livestream church service, with good autofocus, full frame qualitt budget camera, or this "overpriced camera" still the best one? What about the canon eos rp? Ty
For this use case I would recommend a camera that does 1080p and auto focus and I would most likely go with a Sony camera. Despite using Canon at the moment myself. I am constantly looking at the Sony a6400 because it can record for longer than 30 minutes, has HDMI output, a microphone input, and features interchangeable lenses. Now, it's not full frame but non the less an incredible camera. In the Full Frame are I'd say the RP is a great camera, however, maybe the Sony a7 would also be a good choice there. they are affordable and have 1080p as well. Of course you can always go higher with the money spending. But keep in mind that for a quality life stream you just need 1080p and not 4k. So you can easily look at models that are not the newest. Good luck and happy streaming.
I want to connect my EOS R to android tablet S8 ultra ; to use it as a monitor for my cam . how can I get the best quality 4k results?? And do u recommend a specific Vedio capture card ???
If it is possible to use a UVC type camera model (aka a usb webcam), then you could use something like the CamLink 4k which is a very nice HDMI capture card. Though, if you only want to use it as a monitor, I also wouldn't mind using less than 4k since the S8 Ultra screen is not big enough to really see a huge difference between 4k and 1080p.
Hello Chris, Great video, thanks! I am using Canon R7 camera for Facebook livestream and I am having an issue, my camera goes to sleep after 30 min. Could you please tell me what I should do to avoid this. My live-streamings are usually longer than 30 min. Please help! Thanks.
There is a setting in the Video settings of the R type cameras which is "auto power off" and you have to set this to "never" or whatever the menu options are.
At 2:20 you mention that you could use the USB connection w/ EOS Utility but say "that's not what we're going for." I'm confused as to why not save the money on a capture card and instead just use the USB connect with EOS Utility to get to a live stream? Is there a difference in quality? I'm just not sure why you would have EOS Utility available and then not use it.
very helpful video I will buy now the cam link+mini hdmi to hdmi for my Canon EOS M50. How I wish they her 4K resolution with webcam from elgato to avoid connecting digitcal camera cuz hard everytime to plug and and plug. I prefer permenant webcam to place on monitor and Keylight.
I made a video about that th-cam.com/video/Di3esm3odVc/w-d-xo.html However… latest release (aka a7sIII) made me kinda regret it. 😅 My main reasons were (at the time): - missing the canon form factor - not having a flip screen on the Sony cameras - colors of canon Now… I would think thrice. And I am actually considering a a7c, a7s3 and the a6400 line for different projects. Namely because they all shoot 30min+!
Hi Chris Any chance you can have a video on similar to this but using multiple camera. I lookjng to do live for my Church using 2 camera( live on TH-cam). Not sure what other device should i buy?thank you so much
You can run the mic through the camera. My partner uses that setup with the rode wireless go for yoga sessions. Personally, I mostly use the Zoom F6 and the Oktava MK 012 or the Shure Beta 57a (for podcasts) and those are connected via XLR to the F6 and that via USB to the MacBook. The downside however is that there is a couple milliseconds difference in the video which you don’t have when using the mic connected to the camera directly. Happy streaming. 🌸
Does this Cam Link and OBS work well with 5D Mark IV Canon on a Mac? Thanks as this info would help me decide whether to buy a Cam Link or not. I've got a 5D Mark IV camera and need to start recording music videos.
Hey Dan, I don't own the 5D IV. The best thing is to check the Elgato website for the CamLink compatible cameras. The one thing you have to look out for is if the camera can output a clean HDMI feed (and I would assume the 5D IV does that). Then it would work 👍.
@@dandna1855 That's great, but it's not the same as a clean HDMI output. The internal and the external LCD are different from each other and for the Cam Link you'd need the HDMI output. But it looks like you are in luck as this video shows how it would be setup: th-cam.com/video/XDYsfViUtx0/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for the video. Very informative and actionable content. I've been following these steps using the cam link 4k and a canon eos r and dummy battery. Everything was going well with the setup. The problem begins after the dummy battery is plugged in. The moment that the cam link plugs in to the computer's usb port, my canon eos r screen goes blank & PC does not recognise the camera. Changing the camera settings doesn't seem to help. Can someone tell me how to fix this? I've been working on it for a while with no success. Thanks
I'm interested to know what camera you are using now to shoot this video. I've been trying to get the kind of setup clarity you have now with the m50 to no avail. Would appreciate any comments and how this can be achieved. I want the front to be lit up like yours but the back to be a bit dark.
Very good orientation, thanks! In my situation, you helped me to notice that it’s too much technical consideration for me. So will need to consider a simple web cam. 👍
That is an absolutely valid choice for many. You really need to take all aspects into consideration from camera, cables, power, and the capabilities of the cameras. So, for some it surely is best to chose a product that offers it as a done deal. Glad this video was helpful for you in this way. 🌸
Hey Chris : do you have the camera settings to use for the Sony A6500 or A7 ii. I cant get out of the 60 fps. . Meaning my capture /streaming soft always captures at 60 fps which is making the audio to video out of sync.. thanks
Hi, I don't have the Sony A7ii here to take a look but it should be possible to switch to movie mode, then set the frame rate and also go into the HDMI settings and see if that's setup correctly it should give you the right fps signal. However, you are describing that you are seeing audio drift / out of sync audio, that should not be an issue either way - unless you have the mic connected directly to your computer and the camera in a different way. Then, of course, you should be able t use audio sync settings (in OBS under "Advanced Audio Preferences" or something like that). Let me know if this helped or if I may be able to give you more details in another way. Cheers.
@@ChrisSpiegl thanks for replying. I tried it on the A6500 . In movie mode I can get it to see the Camlink. However it always says 1080 p at 60 fps. Even though the camera is set in movie mode/4K at 24 fps? .
@@billbuckleytutorials my suggestion is to look deeper into the menu settings and there look for the HDMI output. That may be set up differently. Sorry that I can’t be more helpful. But I don’t have the Sony cameras here. 😅 so I don’t know them menues very well.
Hello, looking for a suggestion. The 5D Mark IV needs to have the LCD screen off in order to stream longer than 30 minutes. We have it off and have just controlled the camera via phone or computer. Today, somehow the wifi is off on the camera and since the screen is off, I have no way to access either the screen setting or the wifi settings. I can't operate the menu screen in the blind. Do you have any suggestions for accessing either please? Or even a factory reset, but I can't even see to do that. Is there another way? Thank you!!
I would try unplugging the HDMI cable or switching the mode dial to a different mode than the one it is in right now. That should give you the monitor back? Maybe that works.
Mine is the Canon EOS R - no number. It was the first canon Mirrorless and it still has the mini HDMI instead of the micro. Luckily the cable clamp 🗜️ is pretty good on the newer cameras to hold the micro hdmi in place.
Hi! I am using the same excat set-up with the EOS R and the Elgato Cam Link, I have the Power Saving settings set to 30 min. Disable and Disable, However for me when that 30 minutes is up and the LCD turns off the HDMI output shuts off as well so I have to touch the screen to wake it back up or restart the camera. Do you have any idea why this might be the case?
Do you by any possibility have the camera in Photo mode instead of video mode? And if it is in video mode, do you have the HDMI out set to the clean hdmi signal? I have never had this happen with my settings.
@@ChrisSpiegl Turns out it was the "HDMI Display" setting, I had it on just display for computer but according to the manual, it won't override the timer unless it is set to both computer and camera options!
From one of the shots that you showed in the video, it's quite redundant to use a slip on pop filter with another pop filter held in front of the mic - especially when that pop filter is touching the microphone. Otherwise, nice video.
Shouldn't be touching the mic as far as I remember and the sound was better with both used in conjunction. But I get your point. Hope you found this video helpful.

I currently use my EOS REBEL T7 , through its USB port , rather then using the mini hdmi with a capture card attached , this works ok for me , but I’m looking to get the cam link because although it works most of the time , it caps me at a certain cam quality and says I need to buy the EOS Webcam utility premium to unlock the full 1080 at 60 FPS .
@@ChrisSpiegl Is this device worth to purchase although I get a good frame rate and video quality ? And you caught me by surprise on this one … what else should I work on ?
I realize your shot the EOS canon video two months ago but since then Canon has released a beta stream utility and was wondering if using the Elgato link and cam in conjunction with the canon beta app (USB connection) is advisable or is it overkill? I’m trying to go through Vmax so use my canon USB cable to go into Vmax and then when I stream out to you to Facebook to go via the Elgato.
With most Canon cameras the auto focus still works when using HDMI. I can not guarantee that though. But cameras like the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV or Canon EOS R, R5, RP, etc… still work. That I know.
Very good video, thanks! But I have a doubt recently I bought a Canon M200 for streaming, and a cheap capture card (from amazon) it manages 1080p 30fps. What is the best setting to configure? Leave the camera at 1080p 30fps or 60fps?
I would go with 1080p 30fps. This also gives you a better motion blur which looks more natural for human interaction. It also will be less work on your system and the capture card.

The CamLink 4k is still great - but very expensive. There are way cheaper alternatives on the market I would recommend to buy. They may not provide 4k but most people also don't need that and are fine with a 1080p signal. So… yea, overall still a great setup and one we use every week.

Yes, mic connected to the camera will automatically transmit through the HDMI and by that be available as a audio input on the computer (in OBS, Zoom, etc).
Brother pls can u help me my question to u is capture card has 2 side so In camera which cable we need and other side of elgato which we connect to pc at that side which cable we need pls answer.
The Capture card probably has one HDMI port and a USB stick looking side. The USB-Stick looking one is going to the PC and the HDMI side is the one where you have the connection to your camera. The cable you need depends on your camera because some have mini HDMI or micro HDMI ports and the capture cards usually have full size HDMI ports.

I have searched the internet high and low to solve the problem of the black screen that seems to plague connecting the camlinks usb type A through the macbooks usb type C/thunderbolt connection.
That is right. Newer cameras often have these modes to be able to use them as UVC (Webcam) cameras. However, many limit the resolution (though I am not sure what the R6 Mark II does here). TBH: If I would not have two EOS R cameras at this time, I'd go straight for the R6 Mark II and buy that one, since it's a much more capable camera on the video side. Especially with the 6-hour record limit!
Great Video! Question. What are you using to record audio? Are you able to hook up an external mic? Does the mic input on the EOS R transfer the audio across? Thanks

hi how does this compare to using the "EOS Utility". I've been using that for about a week and I have to say its quite tricky. I'm using OBS to capture the "webcam signal" from my EOS R and most of the time OBS doesn't detect the camera. I need a solution more reliable so I'm considering using the cam link as an alternative but will this solution improve in terms of reliability and quality of image?
Hello 4CiTieSuk, the answer to that is very simple: HDMI Capture FAAAAR outweighs the Canon EOS Utility Webcam capture… in quality, reliability, and features. I have two videos I would recommend you watch: 1) EOS Utility and it's downsides: th-cam.com/video/HEZl2YlWMek/w-d-xo.html 2) a cheaper alternative to the CamLink 4k: th-cam.com/video/zK4hhbadQQI/w-d-xo.html Note: The Elgato CamLink 4k can capture 4k and you can stream / record a 4k signal (if you have the EOS R in 4k mode). The cheap alternative mentioned in the video (2) only captures 1080p (but for live streaming that is usually enough. Hope that helps and have fun. PS. One of the most important aspects: with the HDMI capture cards, you can actually also capture the in-camera audio which keeps it in sync (and it has fewer delays than the EOS Utility).
@@ChrisSpiegl that's really awesome to hear. Thanks so much Chris. I'll check out the videos. Do you get those benefits as well with the cheaper alternative? Also, I'm really annoyed that the EOS R crops the video in 4K. I don't have enough space in the room I'm shooting to place the camera further away to capture me when in 4K so I'm forced to go 1080p, which feels like a sin considering the price of the camera. I also have the RF 1.2 50mm which would be AMAZING to be able to use in 4K but the crop there is even worst and can only shoot videos of my nose hairs LOL!!!
@@4citiesUk I feel you - that’s the main reason I’d like to own the R5. However we knew about the crop before buying the EOS R - so we can’t quite complain. For you and especially with HDMI capture, I would ask what the purpose is that you are looking to use this for. If it’s for live streaming… I would not bother to even try 4k - it’s not necessary. @@ChrisSpiegl yes, Camlink 4k is a costly investment. The cheap cards work well and give the most bang for the buck. One should get one instead of sticking to the oem USB method for better quality.
Amazing video, thank you so much! I'm looking foward to test it on my Canon T5, wich is pretty laggy using straight USB with EOS Utility
However, the resolution (of the Canon Webcam Utility) is not even 1080p… but at least it works.
m50 mark 2 works via usb and canon firmware. great for obs and free
That was a great video Chris. Two questions if I may. Firstly did you notice any audio lag or video lag when you are using it on Skype or Zoom? Secondly, did you film this video using the Canon EOS-R? If so, what lens did you use with it? Thanks again for this video. Very useful !
So my understanding is that this solution gives better results than the Canon webcam utility software?
Yes, the HDMI capture card does give you a much better result. However, you can also choose a cheap capture card and don't have to purchase the CamLink 4k (if you don't need 4k).
Can you tell us what were the cables/connectors you used on the setup? Was that a HDMI to Mini USB that went front Elgato to the Laptop?
It's a HDMI - HDMI cable that goes from the camera to the Elgato CamLink 4k and then the CamLink is connected to the laptop via USB or a USB to USB-C Adapter.
I have the Elgato 60 S and you can use it as a webcam. You can also use a tv to monitor the video.
Chris Spiegl i tried it with Microsoft Teams and works.
did you have to purchase a micro USB to HDMI cable separately? my canon eos m50 mark II did not come with one and wonder if buying a separate one is what is needed. my mirco USB cable plugs in at a USB source currently.
Chris thank you for this in depth tutorial! I just need to know where I can purchase a “dummy battery” for my Canon Rebel t6i. Thanks!

Chris Spiegl Awesome! Yes the RF are amazing!
In terms of video capture and the white square:
What you are seeing there can have two reasons.
Thanks for the clear explanation Chris, but my EOS Utility doesn't recognize my M50, any idea what's going on? I connect it with the Elgato CamLink
The EOS Utility has nothing to do with the Elgato Camlink. You need to use either the Elgato streaming program, OBS, or just use the webcam in another program like Skype or so.
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much for a clear and organized video. You deserve more subs!
Hi Chris, if you're on a Mac, you can connect a Canon camera without any capture card, by using Ecamm Live software. And with the pro subscription you can use the feed as a virtual webcam in any other software :)

I have been using my cameras for hours and hours and left them turned on. No issues so far.
Hi, what is with better sound, mic? Can I connect mic od zoom h4n pro and output to eos r, for better audio?
I would take the Zoom H4n and connect it to the Computer via USB and then use that as my microphone. But if you don't want to do that, you can also use the Line-Out of the Zoom H4n and connect that to your camera and use that. The Elgato CamLink does provide the sound from the cameras mic to the computer. So that works either way. Good luck.
When using the video capture, do you need a memory to be inserted in the camera?? Because I have a Canon 700D and the memory card port does not work, please let me know this is an option.
We use it without a capture card all the time. However, that's with the Canon EOS R. So, it may work, or it might not.

Yes, absolutely

That is only partially true. Yes you can use the canon EOS Webcam Utility - however, that does not provide audio to your computer and it also does not provide 4k (not even 1080p). I have a comparison of the cam link vs. the Usb solution on my channel here: th-cam.com/video/HEZl2YlWMek/w-d-xo.html

My live-streamings are usually longer than 30 min.

There is a setting in the Video settings of the R type cameras which is "auto power off" and you have to set this to "never" or whatever the menu options are.

Very welcome! Thank you for your comment 🌸.

Is clear hdmi in canon eos r supports autofocus?
Yes, the Canon EOS R (and all EOS R cameras) support full auto focus - even when connecting something via Clean HDMI.
What lens are you using?
What do you think would be the best lens on Canon R to set up behind the desktop about 30" away from my face.
What was your reason for switching over from Sony?
I made a video about that th-cam.com/video/Di3esm3odVc/w-d-xo.html
However… latest release (aka a7sIII) made me kinda regret it. 😅
My main reasons were (at the time):
- missing the canon form factor
- not having a flip screen on the Sony cameras
- colors of canon
Now… I would think thrice. And I am actually considering a a7c, a7s3 and the a6400 line for different projects. Namely because they all shoot 30min+!
Will the Elgato cam link also recognize 3.5mm audio input - like a Sennheiser wireless lav or Rode shotgun mic mounted to camera?
Only if you are plugging the microphone into the camera that then is connected via HDMI. The CamLink itself does not have a Mini-Jack Input.
Sony A7iv is plug and play as a webcam

Chris Spiegl thank you so much 😊
This is great! Thanks, Chris. What about sound? Do you run a mic through your camera as well?

@@ChrisSpiegl thank you. Yes, 5D Mark IV has a setting where the overlays on the LCD can be removed. This is for everyone's information :))
@@dandna1855 That's great, but it's not the same as a clean HDMI output. The internal and the external LCD are different from each other and for the Cam Link you'd need the HDMI output. Thank you for the video. Very informative and actionable content. I've been following these steps using the cam link 4k and a canon eos r and dummy battery. Everything was going well with the setup. Which software are you using?
I'm interested to know what camera you are using now to shoot this video. I've been trying to get the kind of setup clarity you have now with the m50 to no avail. Would appreciate any comments and how this can be achieved. I want the front to be lit up like yours but the back to be a bit dark.
I am using the Canon EOS R camera. I sometimes one sometimes two lights in front of me and the back is light up with the Aputure MC lights.
Can you charge your camera while doing lives?
Most cameras need a Dummy battery to be used continuously for live streaming. I have a video about that: th-cam.com/video/eizXQglFJmQ/w-d-xo.html
Even though the camera is set in movie mode/4K at 24 fps? .

Very helpful thank you! 👍

Not sure why this would not work? This only takes the signal that is coming out of the HDMI port and converts it into a webcam.

hi how does this compare to using the "EOS Utility". I've been using that for about a week and I have to say its quite tricky. I'm using OBS to capture the "webcam signal" from my EOS R and most of the time OBS doesn't detect the camera. I need a solution more reliable so I'm considering using the cam link as an alternative but will this solution improve in terms of reliability and quality of image?
and max resolution? does this still crop 4K capturing?
Hello 4CiTieSuk, the answer to that is very simple: HDMI Capture FAAAAR outweighs the Canon EOS Utility Webcam capture… in quality, reliability, and features. I have two videos I would recommend you watch:
1) EOS Utility and it's downsides: th-cam.com/video/HEZl2YlWMek/w-d-xo.html
2) a cheaper alternative to the CamLink 4k: th-cam.com/video/zK4hhbadQQI/w-d-xo.html
Note: The Elgato CamLink 4k can capture 4k and you can stream / record a 4k signal (if you have the EOS R in 4k mode).
At this point I made enough room in my studio to be able to shoot 4k at 35mm. Still would prefer not to have the crop but it works.
For you and especially with HDMI capture, I would ask what the purpose is that you are looking to use this for. If it’s for live streaming… I would not bother to even try 4k - it’s not necessary. But if you’re trying to record long form content - well maybe.
@@ChrisSpiegl true, I remember watching videos about that limitation. Since I had owned this camera mainly for photo shooting, and recently started a TH-cam channel about stocks/trading I figure I should try to gain some extra value for the camera investing. I do screen sharing with myself in a small square, or me discussing something in the studio. So far all content is offline. I guess I’ll go with a cheap 1080p no brand video capture device...maybe will try to get a 60fps one as it’s only a few bucks extra. 🤔 thanks again for all the help! If my channel becomes successful I’ll mention yours as reference for people that want to learn more on how to get the setup right!
I have cam link 4k, Macbook pro and OBS. When I do live streaming the video in live stream lags behind the actual by around 27 seconds. What can I do to fix this?
Hello Ravi, is the lag visible in OBS or is it on whatever streaming platform you are streaming to?
And what age is your MacBook Pro?
