My wife has this car, she HATES the glare that comes off the silver part of the shifter, so I talked her into letting me matte black vinyl the console, so this video was GREAT! Thanks.
Great video. Have a 2018 and the storage compartment under the sense is two pieces held together by clips. Somehow this came apart. Was able to use this video to take it apart and fix it. Fixed the broken latch at the same time. This video was a great help!
Thank you! My 12v outlet died on my 2015 model which looks the same as this. So this video at least gets me to the center console removal part. Much appreciated!
Those yellow plugs at the end are the car’s airbag module. Gotta be extremely careful around that thing. If you unbolt it before unplugging the yellow plugs and were to accidentally turn it a certain way, it could cause the airbags to deploy
My first Outback was a '17. Loved it! It was lemon law exchange (ring / oil consumption issue). Wish I could have kept it after replacement short block.
I do have something to add since there are people on Subaru online discussion groups and TH-cam mentioning stuck ignition keys with engine off. Watched your video and was able to remove the center console but after re-assembly and replacing the shifter knob, my key was stuck in park with engine off. Come to find out the the white plastic shaft inside the shift lever must be kept or returned to the original orientation or the ignition won't recognize that the lever is in the "P" position. My advice would be to pull the shifter knob up slowly and then mark the shite plastic rod with a permanent marker on the back, or the same side where the clip would be. Without realizing it, I had rotated the rod a quarter turn which caused the stuck key problem. Once I rotated it back a quarter turn then problem solved!
Thanks for that additional tech tip. I did not encounter that issue when working on the one I did. I'm sure it will help someone. Thanks for watching. - Sponge
@@spongestechtips-xu1xg Never know if it might help some poor slob like me. All I wanted to do was replace the console "box" in my Outback since it was broken by the previous owner and now I can put stuff in there without it falling through. Thanks for the vid.
This video really helped me as I need to know exactly where to lift, wedge, etc.....I may replace the entire gear shift assembly per TSB regarding the stuck ignition key. Just a bad design....

Any chance you can do a video showing how to get the front cigarette/aux/usb ports out? I'd like to modify what's in that little cubbie but don't know how to get back in there yet
Thanks for this. My 12v in the center console blew up so I used your video to change it. But I also need to change my cigarette lighter socket. Do you have any tips on how to go about taking out that little front cubby?
Great video mate, thanks, sadly i need to replace the tiny push-to-open door lid from the compartment above, just like yours mine is broken and scratched, any word of advise? Thanks, keep it up with the good tutorials
Thanks for the video. I want to install a dash cam and I´m going to route the 12 volt connector into the center console. I´m just wondering if there is any access in the center console walls or if I have to drill one.
Thank you for such a helpful video , my 12v socket in the centre console stopped working so this was very useful to get to that part 👍
really good video. I'm digging into my 2018 outback to mount a phone cradle and this gave me what I need to open up that area.

I never removed the shifter nob to take off the front plastic cover. It's small enough to squeeze right past
Great video, just what I needed to fix it. Thank you for sharing this!
Thanks, exactly what I need to get to the Park sensor in front of the shifter
This made my life easier thanks

Great video. Where do I order the center console itself ?
That airbag module
