Great flipthrough! I think a huge part of why the book is good is that it shares really the 'philosophy' behind creating art which deals a lot with the mindset and temperament in order to approach creating with complete and full attention. (I loved the mountain climber analogy here.) I'm getting the same vibe here as when I read Loomis' Successful Illustration-and it helped me a lot with regards to 'centering' myself and leaving the cares of modern social media at the door.

What I meant about 'cares' was, I think we worry a lot today (subconsciously, I would wager) about, oh I need to do this quickly and it needs to be really good on the get go. And then we lose the focus we need in order to approach the craft with a dedication that understands that getting better and more proficient is hard work that TAKES time. There is no shortcut to it. There is no "study this, do this, and you'll get to Karla Ortiz levels by tomorrow."

There is a price difference between Alla Prima and Alla Prima ll. Is the larger Alla prima ll worth the higher price?

Wonderful wonderful book- it's such a shame it is SO expensive. It's a pity as so many could benefit from it, but it is out of the budget of many

@@sketch-habit I mean, WHY is this book so expensive? There are other art books, decent ones, at half the price and even quarter. James Gurney's book on colour and light is excellent, and a bargain. This book by all accounts is THE best painting book. But Researching online, I am looking to spend over $300 local currency to get it. The cheapest option is the official website at $95 US....but then international postage takes it to over $300 once again because they are wanting over $100 for freight. Let's put this in context- Peter Ellenshaw Under Glass is a far bigger book, I paid half that freight charge. I understand art books are not cheap, but I do not understand why this specific book is SO pricey. I would happily pay a bit more than other art books for this, which sounds a definitive guide. But three times the amount?

@@mikeroberts2742 it’s a good question. I believe it’s volume of production. James Gurney’s sell a lot more and probably have a publisher behind it. Schmid’s might be self published with a way smaller volume. The print and paper quality is also better tbh

@@sketch-habit Thats fair. I actually don't mind paying the $95 US for it....what sticks in my throat is the $105 international freight they quoted. I am well aware international freight is horrendously expensive, and that New Zealand is about as far as you can get! But we are also aware by necessity what freight charges cost. I know they aren't Amazon and do not get great deals on freight- but I have bought bigger/heavier books from independents before and the freight charge has been a more realistic $50 US. Perhaps it is first class express specifically ? I may email and ask :-)

@@mikeroberts2742 it’s worth the try, but I believe it’s volume as well. Have you tried buying used through any outlet in NZ?

You should move the microphone, so it doesn't block your face.
