"The game begins at U.S. Outpost 31 in Antarctica, a short time after the events of the film. Two teams of U.S. Special Forces have arrived to investigate the U.S. camp and the nearby Norwegian camp. Whilst investigating Outpost 31, Beta Team soon discover the small spacecraft made by the Blair-Thing and a tape recorder with a message from R.J. MacReady, describing how nobody trusts anybody anymore. They then find information detailing how the base has been infiltrated by an extraterrestrial lifeform that is capable of imitating the physical appearance and characteristics of any living organism."

No matter how old this is, the way your squadmates react to the environment and certain actions is still more believable and immersive than most other modern games nowadays that just focus on graphics and other fancy gimmicks rather than making the AI for NPCs feel more alive.
Which is rly sad considering hw far we've gotten technology wise over the yrs,yet we have so much trouble makin the AI npc feel alive,and what's even sadder? Is this immersion was achieved with basically "ancient" gaming technology,goes to show the diff bet development teams who are legit passionate about their games and those who rely on graphics and care only bout money
Agreed the ai felt nore alive in oblivion than in skyrim. And most games the ai dont feel alive
Hands down one of the best movie tie in games ever. One of the best PS2/Xbox games ever. This is what you get when you have a development team that actually cares about the property/franchise that they are making a game about. The graphics, level of detail, voice acting, AI etc etc etc are all phenomenal for the time...👍👍👍 Fuckin Awesome memories playing this game late at night with my friends!!!

@@infinitesimotel I agree my brother, however the problem with indie developers they often focus on PC gaming, and the games are obviously a lot shorter and of lesser quality. I believe Capcom could be the best aspect though bro.

Most ppl won't touch it from hw scary it is,now if it were the old capcom as in the guys who gave us RE original trilogy and outbreak games? Now THOSE guys would b perfect

The only thing I hope they change in the remaster is the fact that you shoot these weapons with one hand I hope they change it so that he shoots with two hands It just doesn't make any sense

They will eventually turns into the Things, sooner or later.
I still remember how funny your companion will freak out in this game every time they see a dead and say this “We’re going to Die here” “we’re Screwed” “Its cold as Shit out here” 😂
The NPCs in this are still more alive than most triple A games of today.

To think this game was given John Carpenter's blessin as the canon sequel to his movie is fantastic.
Definitely one of the best video games of all time. Kills me they never remastered this or made like a sequel with today's consoles, graphics, etc

I havent played this game for over 1 and a half decade, but I've played it a lot back in the days on pc. But man, those sound effects still give me PTSD. This game was something special.

2 playthroughs every upload and capture the 2nd. Cuts down wondering and backtracking plus shortens video time.
This game right here needs a full on full-blown remake to the tenth degree with all the bells and whistles and with a cheery in top.

I like this style of game. I see it with Antarctica 88, Dread X: The Hunt, and Cold Fear.
It's wild to me that someone made sure the detail of MacReady erasing "Nobody trusts anybody now" from his tape was included here.

I see the walkthrough for this game not for the first time and I have an opinion that this game is better than Dead Space and The Calisto Protocol. The Thing really deserves a remake.
Thank you for having posted this. My wife and I just (re-)watched the original movie last night, and we just love it. Prequel isn't bad, either. I've had this PS2 game in my library for well over a decade, but just have never been able to get myself to play through it. It is definitely an 'aged' game, but I've always wanted to 'see' it. So, I finally looked up a playthrough -- yours -- and can now at least know how the game story goes. :)
1:52:00 The first partner to see Black and the professor being grabbed by the military is like "Understandable, have a nice day"
Shit I just realized this game is as old as I am
The game didn't won me over as it leaves "The Thing" atmosphere behind and ends up being a shooter where you are spammed by enemies around every corner along with the plot getting too ridiculous, following a Resident evil type of narrative (bioweapons) as well as having a bit of half-life type of vibe when it comes to enemies. The premise is good, the practice and implementation not so good. A good "the Thing" game would be an Alien Isolation type of survival horror.
At one point, even Cold Fear manages to capture in many aspects what this game misses but ends up being too Resident Evil-ish.
How nervous when you read the Documents slowly even after finishing the game 4 times....but go on without reading....as they said in Resident evil 4.... imbecile

this game was so interesting in its concept. it retakes the paranoid ambience of the cult movie. it's a shame its sequel was cancelled because the studio who make the game went bankrupt. no other studios would dare to retake that "The thing 2 project" since the 2000s. one of the most unfair news in the VG history. i can show you a link.
otherwise, i am a firearms amateur, i know that the guns which appear in the games exist really, here's their name and history :
the basis pistol is a Beretta 92F (or a 92B). a 9mm Italian pistol which was created since the seventies by the society which give its name (fun fact, it's the oldest gun society yet). The pistol becomes quickly popular among worldwide polices, sportives, gangsters and army groups, for its accuracy, simplicity, reliability and elegant design even the US military will not escape to the success of the Beretta. The US Navy was the first American army branch to use Beretta pistols (which was the 92S variant). but the rest of the army still use another famous pistol, the M1911 or either the S-G P226. The Beretta seen in-game is presumably a stand-in for the M9, but the game takes place in 1982 (like the movie) and the M9 is adopted in 85. Which make it anachronistic. but why not.
the fully-automatic machinegun (they forgot to add "sub") is the HK MP5. a suppressed SD variant judging by its barrel. while the Beretta pistol is considered by some to be the Ferrari of pistols, the MP5 can be the Roll-Royce of the SMGs, thanks to its simplicity, reliability and accuracy. created since the sixties, that German SMG of 9mm Luger will be quickly favoured by polices and armies in Europe. It isn't yet exported in America in the eighties which make it anachronistic to the hands of American soldiers in-game. a more appropriate full-auto gun would have been an M16 rifle variant, an M3 Grease gun or a Mac10 SMG.
the shotgun is a Benelli M4, an Italian semi-auto shotgun which is created since... The 1990s. it's also a popular gun with counter-terrorists, polices and armies in the world including the US one who will adopt it much later. an American pump shotgun such as the Ithaca (like the one Russel Crow used in the movie) the Remington 870, or the Mossberg 500 would be better accurate, although a semi-auto Belgian Browning Auto 3 should have been a welcomed sight too.
the Sniper is an HK G3 pattern scoped rifle. it's made by the same society as the MP5 SMG, and the G3 can be considered like its greater brother despite being a bigger rifle firing bigger bullets. they were made after a group of guns made by a Spanish society named the CETME. the G3-like wooden scoped rifle is appropriate in the setting of the game, the G3 being used by many armed forces in north European countries such as Norway. it certainly fires 7.62mm NATO (even if the magazine looks too small) and it is perhaps based about sniping G3 variants like the PSG1, the MSG90 or the SR9.
the flamethrower instead being an M27A1 like in the original movie, is based about the one seen in the movie Aliens, another cult movie from the eighties. fun fact, the United Nations will create a universal law which will ban the incendiary weapons in 1983 the year AFTER the one of the movie and game. so no one should use a flamethrower since that date. it's ironic.
There is also hand grenades, which looks like M3KA4 concussion or A3M1 incendiary grenades. I have no many of Infos about these grenades. i just know they're American-made
the single-shot grenades-launcher was based about an HK69, made by the same society than the G3 and MP5
the machinegun used in the final fight on the chopper piloted by Macready aka Russel Crow was the M60D a mounted variant of the 7,62mm M60 American light machinegun

I love this game; played it for years, but can’t help but feel the developers ran out of time. (the end is mostly generic soldier enemies and the story is virtually nonexistent.)
It has some mechanics that are quite ambitious; would’ve been nice to see it used more in the final part of the game.
I’m sad the sequel was canned due to the studio shutting down. Hopefully, we’ll get a reboot one day!

the new consoles would have good power for a nice dynamic team and monster ai, sadly games these days go for graphics and not gameplay, at least the most of it... ☹ i just buyed days gone on pc, the game is awesome but only on survival difficulty! but i totally agree, a new the thing game would be aweome, love the setting.

Look for a tutorial on emulating games using PCSX2. Its very easy.
I played this back in the days when I played this game.
Intro with walls of text almost made me fall asleep. Praise small texts that don't block game flow.
Yeah theres alittle bit of text right at the start, but then its just smooth gameplay throughout.
