    My father had a fleet of shrimp boats off the coast of Africa during the 70's and 80's. However, he insisted on having Norwegian captains for his boats and spent almost a month there recruiting and/or visiting his long employed captains and their families. He said he could understand (based on the dark weather) why the Norwegians drank so much. That is a value neutral statement. They are such good people. They were always extremely lovely when they'd visit the USA. Greetings to all from Pittsburgh, PA. USA ~Laura

      Lellobeetle Well, Norway's captains is in world class :) We have been sailing rough seas since before 800 A.D. Stadtlandet or just Stadt, is one of the worlds most dangerous waters to cross... On the bad days, you don't even want to go near the ocean.... What I mean is that Norwegian seafarers knows what they're doing. Norway also have the biggest fleet of offshore boats in the world, all thanks to the many shipyards and oil :) And the Norwegians, the ones which rightfully discovered America first LOVES the US

      ***** I live in Pittsburgh now, my friend. I am a native of Houston, Texas and that is where we lived when my father had his company in Nigeria - he often spent many months straight over there working. Hard work dealing with an environment of corruption like Nigeria, you can imagine. Peace to you all.

    Started my seagoing career on a 60 foot wooden long liner with a 50 hp single cylinder Wickman engine at the tender age of 15. Working on the slaughtering the fish while looking up at the waves was rough. Weather can be bad up north in the winter.

    I've been on seas like that many times. No big deal..... Oh, did I mention I was on Aircraft Carriers? Sorry. Wouldn't want to do it on these tiny boats. Amazing seamanship. But I will add that we once took waves across the forward flight deck in the Sea of Japan. I worked on the bridge, and it was an intersting few days, even on a carrier.

    Some pretty tough running, never a fun thing but many and most sailors have been through this sort of thing. The tough one is the vessel with the barge in tow, I have never had to do that and doubt if I would want to, especially in those conditions, excellent seamanship for certain.

      I love rough weather too but I never get to go anywhere, I'd love to be on that boat, that big swell looks glorious! It's always been far too flat calm on the few occasions I've been to sea. Though I have seen a really stunning bright red sunset out at sea in calm weather which was awesome.

    What the hell is a small boat like that doing out in weather like that?
    I have fished on bigger vessels and we would never go out in weather like that.

    • @fatfuckhatesyou
      @fatfuckhatesyou 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Emulen2 The weather around these coasts can change from sunny to this without warning in a few minutes. The time it takes it to get home is enough for the weather to change five times.

    • @Emulen2
      @Emulen2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i have fished up the norwegian waters for quite a few years, and there are still weather forcast´s you can look at to get an idea of what weather you will encounter.

    • @fatfuckhatesyou
      @fatfuckhatesyou 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Emulen2 I worked 11 years out there on my fathers ice breaker. We usually checked 5-6 different forcasts before heading out but still some days you went below deck in sunshine and came back up into thunder and pitch black skies in a matter of minutes.
      At least when you are up north.
      We went out in December once to make a path for a research ship and it was -19 C and calm waters, then the black skies ( not in any forcast) came rolling in and in about 20 minutes we had to call in the SOS when the temperature had dropped to -35 C and we were taking in water from the high winds.
      Then about 50 minutes later it just passed and it was calm again.
      Three hours later we were busting ice further up north in the sun.

    remember one time we were in these cind of conditions, it was bloody terefying, but we had a boat then that was abselutely imposible to tip over. (and yes it's actually inposible for it to tip.) so I felt safe. luckely. but till scary as hell.

    "For those in peril on the sea! = so go the words of a famous hymn. And one can understand their origins
    when viewing these scenes. The North Sea is surely a fierce "training" ground for seamanship in extremis
    and the Norse people have their experience to fall back on.

    I do not found some extremely dangerous here. Sea is always dangerous even without waves and wind. Here is large waves and strong weather (about 8 bft?), but it's not extremely - waves and wind is a normal for any sea and ocean, it is a usual life of many seamen.

    • @happyfox711
      @happyfox711 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't have a clue, you DIE without an engine in these waters. Many fisherboats go down exactly for this reason. On the other hand, if the boat was working ok, they would keep on fishing.
