Did a few concerts with Manchester CWS with Derek conducting. What a lovely man, and such a brilliant cornet player, as was the other guy in the photo at 0.57 Jim Shepherd. Jim was my inspiration as an aspiring cornet player, but both of these cornet legends were the most humble, honest down to earth blokes you could ever wish to meet. I felt I was in the company of gods, my hero's when I was lucky enough to be on the same stage as them, although they didn't see it in the same way I did.
When I was playing in a brass band, the conductor chased everybody constantly with that ever"more, more !!!" The result: a big volume is obtained but at the expense of musicality. This player restrained himself, I seem to hear, to never play louder, in any situation than the instrument could give with the most beauty. (exception the last note ??) Volume is problematic for the small brass band instruments. It sounds very fast shrill and out of tune which affects the beautiful tone of the whole band. One doesn't desire the compact sound of the hobo to spread out like that of a trombone. The same should be true for the high voices in a BB.
What can you say but brilliant playing and at 65 years young, well done sir.👏
