Stop using social media to dictate what feels right for you. I've been a minimalist for 30 years and it's not what you see on social media. I like a clean, neat space, I have some color on my walls and crystal chandeliers. My wardrobe is denim, pink, purple, white and black. I do not own the starter box of salt lamps, essential oils and all white. Minimalism keeps getting rebranded. At first, it was the 100 thing challenge, then tiny houses came into the mix, then we moved to living out of a suitcase, digital nomad, then came the "expensive" minimalist and now I've noticed it is about comfortable minimalism. As far as judgement, blah to that. Do you!

I always wondered why minimalism took on a particular aesthetic. I understand that these are versatile colors, but it makes everyone and every hole look the same. I really enjoy some color and vintage items with a story; it makes for more interest even though I do like neutrals and mix in vibrate color. I’ve definitely succumbed to getting rid of too much! I took the opposite approach, instead of asking, “what can I get rid of?” I started asking, “what do I need?” I would look at what I needed and everything else around that I got rid of. It really, greatly reduced regretful decluttering!

I think it's because colour can be cluttering. If everything looks the same it looks empty and not cluttered.

It's so much easier focusing on the things you enjoy having and using vs. what you're getting rid of. :) It's a big game changer when you realize this.

We all fall in that aesthetic vibe. But as we knew more about minimalism, we realize that it doesn’t have to be that way. Minimalism is a journey and we will forever learn more about it.

Minimalism is good for mental health. I have always felt drained and our when I come home. As soon as I started changing my home to white and soft neutral colors, I'm starting to feel more light and calm.

i really like the Marie Kondo approach to minimalism. keep only what sparks joy. but that requires being really honest with yourself and asking yourself if it truly sparks joy and why.

I feel that approach can be challenging at times. I watch Minimal Mom, she has what to me seems as easier approach "do I want to manage this inventory? Would I buy it again if I did not own this" is some of the questions she asks. I find it much easier than "does this spark joy" question)

I’m not a Minimalist, but I am an extremely neat and organized person. I have a place for everything in my house and I know where all of belongings in my house r suppose to go. Even my 2 year old knows where everything goes. It makes my life easier, bc when the house gets messy, everyone knows exactly where that belonging’s spot is. Also, I have 5 children. 22, 20, 17, 14 & 2. When my oldest 4 children were little, everyone has their own toy box. ALL of their toys had to b able to fit into their toy box, if it didn’t, they had to decide what to keep and what to donate. Especially, close to the holidays, me and my children would go through their things and they would pick out toys or clothes that they didn’t like anymore or play with and give them to someone in need. Fast forward from having my first child at 21 and then having my 5th & last child at 41. She knows exactly where her toys go. Of course, I’m older, remarried, smarter & wiser but the concept is the same. I have money to buy her things at my age, 44, that I couldn’t do in my 20’s w/my other 4. She knows where her books go, bc I bought her a little bookshelf that the books just slide down in there and it’s a little shorter than her. She can put her toys away bc they go in the ottoman that doubles as a toy box for downstairs and she has a toy box for upstairs. U can b a Minimalist or very organized, even when u become a mother bc u r in control of what cones in the house and what doesn’t. I’ve learned that kids don’t need 15 outfits, 30 pairs of socks and 10 pairs of pj’s. I have a washing machine and they can only wear one outfit at a time. I also use the rule that when I bring something new into the house, I try to see if I can let something else in my house go. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. My middle daughter has always had trouble keeping her room clean and organized. I told her that u HAVE to own your things, or your things will own u. I told her, it’s your stuff. Don’t let it stress u out. If it’s stressing u out and you’re not using it, it doesn’t fit, u don’t sleep with your stuffed animals anymore, then just let it go. Like u were saying, u have to do what works for u and your lifestyle. I don’t stress my house and my things, bc if I don’t know where they go, how the hell r your kids suppose to know where they go? U can’t blame them. I’m sure u will keep an inventory of your children’s possessions and when they outgrow their toys, clothes etc…u will pass it on to someone else. Great video!!

OMG! I’ve been waiting for someone to bring the topic up of over decluttering and asking yourself if you will need it even as far away as a year because part of a minimalist lifestyle is not overspending and why should you repurchase anything? I think they should be especially true for the lucky ones you have a house big enough with attic storage or basement storage or garage storage where they can pack it away and it does not have to be a part of their day-to-day life until necessary. So, thank you again because it’s been driving me crazy that no one talks about this and I can’t imagine how I’m the only one who feels this way.

This relates to me so much to people being drawn to homes that look like right out of a furniture store. A home is supposed to be cozy n make u feel safe. Life is colourful and whatever u combine, it might even be awful- as long as there is NO corner with random stuff, i ask myself if theres anyone living there. Feel cozy and warm at home, its YOUR HOME! Wherelse r u gonna apply ur rules of living so u can feel completely comfortable? Its ur place, ur cave, ur nest- if u stress about it, theres no place in the world where ur free. Greets

Wow. I think this is your best video! Girl, I have been wanting to say pretty much everything you said in this video about minimalism FOR YEARS! I’m not a minimalist but I do not have anything against it personally. I actually respect it in theory. The point of minimalism, from my understanding, is to essentially not have too many things you don’t need, which I agree with in theory, but my problem has always been that a lot of minimalist I see take it way too far, like your closet has to be practically empty because you only need to have what you need. I don’t think being “minimal” should be all about exactly how many items you own and there is more to life than just how many things you have. Your home doesn’t have to look like a department store by having a whole lot of stuff, but your home doesn’t have to look practically bare with ONLY a few items to get you by everyday. Personally it sounds more stressful to have to work with very very little than to work with an average amount of stuff that gives you some options as well. So in short, I agree with everything you said and it’s about time somebody said this. 😊😘

I appreciate what your saying, reality vs Instagram reality. Neutrals make things larger and match well, it’s an aesthetic thing for cameras. Know, I can see wanting an aesthetic that pleases you, because if I only have 4 things… I really want to love them.

I wouldn’t exactly call myself a minimalist but I’m getting there … my apartment is basically just random pieces of furniture, a combination of mine and my boyfriends different tastes from when we used to live separately. It used to bother me that nothing matches but you’re so right Kyra! Why would I go by a new table when I have one already that serves its purpose? It’s a waste of money plus it creates even more waste in the world!

For me, trying to live a more wholesome and mininimal lifestyle has nothing to do with color or an empty space.
It has to do with pairing down the clutter, being organized, respecting the space i have in my home, not buying everything i see, learning to say no, just window shopping instead of going in the store, saving instead of spending and growing my nest egg and not overcrowding the rooms I have in my home. Its a lifestyle that ecompasses so many areas. Its not about color, or empty rooms.
I think it means something different to everyone .
I've been decluttering and buying less. Keeping things that have true meaning and add value to my life. And Kyra, dont beat your self up about your channel . you cant compare yourself to those people making big bucks on youtube
Those channels are the die hard vloggers that post everyday, non stop, and super duper savvy famous personalities with a million subs.
You'll get there love. Slow and steady wins the race, and quality over quantity wins in the long run and has longevity.

Thank you so much, I was just looking at my space like even though I have less stuff it doesn’t have a theme and I start looking online for matching items, like part of trying to be minimalist is to spend less and I feel better about just accepting how it looks. Also, I learned it helps to have like minded people, my best friend and I both try to practice being minimalist and it’s really nice to have someone who can relate.

  • @emargo19

    my idea of minimalism:
working with what you already have.
not buying into only one single color as minimalism
When tired of a certain item that is still wearable i will store it away and usually i find myself enthusiastic about wearing these after a few months.
Being very delibrate about all my purchases, I feel very guilty discarding after only a few wears.
Yes one needs to find their own minimalism journey. Don't get carried away by you tube videos as most are exploiting the idea of minimalism for ratings.

I love that way, I buy what I need everyday. But not the same for my kids. I love zero waste too, I use a diva cup, menstrual painties, & pads. My Electric tooth brush is like 10 years old just get a different head every 3 months. & use the old one to clean the bottom of the windows. I own 2 blankets, but my anxiety buys my kids back ups. But I go with what I need everyday. Don’t need like 40 shirts I got 5 shirts

Yes as partners we blend styles and have items we care about that create a blend thats less showroom and more a narrative of a couple. A lot of our pieces are family antiques that dont match but blend. My grandmother taught me if your room feels unanchored put in a touch of something dark or black. Your plant leaves do that in your bedroom. Do you. Thank you for sharing that some of the minimalist crowd is judgy and preachy. Duh thats why your channel is your name not the perfect minimalist! 👍 good points. When I ask myself “will I need this?” If the answer is “no” I ask “would I mind buying it again?” If I don’t want to re- buy it I quarantine it and revisit it later. Ok, so in my 30's I did not fall into any of those traps. In my twenties when I was more concerned about what others thought and wanted a new wardrobe every month and lived 10 min from a major mall. . . .I had a problem. Now minimalism for me in my 30's is really about keeping it simple. Only buying things that I love and I am fully aware all the videos are staged to look perfect like they live like monks. I just know I ended up with too much stuff. Have a box for go. Have a box for keep. Have a box for maybe, because I like it a lot and am unsure and place the box under the stairs and if I don't go searching for or think about said items for a longgg time it just turns into a go box. I'm not about matchy matchy but about my closet not being overwhelming and only having items I want to wear. That my house has things that represent me and make me happy. Should you get rid of everything? NO!!! I need three hammers because they are all different weights and you need the right tool for the right job! Same in the kitchen. Knowledge of what you NEED, then what you WANT (cute candles and decorative), and what can go is the real power. KNOWLEDGE.

  • @TheMcChelle
    @TheMcChelle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Great message! I got rid of stuff I needed too. But collecting the designer bags and filling your house with crap from Home Goods (i.e., China) - now THAT is boring. Minimalism isn’t. It’s calming. You do you! Keep it up!

  • @Danicalip8
    @Danicalip8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I don’t get when people judge how other people live. Like how is it bothering you? I’ve never been affected by how other people live other than my parents or something growing up. That’s it! And they love how better I feel after I’ve decluttered my life! I have more confidence!
I honestly think that people’s idea of “success” is very artificial and it’s been sold to people by society and advertisements. Katherout has a great video about “the myth of success” and how ads portray how people are supposed to be successful in life…instead of that person figuring it out for themselves. So now I think of judgement in that way. I feel successful with my home and my belongings and my job and everything around me. And that’s all that matters! ❤️

Thank you for your video. Seriously. The minimalist/essentialist discussion is necessary. As a designer, I have seen how toxic the hegemony of this aesthetic and philosophy is, considering not only how imperative it is in our lives, but also how UNINCLUSIVE and UNDIVERSE it can be, considering the minimum income in other countries (also brave of you to disclose your income, and how this is necessary because this discussion isn't just about looks or philosophies, but also about FINANCES AND MONEY TOO) and overall consumerism. Thank you Kyra Ann!

I think people miss the point of minimalism. I recently bought a few new fidgets. Some I like, 3 I hate. I will be passing them on. They don’t add value to my life, they don’t function how I need. The others do, they work for me, they help me.
My kitchenware, as silly as it sounds, makes me happy. I have a number of pieces in a blue and white floral theme and love it. The pattern just makes me smile. My kitchen plates and bowls make me happy. They are so worth owning. Other stuff doesn’t have the same effect. That’s the stuff I need to let go of, and that’s my challenge.

After I thought about it, there is nothing wrong with our couch. Truth be told it is very rare that we even sit on it. Really good points. I have got rid of some stuff I needed later. We have to remember that minimalism is supposed to help us simplify our lives but we all have different homes and families so have to be careful not to obsess over a certain look as that's what we're trying to move away from in minimalism. It is a journey. The main impact for me is knowing where everything is in my house and is has impacted positively in other areas too so I'm much more intentional with my time etc

Thanks for your honesty and sharing mistakes you've made thru your minimalist journey.
I'm getting rid of "stuff" so when I croak my son isn't overwhelmed. I check in with him periodically about "stuff" he might want now, or later, before giving it away and I try to keep him appraised of items he might get money for if he doesn't want them. Basically took the idea from a book about Swedish Death decluttering. My place is feeling lighter, the fun things I've collected or been given can now be seen to be 😉 enjoyed. Win-win for all.

I totally agree with all the points you made in this video! Also, decluttering is discussed so often in the realm of minimalism that it sometimes gives me anxiety and even though I do not have much stuff I keep looking for things to get rid of almost daily and have to fight with myself and keep on remembering that right now there is nothing I can safely dispose. So in total, minimalism changed my life for so much better but it also has its traps.

I done that got rid of my wardrobe only kept the few things that match the new vibe (gothic casual ish vibe) and I DONT REGRET IT Best thing I done and you dont need to spend a bomb to to it I've spent maybe £100 or so on my wardrobe... that's it
Edit - I used to be 100% goth in my teens and got ao much shit I went and got "normal basic clothes" and I just woke up one day and said fuck it I like it screw anyone that has something bad to say 👍

Kyra, I love this video! Thank you! I am trying to become more minimal in terms of spending less, using what I have, and getting rid of what I am not using. Your video is perfect for what I am trying to accomplish. I don't want to spend money on completely remaking my house and wardrobe, but having less and using what I have.

Thank you for the last one, sometimes I feel alone about wanting things to feel spacious and simple. Everyone seems to feel like their opinion is the only one that matters in a home where they do not even live in. So tired of it, my sister always goes in and say BUT it has to be something in that corner and so on and saying that I should buy new things. I just want to be without them always coming in with their input all the time, it is exhausting. They always complain that my house is not furnished enough and that I haft to do something about it.

Great video 😊 For me minimalism is a necessity. I have some pretty severe visual and auditory sensory issues. So between that and being a stay at home wife and homeschooling mom. I just had to give in and make things work for me again. I personally am happy that I went back to my minimalist mindset from my pre-child days. However it does not work for everyone and that’s ok. Minimalism looks different for everyone 🤷🏻‍♀️ and that’s ok too.

You will still be a minimalist with children. You definitely have more things but you just make sure you actually use them. We buy preloved, look after the items and pass on when the time comes. My boys have beautiful capsule wardrobes, they have nice toys that I rotate to keep them interested and they have a lot of space to play.

I do love my neutrals especially brown!! I love a pop of color though too. I agree its more hurtful in real life when people judge the lifestyle but at the end of the day those are probably people I've decluttered from my life ;)

When i bought a new handbag I gave my old handbag to a friend. That night i dreamt of my old handbag and when i woke up, I realized that i made a mistake. I simply called my friend and asked for it back. I was afraid that she would be salty about it, but she was so understanding and the whole situation turned out to be a life lesson for me and a bonding moment for me and my friend. I want to own less but sometimes I need to calm down with the decluttering. When you give things away to friends I think its fair game to ask for it back, it would be another thing if you sold the item. Good friends understand.

Thanks, Kyra Ann. I love lots of color. I'm somewhere between maximalist and minimalist. I have an afroboho vibe going on in my apartment.
Folks really should stop judging you. You have your own style and I think your home is beautiful and welcoming! Haters are really jealous, and I'm sure they secretly admire you!

Being overly eager during a declutter and losing a very personal item in the process that you just can't replace, might be the worst thing with minimalism. I heard people speak about it before and their regret was tangible, so I try to be really slow and careful about it because that would break my heart. And I feel like it can be easy to get obsessive about, almost addicted to it. I mean, if you're totally down for extreme minimalism, alright. But better think good and hard about it. I don't think I could do it, but luckily it isn't a requirement.
And I feel the judgement most when people are around me when I declutter something, especially if it's gifts or items that I know they have a personal attachment, too, so they question your decision and try to guilt-trip you in keeping. And then there's of course your own guilt you feel when you start out.

I am not a minimalist. It’s just not in me. I recently lost a bunch of weight so went to the attic and brought down 5 boxes of coats, leather jackets, pants, sweaters jeans and suits(which I don’t really need now). It has been so long that they are all back in style now and saved me a fortune by not buying a whole new wardrobe.

I actually remember when you said you were going to get rid of that table and I thought noooooo it’s gorgeous!! But yes decluttering high is a real thing. I normally just put away stuff I’m not sure about, and even then I regret it when I can’t find them immediately ;P

  • @SandraStefanova
    @SandraStefanova 3 ปีที่แล้ว

So funny, first you can’t make yourself throw stuff away or donate etc, then - you get a decluttering “high” (love the expression). I would open my closet sometimes and be like “hmmmmm what can I get rid off”. Even if it’s just one - I wanna throw something away. Almost like when I wanted to leave the mall with a bag back in the days, when I was not part of the “minimalistic cult” lol. I think we all got too bold with throwing stuff away at some point, but it’s just another lesson learned. I’m still holding on to some gym clothes that I haven’t used in years, because I train at home now, but hey, I’m not buying new ones, those are expensive! And this is a conscious choice of me trying to be frugal for my future self, otherwise I’m ready for that high right away, they have survived way too many declutterings
