Once had both the ring and middle finger thumbnail on my left hand(lucky it wasn't the right) come completely off in a crowbar incident. Took 3 months to grow back, but now you can't even tell they were injured. Just kept them clean, loosely bandaged to prevent new injuries to the nail bed and lubed with ointment to keep the beds from drying out. Never even went to the doctor.
u dont do bad yourself. really a small mill is needed. i know a guy that makes dovetail cutters which would be great for my JET lathe if it worked. to do list
I don't have a granite anything, so I'm taking notes. As I learn & progress...I can give back to a Community that knows me...they know my past...prison & all. I need to learn more, because they need the service. Plus, I really want to be a "Toolmaker." A lot of people need punches...both soft and hardened & soft hammers, as much PTO Couplings... My own handtools...skies the limit. Mahalo Nunui, for sharing your Mana`o Knowledge with us, Aloha, Chief
Everyone is a critic I guess, but you have the knowledge & wisdom I seek to be a true machinist. The Altas mounts are opposite of the South Bend...which you mentioned before. I have some heavy steel angle (Schedule 80) to work with. & I might be able to get some 5/8" flat bar to make gussets if I have to. But I'm hoping to make an adapter so that I cvan use othe milling attachments. Mahalo once again for sharing your kknowlege of machinig with all of us. Aloha, Chief
You, sir, are quite the professor. Your rants are polite, and educational. I never thought through what would happen if you pounded on the surface. I guess those hammer mechanics that take you to task STILL don't trust your knowledge and experience. I wonder if they still believe they were found under a cabbage leaf??
I've only now subscribed to your channel...though I've always enjoyed your educational presentations, sir. LOVE your videos, boss! Keep the shop class videos coming! Thanks a million.
Love all your vids as always and they are much appreciated thank you. Just was wondering if you could mount the palmgren? On the inside of the angle plate for more rigidity
Looking great my friend! I’ve got a cheapo granite plate for bench work and who cares if you chip it , it’s your plate and there cheap. I’ve got a nice old iron one for good work
Surely, the way you have the angle plate mounted on the crosslide there is contradictory to your first comment regarding "hangover", I understood that you would be mounting the attachment on the inside of the angle plate to reduce the hangover?
Hi MrPete, you can easily make your own transfer screws from set screws and an old hex key. I made a video showing how. This project is shaping up nicely. I always enjoy your rants!
"The Rifleman" was a great show. Incidentally, it was also Leonid Brezhnev's favorite TV show. President Nixon knew this and once invited Chuck Connors to the White House during a state visit by Brezhnev. When Brezhnev spotted Chuck, he immediately leaped at Chuck and gave him a huge 'bear hug'. You might recall this.
Amazing, a once month ago i make a little vise press for my little drill press, i made it with railroad steel (maybe AISI 1070) withouth hardening, because i afraid borke it, its funny make tools, i really want to show you Mr. Lyle, because you inspired me .
The Rifleman starring Chuck Conners. I recently read a story about Mr. Conners about a interview that took place at his ranch many years ago. Mr. Conners had been talking about his life and making movies, the TV shows, firearms and horses. My Conners asked the fellow who was doing the interview if he wanted to see Mr.Conners new horse. Mr.Conners steps outside and comes back in the house with the horse.
Thanks, Lyle. Good project. BTW, "Is Everybody Happy?" Mr. Ted Lewis was born & raised in my home town, Circleville, Ohio, about 20 miles south of Columbus. I remember him well in my younger years, (I'm 87'". Thanks again. .............Dick
Hello Mr. Pete. Nothing to do with the Atlas but I am looking for the Sector Arms for a K&T Spiral Dividing Head. The unit has a 1.5" bore. I believe the unit is from 1920. It came with a K&T 3B Universal Milling Machine. I figured you might have one or two lying around, lol. If you happen to run across one at an auction, I'm in the market for one. If you have the specs for one or would make one via one of your awesome videos I would be in your debt. If I was able I would post pics of the head and mill. Thanks for all the videos, they are extremely helpful. Bryan
Did I miss something, or was a reason you attached the slide to the wrong side of your vertical attachment at the end, i.e. with the slide overhanging the side of the "L" piece ...
Coincidentally, I'm try to make a milling attachment for my 9" southbend except it's going to be like a separate milling machine mounted like your vice so I can mill key ways and make security fasteners. Thanks for the motivation! :)
Yep…And feel free to use the height gage to pry open paint cans, and the micrometer as a glue clamp. No adverse effects will ever come from misusing tools.
I've been told that the surface plate _can_ be deformed by hitting it, thereby messing up the flatness, but it's only important when you're working at very small tolerances, way beyond the scope of a cheap 2" thick plate
Hi Mr Pete, Enjoying this build, was wondering if you have looked across the pond at the Myford lathe milling slide attachment? They are neat little units and are available as reproductions now, easily modified and adapted to many applications. Cheers
mrpete222 a quick google search or have a look on lathes.co.uk will sort that out, also if you have time have a look at Steve Jordan’s channel he has done a lot of work with these on a Myford as well as the Chinese mini lathe. Kind regards
For those of us in Canada - head over to Busy Bee Tools for the same plate(s) (at a much higher price - of course!). Grizzly & BBT are actually owned by brothers, one of whom decided to head south many years ago.
Wasn't the original plan to have the compound on the inside of the angle plate to reduce overhang? Toward the end of your video you show it on the outside of the angle during your fit up. Oops, someone below made a similar comment.
Actually I just got that identical surface plate, along with several other parts; shipping ended up to be just about $10 for the whole order standard ground shipping, so even shipped the plates are a bargain.
I was off a little...the total was $12.99 for shipping, but that included a mt2 arbor and some drill bits. But I'd priced similar surface plates on Ebay and from other suppliers and the shipping costs were staggering. one and a half times the item cost seemed to be the standard. I guess Grizzly gets a significant volume discount...heck they sent me a catalog for free and that weighs nearly as much as the granite does :-)
It’s not the dents in the granite that are the problem, it’s that the hammering bends the granite. The plate curls up like an old can run over in the road. (Rolling eyes while typing....)
May you live to be 110 and work in your shop as much as you care to . We really appreciate our shop teacher thank you
👌👌😀
Amen to that. Definitely appreciate our Shop Teacher!!!
Is it wrong that not only am I enjoying all of the videos but also the progression of the thumb nail ‘injury’. Fascinating!!
It is not wrong. It is now fully grown out
Managed to blacken both my thumb nails recently. It's not a good look. You look like you didn't learn the first time.
Once had both the ring and middle finger thumbnail on my left hand(lucky it wasn't the right) come completely off in a crowbar incident. FreezerBurn, I WAS GOING WONDER THAT! That grew out FAST, which I am taking as a sign that Mr. Pete is as healthy as ever :)
Very happy! Love all your videos. At 70 I don't think you're that old either! Thanks for this project.
Thank you
We are all Happy Mr. Pete Thank you for all the good and handy shop tricks . Sure comes handy in the cold garage shop.
Great rant, love it. Project is coming along great.

Looking great Mr. Pete! And looking forward to part 3!
And bang away on that surface plate!
lol
I watch "The Rifleman" Saturday mornings while having breakfast. Nice to see something descent on TV although we have to go back in time to do it.
😀😀😀
Way to many complainers in life.. You go Mr. Pete.. Don't listen to them.
😀
I got a real laugh out of your closing statement,, you and I will be the only ones that remember “The Rifleman” TV show, regards Frank.

Nice work as always & very easy to understand what you are doing.
👌
Well I'll gladly take your banged up surface plate. The attachment looks great so far.
🤙🤙
Mr. Pete stopped to watch the "Rifleman" tv show --Same here. It's one of my favorite shows. 👍🏻👍🏻
I will watch two episodes later today

You can now pick up at Shars in St Charles. Thanks for the video Mr Pete.
I think I will do that sometime. It would give me a chance to meet Richard hawkes
I've only now subscribed to your channel...though I've always enjoyed your educational presentations, sir. LOVE your videos, boss! Keep the shop class videos coming! Thanks a million.

Nice work as usual .love the rifleman when tv was worth watching !!!
Thanks 👍

I do not recall that but I find it incredibly interesting. Thank you for that.
TH-cam has a copy of the film showing this.
Thank you for another interesting video.
I am eagerly awaiting the finished product.
🤙
Amazing, a once month ago i make a little vise press for my little drill press, i made it with railroad steel (maybe AISI 1070) withouth hardening, because i afraid borke it, its funny make tools, i really want to show you Mr. Lyle, because you inspired me .
Thank you for watching and good luck with the projects
Thank you for continuing, like you said Grizzly has the granite surface plates at a very reasonable cost so it doesn’t matter.
🤙🤙

I'll watch for one, but I never ran into one in my whole life. So don't hold your breath
Would you happen to have a diagram to build one?
Thanks for sharing sir...
🤙
Did I miss something, or was a reason you attached the slide to the wrong side of your vertical attachment at the end, i.e. with the slide overhanging the side of the "L" piece ...
Just fitting it up
Of course you were and you weren't really going to drill 2 more holes to move it down further.
the web on the other side would prevent the travel of the slide , no ?? I was just going to suggest removing the web till he did the mockup at the end
Coming along nicely. Thank you.
🤙
Coincidentally, I'm try to make a milling attachment for my 9" southbend except it's going to be like a separate milling machine mounted like your vice so I can mill key ways and make security fasteners. Thanks for the motivation! :)

I'll be there in the morning......... just after my coffee so I can keep up with you.
I am drinking a cup right now
i belong to a online "home" machine shop group, some people are just brutal over silly stuff. looking forward to the hard part as you say
👌
Also, I noticed that you were showing us a surface plate in a luthier's supply catalogue. Do you build guitars like I do?
Yes. Everybody happy 😊
😀😀😀😀
Main grumble on my milling attachment is rotational forces on the base. Put 4 screws in that rascal!
Yes
I am certainly confused as to what the final product will look like. As Arnold said I will be back.
👌
Sitting here watching this with Chuck Connors talking in the background. My grandpa got me addicted to that show when I was knee high.
I will watch two episodes this afternoon, I love it
I thought you were going to mount the cross slide/vice on the other side of the angle plate to reduce flex.
........and it is YOUR surface plate....bang on it all you want. You ain't building the Mars rover.
lol
You stole my thoughts!
Yep…And feel free to use the height gage to pry open paint cans, and the micrometer as a glue clamp. No adverse effects will ever come from misusing tools.
Now that's funny !
Red Green says, in a pinch, any tool can be a hammer...
I have made them transfer screws before i didnt know anyone made them
🤙🤙🤙🤙
Thank You
🤙
THANK YOU...for sharing.
👌
You've been to Springfield, you need to come to Long Lane and help me with my 16inch by 4ft American Tool Works lathe. LOL
👌
What material did you use on this pin to catch? Sou do brasil.
?
Your short picture ,looks as your right it's as least 1nch ?
😀
cant wait.
🤙
more great teaching thank you
🤙
Put a button zerk in the front one to oil !
Enjoyed , Great work !

Hi Mr Pete,
Enjoying this build, was wondering if you have looked across the pond at the Myford lathe milling slide attachment? They are neat little units and are available as reproductions now, easily modified and adapted to many applications.
Cheers
I would like to see one of those
mrpete222 a quick google search or have a look on lathes.co.uk will sort that out, also if you have time have a look at Steve Jordan’s channel he has done a lot of work with these on a Myford as well as the Chinese mini lathe.

Never heard of busy bee
mrpete222 - unless you’re up here, you probably never would have seen them.
Busy Bee is just Grizzly with higher prices and no border hassles.
Thank you sir.

Actually I just got that identical surface plate, along with several other parts; shipping ended up to be just about $10 for the whole order standard ground shipping, so even shipped the plates are a bargain.
Wow, I didn't know they could ship something that heavy for that trip.
I was off a little...the total was $12.99 for shipping, but that included a mt2 arbor and some drill bits. your videos are very good and you have no subtitles in Portuguese.
None
after 2:05 I thought for sure you were going to say, I have determined that......I am blind :)
dont give a toads ass what the purists think Mr Cain LOL
It’s not the dents in the granite that are the problem, it’s that the hammering bends the granite. The plate curls up like an old can run over in the road. (Rolling eyes while typing....)
lol
I bet you didn't put one in the middle. ;-)
10 points. I just bought a 9X12....$22
.....think Ill smash it... but no video least I get vexed by the web police.
🤙🤙
Grizzly tools should give you a new granite surface plate for free, I'm sure you just sold a bunch for them.
🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
thanks Professor Peterson, you can always use that poor surface plate to beat your proverbial dead horse!!
lol
Lyle, you bolted the compound slide on the wrong side. You said originally as you have it now, there would be loss of rigidity due to the overhang.
Just fitting it up
One of my favorite homages to "The Rifleman", listen for the gong after each kill:
th-cam.com/video/nrOPVo5GFY4/w-d-xo.html
Thank you, I will watch it
Lyle, Adam Booth has the perfect retort to criticism: step away and get over it.
👌😀
Tell these people that it is none of there business if you beat on "your" surface plate.
🤙
