    1.12 Can you imagine! In the mid 17th century (Charles II and Samuel Pepys) this was the river Fleet with a wooden footbridge. The City with St. Paul’s was destroyed in the great fire of 1666 and everything in front of you was left smouldering black ash.

      That’s an incredible bit of history! It’s hard to imagine that this bustling area was once the River Fleet with a wooden footbridge. The transformation of London since the Great Fire of 1666 is fascinating-going from smouldering ruins to the vibrant city we see today.       Pre Fire the City was vibrant as Pepys describes in his wonderful Diary. It was written in shorthand and lay unread on the shelves of his bequeathed library for 150 years.
