    Everytime I heard a clarinetist breeze through the Mendelssohn Scherzo, I just really considered maybe I should just quit playing.

      it's becoming a phobia of mine...I get PTSD just listening to it....

      That is very relatable lol. Something I've noticed is that I have way over built up excerpts (especially the major ones) in my head. It's very much a mountain out of a molehill issue. I play stuff that is harder than this pretty regularly without so much concern, but for whatever reason (probably audition pressure, and so much teacher input) the excerpts seem so much more intimidating.
      Try as best as you can to keep viewing these pieces in a similar way to any other piece you might work on. Just because they are on auditions doesn't put them on a pedestal or make them harder than any other piece of music.
