Damn, I remember seeing the result and being all “wait, ITALY won?” and I was sad we’d never be able to see a Hungary - Korea Olympic Gold final at the zeitgeist of their rivalry. Was busy in a class that day and didn’t get to catch that match in particular. God damn, that was insanely close. Was nervous up till the finals. Szilagyi just about choked from being emotional, RIP. Looked pretty well in control too, until the blade cut his light out right at the end. Ouch. What a good match.
It's actually hilarious how [someone hitting but no light coming on] is an unspoken accepted part of fencing (especially on wireless). I don't think Szilagyi choked. He's really favoured to win this match up even at 39-40 against Luca, but honestly if the blame was on anyone, it should be on Szatmari for going like -8. Also, rivalry? Bruh I mean sure Hungary has had the honour of being smacked around by Korea at the the finals of the most team competitions this season (and even managing to win one). But honestly Korea has been so dominant this cycle that I don't think anyone qualifies as a rival. The most anyone could hope for was whether after Day 1 Oh was injured or Kim was too tired. But hypothetically, if Korea has a rivalry with anyone, it's probably France. Sure France doesn't medal as much as Hungary or Italy (and didn't even qualify for the Olympics), but they're the team who has actually managed to beat Korea twice this Olympic cycle. And even when they lose, it's close or they have Lambert over Seitz. And is Italy beating Hungary that big of a surprise? Like is Hungary usually that favoured? I don't know the match up well, but I'd usually say it's a 60-40 chance of Hungary winning no? Because even if Szilagyi is favoured against Luca in the 9th, Berre' and Samele are a better combination than Szatmari and Desci.
@@Dancingtuna well I believe Hungary is one of the teams that can fight Korea consistently to a close bout. sure, head to head wise, Korea has much greater winning rate against Hungary but most of the time, the bouts are close. once Hungary was defeated (and Germany too), it looked like Korea could have a field day in final (and a field day they did have) I think Korea v Hungary rivalry kinda analogous to Oh vs Szilagyi rivalry (how appropriate). Oh is one of the fencers that can keep Szilagyi's rampage in check (and most of the time, successfully) and vice versa. Once Oh was eliminated by Bazadze, it looked like no one could stop Szilagyi from claiming gold (though granted Bazadze fought brilliantly against Szilagyi)
@@christianalbertjahns2577 I understand where you are coming from, but that's exactly why I think France is more of a rival for Korea because they have managed to check them twice (which is more than anyone else this Olympic cycle). Even though Hungary has beaten Korea once, I still think that on any given day Hungary's chance of beating Korea is only around 20%, whereas France might even be around 40% (depending on who's fencing). Italy is probably at 10% Oh v Szilagyi is more of a real rivalry because their matchup history currently is 60-40 to Oh - so it's much closer. And even though I like Aron's fencing, I thought Bazadze was hard done by in the calls in the semis (might be a little conspiracy theorist, but I think that maybe even the refs wanted Szilagyi to win to bring more attention to the fencing cause 3 time consecutive gold medalist is a good story). I donno though, I'm not a sabre ref so I don't even know if my calls were right.

@@dzfz2100 I'm ashamed to say that I do have some epee footage, but I donno if there's much point posting it since the Olympic Channel has the epee final on their yt channel
I think Szilagyi's blades might have problems🤣🤣🤣 If it happens once or twice, it could either your opponent or you're way too unlucky😅 Yet, I have seen, much of the time, the light didn't go on when hit, and it happens a lot, not only at the Olympics, for example, at last leg with Oh in Leipzig 2017 WCH or with Hartung in Bronze medal bout (I came back here after the bronze bout)😂 Might need to be more be careful with his blade, LOL😂
I don't think that's a blade problem. I think it is probably a connection problem either with the wireless equipment or with his body cord, or both. Wireless equipment doesn't work as well as wired boxes in general, so it might be faults with the wireless. Sabre blades, unlike foil and epee ones, are just a strip of metal that completes a circuit when touching a lame jacket. There's just not much that could go wrong with that. When sabre hits do not register, sabre fencers usually do not change their blades, whereas foil and epee fencers usually would, because in sabre it is far more likely for there to be a body cord or box issue than a blade one
There is a slight possibility that the box thought his hits were whipovers due to the length of contact....which it will ignore. However, that didn't look to be the case, as his hits were solid. More likely an issue with the StM system. Have seen it fail at critical times before.
