Angela Lansbury joins The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square in a stunning performance of the title song "Beauty and the Beast," from the beloved 1991 Disney movie "Beauty and the Beast," in which she played the character of Mrs. Potts. Angela Lansbury joined the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square for their 2001 Christmas program, The Joy of Christmas.
"Beauty and the Beast" is based on the French fairy tale by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, “La Belle et la Bête” (1740). The Disney classic came out in 1991 and is well-loved for it's music and story. The lyrics to the song "Beauty and the Beast" are by Howard Ashman, the music is by Alan Menken, and the arrangement is by Lex de Azevedo.

Apparently when Angela went into the studio to record the song, she only had to sing it once, because her performance was so perfect. So perfect, in fact, that as she exited the booth, the entire team that was there was in tears.

Another fun fact - Lumiere is voiced by Jerry Orbach, who is known for Law and Order Detective Lennie Briscoe, and also for Harry McGraw, a detective friend of Jessica Fletcher's. I was a kid when Beauty and the Beast was released, and I hadn't seen Murder She Wrote but I knew about it and knew that Angela Lansbury was in a lot of things, but I didn't connect Lumiere with Harry McGraw until recently.

No. There was a performance six years ago when the film version came out. She was 91 then. A legend.
She also sang it at a 25th anniversary screening of “Beauty and the Beast” in 2016 - at age 90! Her voice is a little softer, but it is precious. It is a very moving performance, and I highly recommend watching it. (Have tissues ready.)

Every time she sings this song live includes the line with chip. Mrs. Pott's is more than just the song she's cuddly old lady that we all know or have known. And that line just makes it more real

She sings that song as if it’s not just the title song of the movie - she sings it as if it’s the fairytale itself... wonderful, so warm-hearted and magical! She puts her arms around everyone while singing!

I wonder how many children have been sent off to bed by this beautiful voice of Mrs. Potts. This is was the first film we took our children to and afterwards, when the soundtrack was available, I couldn't get my son off to bed without the help of Mrs. Potts. Rest in Peace Dame Angela Landsbury. The stage will be a little darker without you.

She always had that positive disposition in her works, and this one believes that she and the Disney crew were very good friends together when she starred in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks". Her performance as Mrs. Potts in "Beauty and the Beast" is her way of saying thank-you to both Disney, and to all the families in the world, for helping her become successful and beloved by Disney fans everywhere. She has the voice of an angel to go along with this magnificent performance with one of the most cherished choirs in the world. To Dame Angela Lansbusry, may you inspire us as a people to do only good, for ourselves and others, and to live your days in happiness and fulfillment, onwards and upwards.

I got to see this live. It remains one of the top 7 moments of my life. I didn't expect to hear this song because it's not a Christmas song and copyright issues with Disney so when she said "Howard Ashman" I was beyond thrilled. She sang one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite movies live.
I sobbed the entire song and was on my feet when Chip went to the cupboard. It was magical.
THEN, because it was the dress rehearsal she came back out and asked if we would mind if she sang it again because they needed more footage for the DVD. Dame Angela you can sing that song as many times as you want I'll sit here and love every second.

No one could ever sing this song as lovely and as elegant as Angela Lansbury. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is most beautiful in their choral accompaniment. This makes my heart sing and brings tears to my eyes. The absolute beauty of Ms. Landsbury and the MTC together must truly be a slice of Heaven.

I was at this particular performance. I was 16, and VERY gay, and very not LDS. My best friend had to bribe me to go, she did not tell me that Angela Lansbury was performing. It was one of the most magical days of my life. I cried then and Im crying now.

I love Angela Lansbury, my grandma and I spent so much nice time together watching Murder, she wrote. I know she starred in many other different shows, movies and plays but we watched Murder, she wrote with my grandma. Such nice times. My grandma is still alive and looking very similar to Angela Lansbury :) We just have to say "Let's watch Jessica" and we both now who the other one mean :)
