Maya, if you have the time, can you please compile material or make videos about survival skills for women who transition from city life to country life? (Specially skills that you learned on the farm.)

But my journey has been is some crazy alignment with Maya's...from our divorces a year apart, the big chop, to our big moves, career changes, and now I am getting married and moving to the UK from Canada. Like I dont even understand!!! I am going to gamble and pray that I will be pregnant by this year end lol!! God Willing!!!! Wish YOU BOTH THE VERY BEST!!! xox

I just love the transparency between the both of you. Like one will say something and then the other will follow it with "Well why do you feel that way, where does that come from, WE can work on that together" Just beautiful.

    If I had a Do Over I would…
I would save up for a home and learn how to grow produce, compost, budget, sew and cook. I am 55 years old and still living in Los Angeles, my birthplace. But, I’m planning to retire a bit early within the next 2-3 years and move to a more suburban area to own my own home. I think that I shouldn’t live too far from the city center, but I’m open to living in a less densely populated neighborhood where I can spend my time learning how to do those things on a small scale. I admire what you’re doing. I love your lifestyle. Your baby is going to grow up safe, free to explore, use his/her imagination during play and enjoy farm to table nutritious food. My hat’s off to the two of you. Cheers 🥂🥰

My journey began this year, I packed up 3 bags from the east coast and made the solo journey to the rainy countryside in Maui, HI. It's incredibly different living here than a major city. I love the change; its wet, rainy and refreshing. I'm learning to love and understand the land, taking time and space to grow and connect with mother nature is serving me very well in this moment.
I am so excited to watch your journey, I look forward to growing my own food and becoming self sustaining in the future.
    Ciao

I'm a SoCal native however I've lived all over Europe and I'm most comfortable living and working abroad. I fell in love with Scandinavia more specifically Sweden, Norway and Denmark. I love the small fishing towns country side. The clean simple food, culture and hospitable people pulled me in. I am in the planning stages of moving back to Abroad. Funny you mentioned Portugal because its definitely one of my top 5 countries l love visiting. I do own land in the states and l will build on it in the future. Currently l own a home as well but it was never my intention for it to be my forever home.

My goal is country in the city. A home with land with lots of space and trees and large enough for a huge "home garden" but only a 15 minute ride to "civilization". Also, please remember ( I know you all have been told this) a new baby will be the hardest thing you'll go through. It's joyous but hard. Just enjoy and let the time pass, do not be weary....I felt that on my spirit to say...lol.

I totally agree with learning to survive without the mass production of things, it will continue to be very much needed. I know it would be a huge adjustment and it would be challenging especially for my age but I do know that with help and learning I would be okay because I wouldn’t want to live to removed from a city.

What I've learned so far in my life with my own experience and observing others is this (which is normally a quote from Michel de Montaigne): "One should always have one's boots on and be ready to leave", because life is change and motion. You did that when you moved to the countryside and whenever you'll feel like it, you'll do it again somewhere else. I think it's a good approach to avoid staying stuck in a situation that is not aligned with your mindset.

As I was watching your video and you were talking about missing a community, I was thinking about these times that has honestly affected everyone in that manner. So I don’t think you’re the only ones to feel that way! I think craving a sense of belonging with likeminded people is not la but there’s also so much beauty in creating a little safe heaven for your little one.
Maybe like you said this is just this one phase before things start up again and you’ll think about the days when you had more of this rustic living and miss it! Who knows!
But anyways, I’m very happy for you both! I’ve been following you Maya since day 1 and I can’t believe how far you’ve come 😘❤️

We're a military family that moves every couple of years. Our retirement plan is to live about 45 minutes outside of a city. We want to become more self sufficient with the option of going to the city when we want to. The best of both worlds in my opinion. However, we have no idea where and we're open to moving out of the U.S. any suggestions would be appreciated.

We bought a house that needed a lot of work because it was sitting on 3 acres of land. Now that we have paid everything off we are updating our house and are in the processes of doubling the square footage of our house. The 3 acres has allowed us to grow our own food year round, because we also have a greenhouse. It's the best decision we've ever made. As far as proximity to the city, we are only 20 minutes away. Just like you all we also have a well, and exchange some of our goods with our neighbors. I actually believe we have the best of both worlds because we are far enough away from the city to avoid the hustle and bustle yet close enough when you want a night on the town.

It takes a long time to adjust to country life and self-sufficiency. A big part of that is actually community, sharing what you have with others and getting something in return.
When we started our gardening & farming journey last year (that will hopefully lead to a much more self-sufficient life in the near future), the elderly neighbours were all over us, gifting us plants and veggies, asking us questions and giving us tips. As we cannot have chickens right now, we get our eggs from neighbours, friends or the local market. We share our harvest with everyone who needs & wants.
So, no, you do not need to do EVERYTHING by yourself, the people in the documentaries etc also did not pop into the world, knowing everything and doing it ALL by themselves. They have family and/or community and have walked long paths to get where they are.
It is okay to need help and to take your time. It is a long process of unlearning, relearning, reshaping and growing with nature, not only from it. You 2 are doing great, keep going!
Lots of love from Pico Island (Portugal) :)

Thanks for sharing your country life experience!. As someone who is a city kid, growing up in Toronto and Copenhagen, I have always romanticised country life. I have some friends in Canada who are endeavoring to live lives in the countryside with small farms. But I don't know if I could do it. I think it sounds pretty amazing to be immersed in work to do with nature and outdoors living. It sounds healthy both physically and mentally, and your child will thrive and learn so much from this kind of lifestyle. Community is beautiful and important for one's well-being. Just having watched the Netflix documentary "High on The Hog", have you considered doing a harvest feast where you invite friends and people over you want to become friends with, even from the city, to come eat? Food always brings people together. You could even team up with someone who are growing different foods, making their own wine or similar and host together. For Maya, being a brown woman, I get that you also need your people, which is something I relate to. I think you should take this very seriously living in a country as white as Sweden, and focus on creating that community, also for the sake of your child. Representation and feeling seen are crucial for the child's upbringing. I would know having grown up in a predominately white society in Denmark. Regarding the language, Maya you are right, you need to learn it. Most Europeans and especially Scandinavians, are very good at English, but that doesn't take away the fact that knowing the local language will bring you closer to the culture. There is a sense of pride knowing the language of the country you decide to live in - for yourself and the native speakers - and like you said it shows an effort. It will be good for the child as well that you know both languages and essentially will be able to code switch. Good luck with learning! Definitely find a Swedish friend nearby and ask the person if she/he would like to get tea/coffee and practice the language for a couple of hours each week.

Did y’all answer any of the questions we asked for lolol maybe this isn’t that video. I grew up in the country and I love living close to everything. Maybe you’ll find the perfect balance. Love that you all aren’t stagnant.
