- Atun Shei Films directed a horror movie, called the Sudbury Devil. The genre can highlight societal fears and act as a cultural symbol of that, which this movie does well, with the added layer of some very interesting historical literacy. It uses a theme of scars from past (King Philip's War) affecting how New England conquered its frontier with witchcraft and satanism. By extension, it’s a commentary on settler colonialism and religiosity. So let’s thoroughly interrogate the Sudbury Devil, both its setting and meaning.

It’s a great movie, the cast is really really good. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would…I primarily ended up on Atun Shei’s site a few years ago because of Checkmate Lincolnites, but man, the dude is a Jack of all trades when it comes to storytelling. He’s a beast when it comes to his profession :D
Yoo thanks so much!
I started watching him also a couple years ago with Checkmate Lincolnites... Definitely a jack of all trades
Thanks man! We really put it all out there, I’m so proud of this film and probably will always be my favorite project to be a part of. One of my favorite parts is all the real ones out there who got it and loved it, we’re gorehouse low budget indie birds of a feather 😈
“What do you know about gratuitous sex? You don’t even have balls.”
“Meow”
Atun Shei deserves more attention. Both his historical videos and his fiction productions are great!
Very true.
Atun Shei is Awesome and I hope this opens the door for him to make more films with perhaps even studio backing! So glad you're covering it
1:30 Kitty got absolutely roasted 😂
I didn't know about the gratuitous sex, but that definitely sounds like something Andy would put in his film.
Atun-shei is an amazing creator I'm listening to the soundtrack right now and watching the birth of an American Town.
Noice
@@AtunSheiFilms 🤣🤣🤣I tried to listen to it while falling asleep... That didn't seem to work but I'm halfway through it listening to it a bit by a bit.
@@AtunSheiFilmsyour birth of an american town series is my current favorite of yours. Keep up your amazing work
I thought it was great, but in hindsight i wouldn't have brought my mom and aunt 😂
Love the channel; congrats on all you and Atun-shei have accomplished!
I just saw it despite having seen spoilers months before. Despite that, the ending still scared the ever-loving shit out of me. Nothing but high praise from me.
I'm a big fan of Atun Shei Films, thanks for introducing me to him on your channel.
This makes my day as a subscriber to both you guys. Keep up the good work!
I am very intrigued now! Excellent work!
The reveal of the twist sent my brain on a mental journey that went from Fred “The Slacktivist” Clark to Warhamner 40k.
Thanks for the synopses. I like Atun Shei and wish him well, but gore and violence literally turns my stomach. I get all the horror I need from the news.
It's honestly not that gorey. There's only two scenes in the movie that are explicitly violent.
Atun-Shei endlessly roasted Ron Maxwell for bloodless depictions of the Civil War, so it's only logical that his own movie is just hellish.
@@kristaskrastina2863 Interesting, thanks.
I don't remember the last time I heard a history youtuber other than Andy even mention king Phillips war
Though I haven’t seen that film yet, Atun-Shei puts out a lot of great stuff on TH-cam
Thanks to bringing this to our attention
My friend and I stayed late at night to watch this movie , and i gotta say
Unsurprised but still got taken aback regardless , absolutely loved it
You know what I'd love to see a movie be made about: The three men who were left behind in Roanoke by Francis Drake. A "going native" storyline.
Love your work (and love your cat). Looking forward to renting the movie.
I can't wait top watch this tonight!!!
I am not a fan of the whole low budget movie look, but I fully support Andrew.
No one focuses on New England history like Andrew does. I actually discovered his channel when I was in Sudbury, at BMW of Sudbury, purchasing my current vehicle.
I went through all his early videos while waiting to dot I’s and cross T’s.
He seems like a good guy, with a good head on his shoulders.
Atun shei did very well with the movie and it was worth it
Oh goody, debauchery!
You had me at "there's a ton of gratuitous sex"
I loved the movie. I thought it was very thought provoking.
I’m glad Andy made the movie uncomfortable. Because I feel like the kind of story he was trying to tell should be uncomfortable, and that makes it great
Yup! 😈♥️
I just watched this after months of procrastinating and the fact that people walked out of the theater you saw it in is unbelievably funny to me. reminds me of the French running out of the theater because they were scared of the train on screen.
Was i the only one who heard "For the devil nevrr sleeps" and was waiting for a WIL-SON?
This movie is nuts.
I'm still counting this as a crossover episode
1:32 You had me at fornication. :-P
Never seen this but I hope it got international release
I have been looking forward to this movie. However, I don't like slasher movies or gratuitous sex. So while I appreciate it, and have no doubt it is great, it's not for me. I will likely purchase access to it regardless to support Atun Shei Films.
KINGS TAIL IS POOFY!? It must be the DEVILS WORK! 👹🙀👹
DBEAUDHERY!!!!! Some one inform Bacchus!
I was excited to see my home city in a movie and then I realized its Subdury MA not ON lol
Excited for the sequel where we watch the American Devil transform over the years into his true form; Mickey Mouse.
...too soon?
there is a history in film that standing stones can make you ecstatic...so it wasn't completely gratuitous.
Atun-Shei _and_ Cynical Historian?
What is this, a crossover episode?
What a crazy time it must have been to be living on the North American continent at the time.
Thanks for the spoiler warning, I'll be back after watching the film.
Does Atun shei have an hatred for Boston and New England or something?
He is doing another series on his YT channel about the founding of Sudbury. Not hatred so much as trying to understand what happened.

The only thing I was not to keen on is the accents, I understand it is apparently what they possibly sounded like. But it just sounds off, I think doing regional british accents may work better, especially as it would be historically accurate and would allow more of the actors to be able to sound more authenticas they could act in the best impersonation they can do. Like in the VVicth having a yorkshire and especially one as deep and rough as Ralph Ineson's. It not just feels like it would be from that time, the accent did exist at that time.I think would have worked better. But still a great movie.
The Yorkshire accent of the time is not the same as a modern Yorkshire accent.
I don't understand how you think a Yorkshire accent would be more historically accurate.
