Porsche Cayenne Features - Pleasant Secrets and Surprises

  • This purchase was definitely influenced by ‪@HooviesGarage‬. No doubt about it. Before buying my first Porsche, an 04' Cayenne Turbo powered by a 4.5L Twin Turbo V8 I watched many TH-cam videos going over the lesser known features of the 955 Cayenne. This video is a combination of all those notes to share the quirks with my friends Andrew and Herman who I may not be able to show the car too in person for a long time.
    Quirks and features include:
Ignition on the left side of the wheel as in all Porsches
Double sun visors for the driver and front passenger
Electronically adjustable seatbelt height and tension
    Air suspension
Loading mode suspension height for cargo loading
All terrain lift via the air suspension
A cargo net built into the trunk shade piece
Air pump to inflate the tires or sports balls via the cars air compressor
A deflated spare tire in the trunk that should be inflated with the car's outlet system
    Adjustable Sport Suspension
The Cayenne key fob looks like a Cayenne complete with headlights, similar to Porsche key looking like a 911
The boost gauge is in Metric Bar rather than PSI (1 Bar is about 14 PSI)

Just picked up an 06 about a month ago. Nothing like buying one during the pandemic and inflation. Covered most of the weird quirks I noticed. But some of the nice surprises I noticed in mine:
    * The rear seats are heated and they lay completely flat when folded down. That cargo net also has holders when in that position - not just when the rear seats are up.
    * If the sunroof fails, it can still be manually operated.

I got one of these for my wife. You will love it!. Pro tips. If any weird warning lights come on.. check the battery. Even if it starts fine a low battery will cause all sorts of little electric bugs and warning lights like the AWD lights.. and makes it shift weird and idle rough.

Yeah one time I let the battery get too low on mine by leaving some stuff plugged in and running it on accessory and fell asleep. When I went to start it, it said "4wd system fault" or something like that. Revved it up and let the alternator charge it again, and I haven't seen it since.
One thing that is a pain is that my water pump failed... Overheated and trashed my motor. I'm in the process of putting a new one in. Good thing I own an auto repair shop... Although it CAN be done by someone mechanically inclined in their driveway or yard but it'll be pretty tough. Not sure if there's a way to contact people on TH-cam, but I have an ALLDATA subscription for these cars so if anyone needs any information on replacing something, I'll send it to you.

@@INSERTaccountHERE sure did. Had to replace the valve body in the transmission after that only because of the plastic coolant pipes that leaked into the transmission housing. Shift solenoid was bad but I figure I'd take care of that too. Engine swap required a lot more than my little Mercedes SLK. Not something I look forward to ever having to do again haha. Congratulations. I got my 2003 Cayenne Turbo in September 2020. It is my 6th Porsche. I live on the edge of the desert in New Mexico. It is excellent on and off road, but there are no available true off road tires that fit the factory 20" wheels. Option, lower tire pressures off road and use the compressor to bring them back up when you're done. Note that Porsche is a two syllable name.

Jon, I have a 2003 Cayenne S and I bought some 18 inch Porsche rims off craigslist, painted them black...bought Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus tires - 265/65 R18 and those exact tires fit the car perfectly - no rub - and are true off road tires but are quiet and the car actually handles better. I was and am amazed. I love those tire so much I put them on my 15 passenger Ford Van that I take to Baja.

I have a 2005 Cayenne S with only 28k miles. I bought it from the family of the owner who bought a handful of vehicles after a terminal diagnosis. It has been amazing for the two years and 15k I have put on it. I have replaced the tires, battery and other time sensitive items, and change the oil myself every 3k. I upgraded the radio w/ a new style infotainment system, and installed many carbon Fiber pieces. I will keep this truck until it falls apart, which likely won’t happen in my lifetime. I divide my driving between the Cayenne, an 86 Mercedes 300E, and two 997 series 911’s.
One is a Coupe, one is a Cab. They are all the vehicles I will ever need. These German built cars are generally easy to work on, and are all built to last. They are vehicle investments vs expense. The low mile used Cayennes are one of the best vehicle deals of our lifetime.

You appear to have a highly desirable off- road option. It appears you have factory rock sliders which if were not put on after then you have 3 locking differentials. Move your off-road switch forward and see if all 3 lights light up or if just 2 do. If you have that option this is a pretty rare beast that is highly sought after in the off-road community of these. It is an extremely capable off-road suv.

I believe on turbo models with air suspension if you go over a certain speed it automatically will lower the car.. And the headlights will come on if set on auto. I heard this but haven't been able to actually try it as mine is just an non turbo S model.
Also if you hold the MAIN button on the nav screen/radio and press TRIP, you can get information on firmware for the nav, CD player, etc.
Not sure if you have opened the side compartments in the rear hatch area on the left and right, but mine has a Porsche brand battery jump box and portable air compressor too.
The navigation dvd is stored under the front passenger seat. If you don't have navigation, it makes for a great storage area. I believe some cars had the fire extinguisher stored there.
And the steering wheel buttons can be used from the back of the wheel too. Hard to explain but I guess I'm trying to say to press them from the back of the button with your fingers instead of from the front with your thumb.
Not really a Cayenne quirk, but if you get one of those cheap little 12v USB car chargers from autozone for like $6-7 (the tiny ones with one USB port) they fit in the front console outlet just enough to where you can close the ashtray door and it stays plugged in. I just let the wire come through the side of the ashtray door. Nice to charge stuff without having it open. (I smoke, so sometimes leaving it open with the windows down causes ashes to blow all over the place so this is highly convenient.)
Not sure if you know how to use the front and rear fog lights, but pull on the knob that you use to turn the headlights on when it's in the running light or headlight position.
The sunroof controls are awesome since you can turn the knob somewhere in between open and closed and the sunroof will open however much depending on how much you have it turned. (those little dots on the dial)
Also our cars take off in 2nd gear by default. Turning PSM off or manual shifting will let you take off in first gear. The transmission will automatically upshift for you in case you forget to when PSM is on.. When it's off it'll just keep revving until you do it yourself.

@@shouldigetit Soooo, funny story of the "S". I am an HVAC Tech and was getting my work van repaired. Got to talking and mentioned the P word and he asked me if I wanted to buy a Porsche. Asked what it was and to be honest, when the Boxsters came out, I wasn't too impressed. Told him so and he replied "I just want to get my $1,500 back out of it" Needless to say that changed my mind some so went to look at it. A guy brought it in for a clutch replacement, and never paid his bill. So originally I was going to take it home and strip it and sell it for funds to put the aircooled back together. Bought the title for $500 and paid the repair bill and drove it hoome for under 3K. Started learning about the "S" version and as I drove it home, my mind quickly changed on what I was going to do with it. A week after I bought it I found some black rims to match the rest of the car and it changed the ENTIRE persona of the car. I put about 5 grand in suspension last summer and now its as tight as a drum. SO if we compare the two cars, 9111 vs 986. Both have a 3.2, both weigh in about 2,700 lbs, 911 has a 5 speed, Boxster has a 6 speed. 911 is rear engine and so has the weird rear weight bias tendencies if your not careful, 986 is of course mid engined and LOVES clover leafs LOL The 911 is valuable enough to only restore it and make it 100% original, the Boxster is getting made into what I want out of a street car. Jack Raby is making 400 HP out of the original M96 engines and that's my long term goal. Now I just gotta find that perfect 928 S4 ;)

Hi Toria! The exclamation mark sounds like a TPMS sensor (Tire pressure measurement system) which means you either have a flat tire or your tires are fine but there is an issue with the sensor, or the sensors may have been removed by a previous tire shop. OK, I own a 2008 Cayenne Turbo S. I love it. To answer, the seat belts move up and down in order to adjust belt comfort for various sizes people
For example, for smaller chested skinny folk, you are probably fine with the set belt being raised up all the way. By doing so, it increases the tension on the belt across your chest.
For larger people, you lower the seat belt which brings the harness down closer to your left shoulder. By doing this, the belt has less tension and puts less pressure against your left shoulder.
    It actually does work well.
However, I agree it's mostly a gimmick, bc a seat belt is loose and moves until a crash.
Many other cars have this se exact feature. My wife's Lexus IS350F has a this to adjust manually. And when I ride in passenger seat I always adjust it on longer trips and it makes huge difference on my right shoulder bc the seat itself is smaller and more narrow. Therefore the seat belt ses always firmly pressed against my right shoulder. If I lower the belt holder on my upper right, the tension eases .

I got a 2005 Cayenne I bought used for $8k with 120k miles on it way back in 2014.
I still only have 143k on it now, but I haven't had any real major problems, other than $6k worth of front end work when "Evil Kinevil" pulled his motorcycle out in front of me.
Other than that, I just had to get the AC fixed, replace the window motor in the passenger door, and get the rear window and door lift shocks replaced.
I live in Phoenix 115 DEGREE HEAT, so I did have get it particially repainted twice.
But I got an itch a few months ago and decided to drive it down to Puerto Vallarta Mexico for a few months long vacation.
I ended up driving over 4000 total miles, down there and back and all over central Mexico from Puerto Vallarta to as far East to Monterrey and back up to Phoenix.
I never had even one bit of problems, and I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND IT!
I even decided to replace my tires down there, not because I needed them, only because the Goodyear's brand that cost me $600 each here in Phoenix, I got 4 for $1200 there in Puerto Vallarta.🤓
But, I wouldn't at all suggest driving at night in Mexico. Not it's because of the "criminal" element they talk so much about in the clickbait hungry media, with their stories that are totally overblown and by the State Department.
Those sensationalized STORIES are done every year around Spring Break, lime clockwork, mostly to keep Americans BLINDLY spending there vacation money here in the US...UGGH!!!!
In Mexico, the roads where truckers run down there are even in much better condition than many States here in the US, plus I never seen even one COP with a radar gun on the entire trip!
The reason is there is seemingly NO SPEED LIMIT enforcement even when the top posted speed limit is 85 to 90 miles per hour...
Also, their truckers can pull 48 foot DOUBLE trailers even at NIGHT...
Which nearly COST ME a fatality statistic, when one of them was doing a U-turn on a divided freeway just outside of the view of my headlights😳😵
After I came to an abrupt STOP, I said a prayer for German BRAKE engineering, because I tried to locked them up, but the anti-lock braking system never allowed my BRAND NEW Goodyear tires to skid, and they stopped the car from 65 mph down to ZERO, less than 4 feet from me going UNDER THE REAR TRAILER!!!
And its weird, because less that 4 months before that, which is probably why I decided to do what I had been DAYDREAMING about in that Mexico drive.
Near Phoenix of all places all over the Country I've SLEPT, I had my only OTHER NEAR FATALITY in my 62 years of life, with 22 of those years driving over 2 million miles in 18 wheelers, when a drunk driver hit my own 18 wheeler one night right on my right side, 100 gallon FULL FUEL TANK, which was right below where I was fast asleep in the bunk😮😱
The "accident" left a TOTALED Honda Accord, a nearly totaled Freightliner truck, but not a scratch on me or the drunk driver, and lot of leaking DIESEL FUEL all over the place...
Luckily for both of us, there was NOT EVEN ONE SPARK!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I guess you all can tell I'm BORED right now... LOL
Actually, I can on here looking to see how I can jump start another car with my Cayenne, and whike sitting here waiting for the battery to charge up, I ended up going DOWN THIS CAYENNE VIDEOS RABBIT HOLE🤣😅😂

Not sure how mechanically inclined you are, but the metal coolant pipes cost between $175-$250 and takes a few hours to fix. Dealer will charge about $3000. If you don't fix them immediately, it could flood out your starter. This is only an issue on the v8 models. If you have documentation of the past history of the car, they may have been replaced already.

@@shouldigetit if you want a nicer sound for real cheap, you can go to an auto parts store and buy some exhaust piping repair kits.. I believe 1 7/8" but dont quote me on that. (just Google internal muffler bypass or something of the sort for our 955 cayennes. Just take the exhaust tip off, slide the pipes in and put them back on. It bypasses all of the noise canceling stuff in the muffler. It's quiet enough not to be obnoxious while idling and louder when you stomp the accelerator. (only other thing is you might need a dremel or saw blade to file down the small tab inside the driver's side muffler... It makes no difference with the tab being there... Just makes it possible to get the pipe in.
Plus it's reversible in minutes if you don't like it and will only cost you like $20.
