I raised countless chickens and turkeys over the past 50 years. One thing that I didn’t have was roosters, I didn’t want fertilized eggs. Some laid 2 eggs a day for 3 years. Most important is calcium! They must have calcium! Laying mash is not enough. Also another important part to their diet is greens. I threw in grass clippings weeds, and etc. Blessings on your chickens.

When I was a child growing up in Texas, we were very poor and, at the age of 10, I got a setting hen and 10 eggs from my grandmother in order to grow meat chickens and layers. That meant food on the table. I was telling some old retired guys at my father's ice house about my hen when a man named Mr. Capp told me that i should go to the feed store and buy some baby chicks and place them under the hen at night and she would raise them also. I had no money, so I searched for soda bottles and sold them for 4 ce3nts each and got $1.20 and bought 12 chicks and placed them under the hen. She accepted them and raised 22 chickens. My chickens were free range and as time passed I had a yard full of chickens. I noticed that the dominate rooster had a harem of about 19 hens and ranged near the house; he was called Boss. The second rooster in the pecking order had only 3 hens and was allowed to range near the property line. The 3rd rooster had only 1 hen and was required to stay in a nearby pasture. Two other roosters had no hens and were constantly on the run.
