Interesting fact about counterfeiting: During the American Civil War, aka The War of the Rebellion, the Union attempted to devalue Confederate currency by printing counterfeit bills. The Confederates mints however, were seriously defunded as a result of the war; thus, Union counterfeit bills were of higher quality than the Confederates actual currency. Ironically many Southerners began exclusively using Union counterfeit bills since they were of higher quality and less prone to accidental destruction.
it was a lot easier to get away with counterfeiting back then...well, sort of. the U.S. Government had a heck of a time coming up with the system that we have today. there are simply too many ways a government can either ruin the value of its currency, over spending and printing too much. plenty of governments have gone bankrupt due to the temptation and ease of just printing more money when you want to spend more money. This is why precious metals and thus coins have been around for so long, even if the government minting the coin goes bankrupt, the coin will never lose the value of the metal its made with. anyhow, the states couldn't agree on a policy or a way to setup a mint and or a bank in the U.S. By the time the Civil War started in 1861, the U.S. Bank had been created and failed at least 3 times. The states just didn't trust the federal government enough to imbue it with the authority to tax sufficiently and to oversee the economy without interfering. So, states printed their own money. The size of the bills varied as much as the quality of their currency...it would've been a easy pickings for counterfeiters but war broke out and the currency that was made of paper, started to lose its value..back to the drawing board for the U.S.

One of my favorite stories from my grandpa, is the fact that he used to work in a print shop. There were only two in town who had the special permits to purchase and own the paper for dollar bills. For fun, they printed some dollar bills but didn't actually use it. A couple weeks later, feds show up on the door step asking if they had produced counterfeit bills. Obviously they said no. A couple weeks later they find out the only other print company in town with the permit had produced counterfeit bills around the same time, but had actually used them instead of destroying them.

On each of the notes you have the 05 or 10 or 20 in yellow, These are in a particular pattern which is what prevents scanners printers and software from allowing you to open it. It is called The Eurion Constellation
I noticed the FW on one of the bills, when you were showing the small numbers. You forgot to mention that FW designates a bill printed in Fort Worth. An interesting story, from 15 to 20 years ago. There was a married couple working at the Fort Worth currency center. The husband's job was to destroy the bills that were not printed right. Somehow, they figured out how to get these past the heavy security that place has. They were eventually caught. They noticed that there were bills in circulation, that were supposed to be destroyed, but they did not have the * mark next to the serial number. If you pay attention to the serial numbers on your money, a bill will show up with an * next to the serial number. This denotes that this bill is a replacement for one that was messed up. When the bills, that were supposed to have this, showed up without the * they new something was up. The FW mark showed they came from Fort Worth. After an extensive investigation they narrow it down to this couple. It has been so long now, that they may be out of the Federal Pen.

Counterfeit pens will show newspaper, phonebook pages, ect, to be good. A famous forger found this out by accident and found newspaper printers were only to happy to give him free paper that was not used on the rolls. He used a changing auto paint to replicate the changing color. He sandwiched a crappy portrait in between a front and back of a forger bill. Did the same for the strip. Used editing software to slightly enlarge the impossibly clear small letters so the appeared to be really clear. There was a great Rolling Stone article on him. Great video guys!
Lasky Labs I’m sure as long as it doesn’t have red and blue stripes in it and has a similar color to US bills they can’t right fully cease it, could end up a possible court case
fun fact: under a black light, the strip of color on the bill has micro writing that states the bills value. On a $20 for example, you are able to read “twenty” across the strip when under a black light.
Replace the yellow toner cartridge on your laser printer with a dummy cartridge that reports itself as being full, then print the document. then swap your cyan, magenta, or black cartridge with the yellow one, adjust your printer to print yellow on the cyan channel (for example) and run it through again. (or use another printer so you don't put yellow on the cyan fixer roller, etc.) bam. no yellow dots!

How about an episode on some basic first aid practices? Or how about CPR? Shuffle cards? How to fell a tree? Fire without matches? Bartering/Haggling? Tie knots? Just a couple of ideas I came up with in case you wanna use them for an episode.
The pen are worthless. They will only detect wood pulp paper and only have bout a 80% detection rate for that. There are treatments that can be done to paper to defeat them. And they won't work at all on bleached and reprinted notes.
The polymer currency that Australia pioneered has even finer details, even more texturing, and so many more anti-counterfiting measures that it puts American bills to shame
Did you guys know about the EURion pattern, a series of circles printed on many banknotes? It was there on the Five and the Ten you showed, the series of 05's and 10's on the left side of the face. It can be detected when the note is digitised and will prevent things such as colour copiers from running off a weekends worth of fun...
At 13:00 he was referring to an iodine pen, which when used on stuff with a high starch content, will change color. The problem is you can't rely on this technique, as some laundry detergent have a high starch content. So, if you literally wash fake money with said laundry detergent, you'll make the pen change color.
These dots on printings is by the system named eurion whitch is also on bank notes. That system includes date when this printing was made, serial number of the printer, name of the printer and the computer.

All great suggestions!
Bleaching the notes wouldn't work with euros because they have different sizes according to their value
The pen are worthless. They will only detect wood pulp paper and only have bout a 80% detection rate for that. There are treatments that can be done to paper to defeat them. And they won't work at all on bleached and reprinted notes.
Not to mention that the good fakes are smaller ones made to be bigger ones.

At 13:00 he was referring to an iodine pen, which when used on stuff with a high starch content, will change color. The problem is you can't rely on this technique, as some laundry detergent have a high starch content. So, if you literally wash fake money with said laundry detergent, you'll make the pen change color.
