    What these people are going to go through will be terrible, but it passes and they will get through it. I am in Stuart, FL and we had the same thing 20 years ago. We had a direct hit from Francis which stayed stationary for 24 hours. It chewed up my roof and I lost all the shingles and water was pouring in. All the interior ceilings collapsed while we were in the house with my three kids, the youngest was 1. They were all crammed into my closet. We were in the house 24 hours trapped while it fell around us. Then we couldn’t get out of the neighborhood for hours until we chainsawed through all the trees blocking us in. My wife’s parents lived 10 miles away and were fine so we went there. A week later Jean took the same trajectory and destroyed the rest of the house while we were at my in-laws. Their pool enclosure collapsed into the pool and I spent the next day pulling it out and chopping it up and getting it out of the pool. We were flooded in and couldn’t leave to the point there were fish swimming at the end of the driveway and in the flooded road. We had no power for 16 days. My sister in law and I took two bikes and put them in kayak s and we towed out of the neighborhood until we hit dry land and then rode the bikes the 10 miles to my house to see if it was still there. We eventually fixed it. FEMA and the government did nothing. Just had to fight with insurance and they dropped me the minute the house got fixed. It’s been 20 years and I haven’t had any damage since. It was surreal but it toughened me up. A lot of people in this country need some toughening up.

    I don't understand why architects haven't designed buildings to withstand hurricanes in that area. It CAN be done, it just take human effort.

    • @bjarnisigurdsson1911
      @bjarnisigurdsson1911 11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +6

      The building in Miami are now able to withstand the hurricane itself. The codes were changed after Hurricane Andrew destroyed Homestead.
      Now flooding is the bigger issue there when it comes to property damage.
      The thing that is often not mentioned is that Hurricanes also spawn Tornadoes and those you can't really fortify whole communities for.
      Helene is stated to have spawned 10 tornadoes in SC alone.
      As stated on a storm information site:
      "Individual storm clouds within hurricanes may spawn tornadoes as a hurricane makes landfall, with tornado production continuing, in some instances, for several days after landfall. Tornadoes are most likely to occur in a particular quadrant of a hurricane. Some research suggests that the preferred quadrant is the right-front quadrant relative to a hurricane’s direction of propagation, but other research suggests that the northeast quadrant is preferred for tornado production regardless of the hurricane’s propagation direction. Regardless, tornadoes typically form in the part of a hurricane where the vertical wind shear is largest. If a hurricane interacts with a front or it ingests air that is unstable, tornado production will become more favorable in those regions of the hurricane. Tornadoes typically form in the spiral rainbands of a hurricane, but tornadoes have also been observed in the eyewall. Some hurricanes may produce no tornadoes, while others develop several. In general, tornadoes associated with hurricanes are relatively weak and short lived, especially in comparison to those that occur over the Great Plains of the United States. Nonetheless, the effects of tornadoes, added to the effects of hurricane-force winds, can produce substantial damage."

    Last night I had a dream about Hurricane Milton. In my dream the hurricane started hooking North as it approached Florida's gulf coast. It then started hugging the gulf coast of Florida and headed straight North hitting the cities of North Florida very hard (Tallahassee and other cities).
    I don't know if this will happen but when I woke up from this dream I felt very shaken. I told my mom about this dream and asked her to warn our relatives in North Florida to also prepare for this possible outcome. Right now no one is expecting this hurricane to hook North but if it does no one in North Florida is expecting this scenario and they haven't been preparing for this hurricane.
    If you live in North Florida you need to be watching this hurricane closely and possibly leave Florida as well. If this hurricane does hook North and you live in North Florida you need to leave quickly. If you can't leave then find a concrete commercial building (or concrete hotel) to take shelter in. You need to go to the second or third floor of the building (not the top floor where the wind could peel away the roof of the building). Take your emergency supplies with you to this commercial building (water, food, flashlights, radio, etc). Take this monster very seriously!

    Floridian’s are super resilient humans. Literally we prepare for disasters every year whether they come or not and pivot in regard to those disasters within hours depending on what’s happening. All day long my ring doorbell app community messages have been going off with people offering to help put up shutters, give away extra gas cans etc. to prepare for Milton because that’s who Floridian’s are. If there’s a zombie apocalypse, we’re more ready than the rest of y’all for sure!

    I thought about the voting thing as well. Told some friends and family about it here in NC and of course.. they called me a conspiracy theorist smh. I wasn’t as badly affected but I can only imagine being in that situation. Voting would be the last thing on my mind. I wonder if the hurricane hit a blue state how fast they would be to not only send help but set up mobile voting centers for them. This is sad.

    I’ve lived in Florida since my folks moved us here in 1972, when I was only 8 yrs, and have seen and been through many hurricanes throughout the years. This one though is highly unusual, I can’t ever remember one starting in the west Gulf of Mexico and heading east to Florida’s west coast, it’s unheard of.
    It looks like it could be catastrophic for the bay area and anywhere within 100 miles south or north of that depending exactly where Milton comes ashore. The highways out of the area are backing up already and moving very slowly, a standstill in spots. My wife is currently northbound on US19 as the bridges are a traffic nightmare leading from St Pete to Tampa and the storm is still 2 days out. After Helene everyone is taking this storm seriously, as even if it should weaken, there is still a high probability of serious flood and wind damage.

I live in the Port Arthur, TX are where it flood's, tropical storms, and hurricanes hit that area every single year some years the storms would go to other area's but it's still in that area, I understand these people concerns and complaints but the people that live in that area you have to keep in the back of your head, that you live in a hurricane area, so you have to be ready to pack up and leave at a drop of a dime, my question is, why would you move down there??

They died in their late-90s during Covid (but not from Covid) & were in a 24/7 medical-treatment hospice place near Jungle Larry's (now called Caribbean Gardens).

    The severity of hurricane damage in Florida depends not only on the category of the storm but also in which cities you live in. Example while Miami may go through a Category 4 hurricane it’s not even raining in Gainesville. It’s about location.

  • @afisanaa
    @afisanaa 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +6

    I been in Florida since 1997 and I have never dealt with a direct hit. The hurricane does not hit the same area every year. Tampa has been spared for over 100 years. When it is your time for the hurricane to hit your area it is your time.
    I have lived in Central America and did not like the earthquakes on a regular and the aftershocks. Don't like the winters in the North either.
    *THE* only season I like is summer and spring so Florida is where I will stay.

    I feel bad for FL. I always wondered the same, why live there with so many possibilities of hurricanes. I live in Louisiana. We get them too, prob seecond as much to FL. But, at the end of the day, its up to what you can bear or want to deal with. Up north, cold, brutal winters. Loose power, you freeze to death poasibly. Icy roads, etc. Mid west, tornadoes and twisters that destroy whatever in its path. West coast, mud slides, earthquakes, wild fires, down south, hurricanes, tropical storms, burning heat, high humidity. So when its 90 it feels like 115. I mean, pick your poison. All of them you have to deal with some bs. But which one can you deal with in order to live the life you want.
