  • A local photographer captured a rare phenomenon on the shores of Newport Beach where bioluminescent waves light up the ocean. The beautiful ocean light show was caught on camera earlier this week and is usually caused by algae in the water. Details: abc7.la/2VeyzGx

This is Red Tide. Not all that rare. Though this seems especially luminescent.

it's a bioluminescent dinoflagellate bloom..aka a red tide. we get them from time to time. it's caused by a certain type of plankton. i got my degree in marine biology and i used to work at SCMI, so i have seen lots of red tides. we operated research vessels out of terminal island it's still open, actually. once we took a research vessel down to SCRIPPS and ran across a night bloom like this on our way to san diego. it was absolutely magical! dolphins were cutting through the inky water and leaving trails of sparkles and reverse shooting stars. it's just a red tide, but at night it looks like this. your foot prints glow in the sand, too. it's just from the agitation of the dinoflagellates that makes them set off their bioluminescence. and it's NOT radiation like the other idiot said, but it can be toxic to some fish and cause die off, too. it's not harmful to humans like that. i never comment on youtube videos, but i hate misinformation. it's just a red tide, geeze.
