I kinda wish the show treated Shawn's home life as abuse because it was. That one episode with Claire and her abusive father, how they treated it, was good. However for some reason the show, which showed clear negligent abuse and abandonment towards Shawn, they didn't show the seriousness it should have. When Shawn's father leaves him the first time and the teacher brought him in to stay with him, it just wouldn't happen as far as I'm aware. What they should have done was inform the police or the fire department and the state would enroll him in foster care or an adoption center, or a group home, or something. the teacher didn't even formally try adopting Shawn until much later which ended up not going through. It wasn't fair that they put a laugh track over some of the scenes that should've been taken seriously. Anyways, I think a kids show of a main character showcasing the nitty-gritty real life experiences of a kid that isn't privileged, like Shawn, would be really good to show to kids. Instead they show the more privileged, and they laugh off the scenes they can with Shawn. I don't think they did his character justice.

Oh...and the whole thing with having Shawn be a father figure for Maya...just as John (aka Mr. Turner) was a father figure for him...I never thought that made any sense either. PS, GMW WAS NEVER EVEN IN THE RUNNING TO "COMPETE" WITH "BOY MEETS WORLD".
