Scott- thanks for the spreadsheet. I wan't able to use it because the macros do not work on Excel for OSX. However, even without it, I was still able to kill Capsim with ending stats of $317 million cumulative profits and $299 share price. Even though I consistently had stock-outs in every round.
I was never able to figure out how to use the spreadsheet properly. With that being said, if you are about to start Capsim and consulting the web for advice, you're probably doing better than the rest of your classmates. I ended up winning in my class and being familiar with the program on day one put me gave me a strong advantage. My "strategy" didn't include introducing new products or changing their market. We just invested the most money into promo and sales, and in TQM, looked at the growth rate for each segment, and then produced a capacity that would meet X% of demand. We always just guessed what that percentage would be based on customer survey score and LY units sold. it gradually grew from 20% at the beginning to an average of 33% by the final round... total domination. AND we fucked up and got a big al loan the first round costing points every round after that!! Just remember, it ain't over 'till it's over. This simulation was the most fun part of my entire undergrad experience. The professor was a finance professor so as he explained the results, he really refreshed us on the significance of each ratio and I ended up taking a lot away from the class. HAVE FUN!!! But don't forget it is a competition and your GPA is on the line.
