  • *** the homeless man that was next to us during this interview listened to Dejaris talk about growing up in foster care. He started to think about his own family and called them. His family said come home. I ran into him at the train station as he was headed home to family. • The homeless man next ...
at 16:35 shares his 3rd wish to keep making people happy and shared with us a few impressions and a song.
Dejaris has been homeless since he was 21. He is 39 now. That's 18 years sleeping outside without a home.
Dejaris grew up in foster homes. Children growing up outside of their natural family often have a hard time adjusting. He talks about going through a lot of experiences including being restrained and forced medication because he was acting out.
Compared to other youth in the United States, kids who age out of foster care are more likely to not have completed high school or received a GED, they often suffer from mental health problems, many are unemployed and live in poverty, and nearly 40% become homeless.
Approximately 400,000 youth are currently in foster care in the United States. Approximately 20,000 of those youth age-out each year without positive familial supports or any family connection at all. Within 18 months of emancipation, 40-50% of foster youth become homeless. Nationally, 50% of the homeless population spent time in foster care.
Dejaris got into some trouble as a youth and ended up in jail. He continued on a path of going from program to program. Dejaris spent most of his young life in the system.
Dejaris spent most of his time experiencing homelessness in Washington DC. Dejaris schizophrenia and bipolar and says the mental health service providers are overwhelmed and undertrained. Without housing, Dejaris tries to deal with his mental illness as an outpatient.

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as TH-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Over the years, I’ve given many videos cameras to homeless people hoping they would vlog more. A few have but not for long. It’s a person choice that people have to make on if they want to talk about homelessness.
Many years ago, I built a website to teach social media to homeless people to amplify their voices. That too didn’t work.
It’s kind of tricky getting people who have to focus on survival every day to give time to advocacy.
Your idea is a good one and I still thing of ways to make it happen. Someday I do hope to do more.

Why is a four year degree required for a poverty paying position in which REAL knowledge of the situation is the most important requirement?

He certainly made ME happy explaining his vision for a shelter.
He would make a lot of money if he puts on a show. This could be his audition tape.
If he puts those two ideas together: the show as his job, and the shelter as his charitable calling, I think he will thrive. It's just a matter of how to implement it, and get it started.
I think this guy will be alright. I wish him well. And, I'm glad to see him tell the truth about who should be in line first for housing, and how to get them going again, when they do get housing.
    Thanks, Mark, for this video.

This guy is so delightful. He could be a famous entertainer, and instead he is on a curb. He has the same skills as other singers and impersonators. He has such good ideas for helping others, he should be a social administrator. Then he is just so pleasant and personable. It seems like he has been neglected and taken advantage of by people his whole life. Yet he looks great: strong, healthy, nice white teeth, clear eyes, and is alert and engaged with his surroundings. He doesn't look all stressed out, troubled and beaten down like some do on the street. I think God has been looking after him. It has been a long time coming, but some day, that change is going to come.
It is just amazing how this society sorts itself out with rotten people on the top and great people on the bottom. He had to beg an illegal immigrant to stay in a garage crammed full of 60 men and she still kicked him out. God is watching the whole thing, but I know one thing, judgment is coming. Whatever happens in this country, this man is someone who knows how to survive.

This man went through so much as a kid,not his choice. It was out of his control.i can see how he was affected and became homeless.Who do you trust if you can't trust your own parents? Of course he was acting out,and of course big pharma had to step in,instead of understanding he had a reason to be acting out, they come in diagnose and force medicate him to get their piece of the profit. It's all about money as they don't care about the individual. This man just needs a job,a home, guidance,so for the first time in his life he can be allowed to be a real man. If I still had my business,I would hire him in a second. He is well spoken, just needs a hand and a chance.I pray someone out here sees his story and helps him.

I think giving these people a voice provides an important service in part by giving faces to the real issues affecting the world and hopefully spark the will to address them. I think hearing these real-life stories is also humbling. One thing many of these individuals can teach is the rest of us is how important the power of will is. Now of course I don't condone drug use, but not all of these homeless use drugs which is not the easiest path, at least in the short run. I hope this individual will find a way out of homelessness as well as find proper treatment for his various mental issues. I used to live in DC and also struggled with emotional issues stemming from personal losses in my immediate family. While living in the NE area I met the nicest neighbors which I did not expect. These people were not living in those ugly McMansions, but in the old town houses. They were kind and even though I had just moved to the area treated me like they had known me forever. Such kindness is truly beautiful.

This man so probably unable to be hired anywhere due to his criminal record. I do not support criminal activities, but for how long must he suffer for his infractions? Once you pay your time in prison, the person should be given immunity as he/she paid for their crime. Of course, most people will not take a chance on an ex-convict. If I were there on D.C., I would talk to him and purchase him gobs of food. The fact that he is mentally ill only makes his life more difficult.
G-D, PLEASE BE WITH THIS MAN AND HELP HIM GREATLY IMPROVE HIS SITUATION!

It sounds like even with his struggles, he isn't really looking for just a handout. I wish him well....homelessness is horrendous and mental health is real!

Yes, I'm so tired of seeing wickedness prevail. Its time for some nice people to be wealthy. And some wicked to live a life of struggle. We got it now. Can everyone else get it.

This gentleman is welk mannered and decent. I don't know how such wonderful people are in such a bad condition. While the bad ones are wearing ties and suits. Feels really bad. He is really intelligent and has a great accent.

Anyone else notice just how unselfish all these homeless people are when they are given 3 hypothetical wishes all while they themselves are in dire need every day?

I really enjoyed listening to him. Hard to go see therapist, when homeless and no.place to shower. He appears to be coping well, considering all that he is going thru.

Homelessness shouldn’t exist anywhere and everyone deserves to be given that second chance
