    Demon is very commonly used to translate the Sanskrit word ‘asura’. Demon is considered in the biblical tradition as the personification of evil. Demons are the ones who support all that is sinful and vile in this world and cause all its sufferings. Hinduism does not have concepts like demon, devil or Satan. Asura is used to denote someone who takes pleasure only in enjoying the materialistic life. Although asuras generally possess many vices, this is not an inviolable rule and there are instances where even an asura has displayed extraordinary virtues. In this video Babaji and Rajiv take a close look at the concept of ‘asura’ in Hinduism. This will help us to recognize the differences between ‘asura’ and ‘demon’.

    This is excellent . Thank you. I really appreciate your series on these non-translables . it is a movement of Imperialism that coined words from the Imperialist culture to superimpose onto the culture they wished to dominate.
    This is very, very good that you are revealing this, and correcting the wrong. Thank you, Rajivji.

    Asura is a state of being.
    Someone with certain characteristics or traits are considered as Asura.
    Such characteristic can be:
    1) Doing things which are not supposed to be done
    2) Doing it at a time or place which is prohibited

    In Advaita also we say, God has become this world and everyone
    In Ramayana also it is said, that without his will a leaf also doesn't move

    2:12 "so they are cousins..." this statement is incorrect. Father of both the Asura and Deva's is Kashyap Muni, they have the same father, so they are Half Brothers. They are also cousins if you see ONLY the maternal side, however, as they have the same Father they are actually half brothers. Excellent interview & have great respect for you work.

    It’s beautiful as whole story teaches to reflect within and not without, showing we are the one who create good or bad. the demonic representation seems to be the spiritual description of ones own qualities hence you start searching the wrong within. Vedic knowledge is empowering and self reflective for the listener. Empowering: as it teaches you not to fear world out but to fear of own wrong qualities and better them.

    In Vedic period, Asura is used extensively a way to describe a powerful being.
    Asu+ra means one who posesses power. Indeed many Vedic deities and words have this stucture:
    Indra = Ind+ra
    Rudra = Rud+ra
    Vrtra = Vrt+ra
    etc...
    Asura is used as an adjective meaning "powerful" or "mighty". In the Rigveda, two generous kings, as well as some priests, have been described as asuras. One hymn requests a son who is an asura. In nine hymns, Indra is described as asura. Five times, he is said to possess asurya, and once he is said to possess asuratva. Agni has total of 12 asura descriptions, Varuna has 10, Mitra has eight, and Rudra has six. Bhargava gives a count of the word usage for every Vedic deity. The Book 1 of Rig Veda describes Savitr (Vedic solar deity) as an Asura who is a "kind leader".[9]
    हिरण्यहस्तो असुरः सुनीथः सुमृळीकः स्ववाँ यात्वर्वाङ् ।
    अपसेधन्रक्षसो यातुधानानस्थाद्देवः प्रतिदोषं गृणानः ॥१०॥[10]
    May he, gold-handed Asura, kind leader, come hither to us with his help and favour.
    Driving off Raksasas and Yatudhanas, [he] the god is present, praised in hymns at evening.
    - Translated by Ralph Griffith[9]
    The golden-handed lord of good guidance, of good grace, of good help-let him drive in our direction.
    Repelling demons and sorcerers, the god has taken his place facing evening, while being hymned.
    - Translated by Stephanie W. Jamison, Joel P. Brereton[11]}}
    - Rigveda 1.35.10
    In later Vedic period, Asuras take on a negative connotation and become associated with those powerful phenomena who do not serve man (unlike Devas who exist to serve mankind). Since they are considered powerful and not inherently for the welfare of mankind, they misuse their power and are ultimately considered "adharmic" in a cosmological sense. This evolves further and they successively take on the quality of adharmic acts, as otherwise they would be Devas.
    Originally Asuras were NOT a clan. You can see clearly Varuna and other "Asuras" in the Rig Veda becomming Devas. This was a description of them being powerful, and then becoming benevolent.

      @Shrideep Paul it's like two political parties competing for the seat of swarga; for posts like Indra, Agni, Vayu etc..
      So Indra isn't a single person ; it's a title , either deva or asura can hold the posts in swargalok.
      Intresting fact is that - After the vedic tribes got split , the Indian vedic people favoured devas and asuras were associated with bad;
      whereas Iranian vedic people favoured Ahuras(asuras) and daeva( deva) were the bad people.

    I think a better translation would be Titan. A lot of Hindu myths share roots with Greco-Roman myths, and similar stories exist. Gods battle the Titans for supremacy. There are other similarities, for instance Varuna is described as an Asura in sections of the Rg Veda, while Uranus (Kronos) is his counterpart who is a Titan

    Good discussion.
    Two points worth considering.
    1. Pravritti as genetic imprint and hence the 'possiblity' of real flesh and blood bloodlines.
    2. While most devi-devata-asura 'stories' are clearly complex codes, containing the keys to understanding how this universe actually functions both at the cosmic level and at the material level, at the wave level and at the particle level. The pure experience of it or grasping it through symbolic level thinking/action is what frees one from the 'entanglements' or rather makes you aware of the nature of the 'weave''. If the relationship between the Pind and Brahmand is mathematical (or should it be vaigyanika?), from Parmatma to the paramanu there is a wave and particle continuum. So much of the seemingly symbolic is 'expression' from the vaigyanika perspective but doesn't it therefore find 'material' expression. This is tantra gyaan, no?
    Understanding or 'seeing' this fabric of Bramha's dreams unfolding as both energy/vibration patterns and as material manifestations on the lower side of the frequency.
    Once you 'see' then the question is what do you do with your will? The asuras will use this knowledge to project/impact/mess up their I/Me onto the world around in order to seek validity of their power. Out of tune (sur) in a way. Deep rooted propensity for projecting chaos and blood-shed ( literalism, muladhara-struck, with a fondness for blood come with the package) on to the world since it is a constant physical proof of this power. A mind trapped in its own play, disconnected from atma. Therefore no concern with the main game, the atma-brahma relationship. Therefore no true understanding of the cause-consequence. Therefore the permanent other, the ones they have to feed upon to survive and flourish. It is the Asura who seeking 'trans-humanism' basically 'super-human'. Or do they mean 'trance-human' and hide it? Word-play is magic when it is mind-play, both ways. The shitty part is that this is a play that is going on right now as it has been for 100s of years. Deception and prana-stealing has to be understood properly to understand what happened to the Hindus (the global spread of the tribes and not just Bharatwasis) at the psychic and the physical levels.
    The occult becomes dark when the muladhara-struck mind not only indulges in power-play through words, sounds, images...violence. But it is deadly when it multiplies itself by employing means and methods of pravritti transmission, prana-harvesting and genetic interferences.

If you folks are Vaishnavas, I understand your prejudice against Shiva, but an accurate representation of the Puranas is important and you shouldn't resort to such passive aggression. At least you show Shiva on the side of Suras, for which, I guess, Shaivites should be grateful.

    Devas are right brain, logical, systematic and universal ,masculine
    Asuras are left brain , emotional, materialistic , feminine
    Yagna is connecting our athmic energy to parabrhmam
    One way of yagna is meditation, our mind is vast as ocean like (paar Kadal), our thoughts can't stand like manthara malai, upon meditation mind gets slowed down like tortoise , and thought (manthara malai) gets seated, thoughts are churned between logical( devas and asuras)
    First we become body( maha Lakshmi or prakruthi) conscious
    Then we become kaamadenu (soul) concious
    Then we become breath concious ( sastha )
    The we become 7 chakra concious ( Saptha kanni)
    Then our kundalini raises and reaches our Shasta chakra,
    Once it opens you are enlightened ( nector) and get connected to parabrhmam.
    So asuras are emotions present in every human being
    Take mahisa asura, its dullness like buffalo (mahisaa) asura. With iccha sakthi ( will power), crea sakthi ( creativity) , gnana sakthi ( experience) we can fight over our laziness, habits etc this what the story explains
    So asuras are not some races

    Only prahalad can be stated as SURA even though Bali did yajan he was still ASUR. Because Bali wanted the whole earth for his own clan & finish all MANUSA (human being).
    Old VARN system was different, only the person who studied the ved was allowed to have his surname accordingly, his sons were not allowed to have the same last name like his father if he don’t accomplish what his father did, for this you must study the real version of MANU SMRITI

    Abrahamic god is an Asura.

  • @tersta1

    It seems with Sura being lesser known as an early identification for deva-aligned Brahmana, the meaning of Asura seems to have been lost over time. I'm thankful that you brought "Sura" to light in the context of explaining Asura. I also think it funny, but very appropriate, that you used YOLO to define the nature of Asura.
    As you explain it as those who disrupt yajna, would Visvamitra, while a kshatriya and while he practiced austerities too, have been considered an Asura, or asuric by nature? He went on to create mantras, but his penance was self-interested, as he hoped to gain power and favor to one day take vengeance against Vasistha.
    This is unrelated, but I am curious about Vedamaya nau ( वेदमय नौ ) with nau meaning boat. Nau sounds a lot like Noah, as in Noah's Ark of the Abrahamic religions and the legend of Noah matches the flood story of the Matsya Purana. I wonder if the Noah's Ark legend originated with the story of Manu and Matsya. Have you any knowledge of an etymological connection between Sanskrit nau and Hebrew Noah (נוֹחַ)? Also, what is meant by the imagery of the Vedamaya nau ( वेदमय नौ )? My curiosity grew out of a footnote in the Mahabharata stating "Vedamayi nou. Lit, a boat made of the Vedas". My best guess is that it means the Vedas provide salvation, or rescues one from being overwhelmed.
    Quoted from Wikipedia:
    Noah is a given name and surname most likely derived from the Biblical figure Noah (נוֹחַ) in Hebrew. It is most likely of Babylonian origin from the word "nukhu" meaning repose or rest, which is possible in view of the Sumerian/Babylonian source of the flood story. Another explanation says that it is derived from the Hebrew root meaning "to comfort" (nahum) with the final consonant dropped.[1]
    Sanskrit:
    नौकाf. naukā = ark [ship]

      There are multiple Flood related stories in different cultures, because there was huge sea level rise when glaciers melted 16000 years and 12000 years ago.
      So, different cultures remembered is via different oral traditions.

      It's definitely related. There were Indra worshiping Indo Aryan kingdoms in Anatolia at one point in time. The subcontinent is the most fertile region of the world. Population churn towards both west and east have happened over multiple waves definitely. The war cry of the crusaders was "Deus Vault" - Deus comes from a very ancient pre vedic language definitely as sanskrit has the worlds devas(sargun deities) and divas(day-something that shines brightly). So, do the words zeus(Deus) and Jupiter(Deus + pitr(father)) :))

    Asura literally means Anti or "opposing" Suras or Zora; in Slovene means "Light" or "Dawn", in sanskrit as Surya...so A'Surya; Asura. Later Egyptian "Asar" or "Osiris"; the origins of the Monotheism are in Asurism or Osirianism... via "Moses" and his patreon, "pharaoh" Akhenaton who revitalized this cult of Asuras...from which later derives so called Judeochristianity... which is the backbone of Abrahamic or Anti Brahmanic (Osirian) cults, which oppose Devas... Rephaim also derives from Ravana... So does Sara or SARAswati, wife of Brahma = Sara, wife of A'brahm or A'Bram (Anti Brahma)... Our slovene prechristian old believers called demons as Ašure. Those were for example manifested in old roots which were "rubbed", cut or shaped by the water or the water stream. These roots or wooden parts were generally cut through rocks which were in the stream... And people were burning "ašure". The priest called Dehnar (a local priest, highest priest was called Vedun; from "Veda"; Veda meas "knowledge in Slovene or "abstract science", "prediction") took stones which looked like snake heads and blessed it and it became some kind of a shrine... they generally put crystals or glass into sockets which looked like eyes on stones...
