    Absolutely fascinating, this story and their accomplishments through their 2-year experiment.

    10:52 man i could just tell this was true before i ever heard anyone else mention it. i can tell we're being deprived of such a connection with the earth and nature, and it makes me so so sad.

    What was great about the project was the lessons learned. What was bad was the ignorance of the media to focus on the process of learning as a failure. They may be great at law and linguistics but seem to be pretty ignorant about science but get in front of the camera with their commentaries and speak as if they were experts. They missed all the values and implications of what a successful project could mean to creating environments off world as well as what it could mean improving environments in Biosphere 1. Now that we are seriously getting closer to outposts on the Moon and Mars, it is my hope that we will soon see more emphasis on this kind of studies. After all, if we can't do it here, how will we do it there?

    @9:55 that doesn't seem right. It's oxygen levels in the cortex and medullary kidney that cause EPO levels to fluctuate, and EPO stimulates blood cell production. Plenty of athletes have used oxygen deprivation tents to drive up epo levels before they go on mountain expeditions at sea level pressures. I might believe that their protein calorie malnutrition prevented them from making new RBCs though.

      thanks for your note. will see if there was any further study done on that aspect.

    They didn't take into account that plants breathe in Oxygen at night, not common knowledge. Keep it mind indoor growers. No joke.

      most biologist know that, it is the concrete using up a lot of o2 and making tons of co2 wich was a huge problem. the building was made with way to much concrete.

      At night aerobic respiration is the dominant process in plants; C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy. The opposite of photosynthesis(in presence of light); 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy = C6H12O6 + 6O2.

      Of course they did; what they hadn't calculated for what the intake of oxygen by the joints that were holding the glass panels together ... so much was happening inside there ....

      There was also soil brought in with life in it, that was much too active.

      The concrete was new and not cured. Curing concrete contributed to the increased Co2

    a good self-sustaining system. it had shown the change of food, gases... the next step, to cut down the energy supply to see what else need to be enhanced

      Really guys, that's all you have to say of a work of that magnitude ? You know that this experiment contributed a lot about our understanding of the Carbon cycle for example (inside BIO2 : 4 days while in the biosphere 1 it is of 3-4 years)? You are probably not scientists or you'd know that experiments of such scale are decade-long enterprises.... Americans should be proud to have such a structure on their grounds ...

    • @mustdieproductions
      @mustdieproductions 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@flokt1 Of course we acknowledge the objective data that was retreived during the experiment; It's conclusive. But there's more to the data than just the hard facts that were uncovered from the environment alone. We uncovered something important about us that relates to our required ability to survive within an artificial environment that's limited by design in a hostile environment that engulfs that apparatus we rely on. It shows us that the proper delegation of power and the cooperation of every individual/assigned group involved is crucial for the survival of the ecosystem.
      But I tend to take the analysis of the experiment subjects and their failure to cooperate with a grain of salt. Because they, the subjects, inheritly knew that there was civilization that they were very familiar with, shared compatibility with their resources and had immediate contact to, they were presented with the potential to break the rules for their own individual gain. Nothing hurt this experiment more than the area it was hosted upon. They knew that failure of the experiment had no fatal consequences to their lives because they could easily return to their families and their comfortable lives at home.
      Now, had the biosphere been assembled in the furthest reaches of Antartica or the most isolated outback deserts of Australia with experiment subjects being selected with one important criteria being based on their lack of knowledge of the immediate area outside the sphere, I believe the experiment would have turned out much more differently.
