I think the pumpkin had the advantage. I've seen pumpkins decompose without worms, so this video is nothing more than just watching a pumpkin decay over 60 days.
One of the very few things I did do - which was just out of view of the camera - is poke a couple vent holes into the back. It was becoming so smelly that I just wanted it to be eaten & dried up already.. I somehow thought that making a few punctures around back might help get it through its stinky phase more quickly. Haha The piercings were made on day-13 & a small flap from one of the piercings comes into view a week later on day-20 I also periodically (likewise, out of view of the camera) poked my fingertip gently down into the material to ensure that it wasn't drying out. To my surprise, the material retained its moisture just fine the entire time Thank you for watching! ..oh, and thanks for recognizing the immense willpower it took to keep my grubby hands out of the bin ;)

Great vid! I fed the smallest jack o lantern pumpkin to my worm bin when I started it a couple of weeks ago and every seed germinated. I pulled up the sprouts and put them in the feed zone.
I had a small pumpkin too that I threw into one of my really active bins. A few weeks ago I had a number of sprouts that popped out & they too became worm food. In hindsight... I wonder how this video would have turned out if I had not removed the seeds from the pumpkin.
Actually.. I have a cantaloupe melon in the freezer which might be the subject on a similar upcoming time-lapse. The next one though must have some tweaks to improve the result.. such as: a) do the time-lapse in the dark using a flash camera, and b) enclose the environment to boost the ambient moisture levels throughout (ideally resulting in the worms making more appearances out in the open). Thanks for watching!

This was a great video. I went over to a guys house once to get some rabbit manure. Under his cages were piles of manure and around the edges there were earth worms right under the soil. I think I got as many worms as I did rabbit manure. That was a great trip and my gardens really benefited 2 ways.

I had a Jack o lantern i use to shoot at after Halloween with my bbgun. It was fun to watch it slowly disappear and the winter went on. Only thing left was the stem. Lifted it up and the little eco system between it and the soil was so interesting to see but i knew i messed up exposing it to fresh air. Saw yesterday and its just dry dirt with no bugs or mycelium.
The pumpkin started drooping very quickly. Was the pumpkin in this time lapse (from five years ago) frozen at all before beginning this process and do you have any other time lapse videos in in the works?
The pumpkin wasn't frozen... it was hollowed out through a hole on the bottom, loaded with worms then capped off with bedding prior to being placed into the bin At the moment there are no new time-lapse videos in progress - but I should really get something going one of these days :)
What I thought was the most interesting was how lively the other surface matter is as the worms come to surface and shift things around ever so slightly. You don't notice it in normal speed. So that was really interesting to me.

Worms could be exiting the material and climbing the walls of your bin if you use a lid and condensation collects on the inner surfaces... attracting the worms. Or maybe you have a type of worm that is more prone to exploring - luckily, I have red wigglers that like to stay put in their bins. There's also the possibility that something is happening within your bin that's driving them away - such as the environment having pH levels that make the worms uncomfortable... or perhaps excessively dry materials in the bin... or maybe some material you place in the bin are reacting to each other and heating up. In the case of this time-lapse there were also lamps continuously illuminating the scene - which, in itself, would contribute to keeping the worms from wanting to breach the surface. Thanks for watching!
Imagine if one day the ground moves at this time frame but everything else is normal and any moment you could be hounded of your flesh by supersonic worms?... Just me then OK.

It would certainly be nice to see this video get as many, or more, views as my most viewed time-lapse of the layered worm bin from last year. Only time will tell. Keepin' my fingers crossed...
Tomorrow will be the 1-year anniversary on me posting my most popular video(s). Besides the version that has 38k views, there's also the 'extended version' that is now at 33k views. In a way I see that as one grand total on over 70k for my original layered worm bin time-lapse. I wonder if this video will be as successful a year from now...
The camera snapped a photo once every minute. 1440 images daily - nearly 94k pix in total. Seeing it all played back at 30 frames per second is possible in the hour-long 'ALL FRAMES' version (what you watched is the 'FAST' version). I invite you to check it out here: th-cam.com/video/p9NYqc1edv8/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching!

I’m impressed I once bought a pumpkin for Halloween that I was too lazy to cut so I just put it out there. Damn thing nearly lasted Till the next Halloween!!
Did the same a few years back. One day I smelled something on the patio. Next day too, and it was worse. Realized that pumpkin I had gotten nearly 9 months prior had liquified from inside out and was full of maggots. I have an almost iron stomache, but this had me holding my breath and dry heaving between. It was awful.
They are those "bus bins", also known as "bus boxes", used by the bus boys when they come to clear the tables at the restaurant. I have some of the more shallow kind and I have a few of the deeper kind too. I think the deeper kind is best suited for vermicomposting. Thanks for watching!
It could have something to do with the continuously lit lights overhead. It might also be because they can sense that it is dry outside of the bin so they remain inside. The only time I ever see any of my worms wander out of the material is when I use covers on the bin causing condensation on the inner walls and on the lid of the container which seems to draw them out of the material. Thanks for watching!

Sounds like an interesting movie concept (where the human species is extinct at the end of course)
@@azlizzie and in the end, all that's alive is a writhing perfectly spherical mass of super speed bacteria and bugs that coat the entire planet. All mountains carved flat and all canyons filled with waste.
@@MichaelHenderson59 you might enjoy learning about the theory of crater earth. it's quite an interesting theory about earth actually being inside a crater and the way out of the crater and onto the larger area that surrounds the crater is in Antarctica. Yep, it's quite a fascinating story that includes suspense, thrills, chills...you know, all the stuff people love to watch in movies. Yep.
😳😳🤮
Sounds like a cool SCP. Time stop worms. Or Lightspeed worms.
My heart rate and blood pressure lowers watching this 😌
"I Got Worms". Thats what you should name your channel🌶🍔🌶
I know - I know. My channel is just my initials and more-or-less meaningless. Some day I have to come up with a better channel name.. "I Got Worms" is interesting - but also could be misinterpreted as me having some sort of parasitic infestation. Haha.. Thanks for watching!
Dumb and Dumber reference !
BAM!!
I see now. I had to look that one up - haha! Thanks for watching
@@A-V yeah, it's a somewhat funny line from that movie😁
Are you the gas man?
Cool. Well made vid. When the seeds hatched, they got those too!
Basically a video of my bank account over a weekend
Watched again today. Still fantastic!!!!!!
This is incredible. Been watching all your videos and this is by far the coolest!
Thank you for your comment - I'm glad you enjoyed the time-lapse.. and thank you for watching my channel!
I bet this smelled WONDERFUL
There were a few days when the smell was horrible.. and luckily it went away within a couple days. Thanks for watching!
Just wondering how you did this without getting flies? In Australia it would be hard to not get maggots but would love to try this
To be honest I sorta expected to get some sort of pests while making this but maybe because it was winter I did not - luckily. Perhaps also because it was done in my basement - as opposed to outdoors where more bugs probably would've been attracted to it. Thanks for watching!
Nice timelapse
Your name made me curious so I popped over to your channel. Your salad animation is great. Thanks for watching my video!
WOW!
The ground is alive! Totally cool how some of the leafs moved towards the pumpkin.
Great production...the whole thing.
I predict this may be your highest viewed video...educational and all.
I read you comments on a possible next endeavor with flash for worm effect...that would sure be a hit.
Thanks.
It would certainly be nice to see this video get as many, or more, views as my most viewed time-lapse of the layered worm bin from last year. Only time will tell. Keepin' my fingers crossed...
@@A-V 1.3k in 1 day not bad....now to get to 38k.
I'll be back.
How often does your time lapse take a picture?
The camera snapped a photo once every minute. 1440 images daily - nearly 94k pix in total. Seeing it all played back at 30 frames per second is possible in the hour-long 'ALL FRAMES' version (what you watched is the 'FAST' version). I invite you to check it out here: th-cam.com/video/p9NYqc1edv8/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching!
Hey my friend wants to know if this will work on a body, like ahhh he just wants to know.
😍 that's beautiful soil in the making
That was terrifying and fantastically cool at the same time!
I like watching these videos... Just glad that I can't smell these videos!!
Indeed - for a few days there I was on the verge of taking outside & chucking it in the trash... but then luckily the stink subsided :) Thanks for watching!
Great. Now you have compost and worm castings for your garden.
This is really beautiful
Healthy soil! My plants are love this soil a lot!
How big of a plastic bin did you use? Like, the size of it? Great video!
They are those "bus bins", also known as "bus boxes", used by the bus boys when they come to clear the tables at the restaurant. I have some of the more shallow kind and I have a few of the deeper kind too. I think the deeper kind is best suited for vermicomposting. Thanks for watching!
How many worms did you start with here? Thanks
And eventually, just like me, you'll find this video in your recommended
Exactly.
How do you keep your worms from escaping?????!!!!!
Must have made some great soil.
How come the dry leaves last longer than the pumpkin,
My guess is that it is the dryness itself that causes that :)
Amazing time lapse man!
Thanks dude!
