So glad you reacted to him! If TH-cam lets me comment I'll explain the meaning behind all of that if you want to know: (even If this gets posted I may not be able to reply to you if you see my comment, they have been deleting my comments) Ian is making a storyline based on his life dealing with bipolar disorder type I and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). There are three main "characters" in this storyline: Mito, Mr Insanity and The Hybrid. His first two albums focused on Mito while his most recent one 'Dear Insanity' focused on Mr Insanity and that's why they're so distinct. I’ll only talk about Mito and Mr Insanity here since they are the ones present in the videos you've watched. These aren't just characters, they are real people that have a mind of their own called "alters" (short for alternate state of consciousness) and that he coexists with. DID. In DID there's more than one person living in the same body with different memories, voice tone, body language, beliefs, motives, etc. DID stems from severe and/or repeated early childhood trauma (typically before 5 to 10 years old) and the child fragments the mind so the "new person" can deal with the trauma and not the child otherwise it would be unbearable. That person was Mito. That way the child's mind can't fully integrate into one whole identity and instead it becomes multiple. Just like fragments of a mirror, they all work seperately but together they form the whole mirror (a 'system' how someone with DID can be called). The physical version of his first EP had a broken mirror inside the case. Someone with DID only knows this mechanism to cope with trauma: to disassociate and become someone else. So they unconsciously switch between identities as they are exposed to stress and also more identities can be formed throughout their lives. Mito (the acronym for Moodswings In This Order) is the "protector alter" since he was created by the mind to deal with any trauma and to be the one who remembers them so Ian can forget it. Mito is is represented in MVs by wearing black, with a deep voice, missing an eye because of white contact lenses and wearing a ring with an eyeball. The association of Mito with an eye is due to the fact that the ‘eye’ symbolism is important to him because him as a visual director recognizes that the best lenses of the world are the eyes. So when he switches into Mito and his world flips, it’s like he loses one eye. He also has trouble looking at himself properly in the mirror, he always closes one eye, which probably also inspired this notion. That's because due to the multiple identities he has a hard time processing who he is. Ian is the prominent identity, the one who stays the longest in the body (called the "host"). In very stressful situations Ian blacks out and Mito takes control of the mind in order to protect him (he's the one "fronting" ps. there's also cofronting meaning more than one alter in control at the same time.) Ian then will come back hours, days, weeks later (the longest that it has been was a month) not remembering anything that was said or done. Basically his life has been lived and he doesn't know how. Ian calls the place where the whole story unfold "The Other Side" which is actually his consciousness, where these alters exist. Continues...
*'So Beautiful'* The intro: “Before I change again (before he switches to Mito again) Remind me of the times when I still remembered. (Talking about the memory gaps. How once he comes back to the body he needs to figure out all that was said and done by Mito) The black and white scenes are all Mito. It was the first time that he switched on camera. Ian had a black out and when he came back he asked "When are the cameras going to start rolling?" and the camera operator answered "We have already done 3 takes of it". Ian has no recollection of filming these scenes. He said it was hard to edit these scenes and see Mito for the first time. There were some scenes that he couldn't leave in. The MV feels like a werewolf transformation. 'Wolves' are mentioned a lot in this lyrics, they are a huge symbolism for him because of the werewolf transformation aspect that represents his DID switches. In his instagram he puts an emoticon of a full moon, black moon, or half, on his bio to inform fans about his state of mind at the moment. If it's Mr Insanity, Mito or Ian 'fronting' the most. He also deactivates his instagram if he feels that Ian is going to be completely gone from the body in order to avoid his alters posting something compromising. Also, he said when he's manic he has a lot of auditory hallucination of whistles, that's probably why they are incorporated in some of his songs, like this one and 'Don't Go Insane'. *'Nerves'* This song is clearly about heartbreak and the lyrics are self explanatory but notice here how he talks in third person a few times throughout the song and at the end he says “I loved you, he loved you” and it cuts to a black and white scene with him with only one eye, so Mito. Implying that they both her but it’s unclear who she loved. *'No Blueberries'* Ian said that this song is about people you don't associate yourself with. That you're not very familiar with and no matter what you do you just can't connect with them. He associated that with blueberries. One of the lyrics also says "Welcome To The Other Side" alluding to the story. Now we get to the Dear Insanity EP and we get to take about another alter: Mr Insanity. This album is all about how Mr Insanity came to be and his journey into 'The Other Side'. The MVs for this album era are all connected. He released the videos in reverse, except for Peanut Butter & Tears. Storyline wise it is: Peanut Butter & Tears ==> Don't Go Insane ==> Don't Go Insane teaser ==> So I Danced *'Peanut Butter & Tears'* Ian said that since childhood he usually lucid dreams and in these dreams there are a lot of doors. Going through the wrong door would turn it into a nightmare. In this song Ian starts lucid dreaming and wandering through these 'doors'. The first door that he enters he is met by a whole new world he never knew that existed: ‘The Other Side’. The only way to go into The Other Side (his consciousness) is through lucid dreaming. He tries to understand where he's at until he realizes he can't leave or he doesn't know how to get back. Essentially the longer he stays lucid dreaming, the longer he ventures into this world, he starts to lose the grip of reality, he goes manic and turns into Mr Insanity. This video is he beginning stages of Mr Insanity, his manic highs. He is represented in MVs by wearing colorful attire, clowny make up and butterfly is his symbol. Since in mania someone with bipolar gets extremely high and reckless, Mr Insanity is usually chaotic and thinks he's unstoppable. The green asteroid seen on the video at the beginning was a huge part of his dreams when he was a child. While wandering through these doors, somewhere down this mind, Ian/Mr Insanity goes through another door and comes across his youth or memories unlocking his youth, one of them being "Peanut Butter & Jelly". However when he comes across it this time it’s "Peanut Butter & Tears'. It’s a ‘sad freak show’. This song is about the childhood trauma behind the door (represented here by a visit to the dentist), how it shapes you and losing the joy in life as the years go by. But he also said that there's still joy in life even after you’ve grown up. You just need to know where to look for it. In the next chapters of the story there's a specific door that Mr Insanity's chaotic self is trying to open which represents the traumas. Mito being the protector won't let this happen since Ian isn't supposed to know anything about it. *'Don't Go Insane'* At the beginning of the video, Ian is sitting at the desk writing a letter for his future self, Mr Insanity. While Ian is sitting, there's also a howl and he mentions 'wolves' at the lyrics ("Oh, bless my heart / When the wolves take me away"). Remember about the werewolf aspect I mentioned earlier. At this point, after 'Peanut Butter & Tears', Mr Insanity was already born but he isn't his highest version yet. In ‘Don’t Go Insane’ we see Mr Insanity develop. We see his journey venturing into "The Other Side" as he slowly turns into madness going after the key that unlocks another door/trauma During this journey Mr Insanity is met by pink villagers which are essentially Mito's minions trying to stop him (notice how they only have one eye like Mito) and Mito is represented by the black smoke. Mr Insanity repeatedly says to himself "I'm sane" and even so still loses grip on reality. 'Don't Go Insane', as the title suggests, is about trying to not go insane while simultaneously still losing your mind. Ian said in the story the most advanced version of Mr Insanity, when he succumbs to madness, is completely blind because he no longer needs to see since the universe is within himself. He has fallen to 'The Other Side'. In my interpretation this is probably why at the end of the song right before the bridge he says "Can't see...". About The Green guy, It isn't known yet his role in all that, just that he is Mr Insanity's sidekick. *'So I Danced'* Mr Insanity (the blonde Joker looking one), together with The Green, plans a heist to steal the key from the "Bank of the Other Side" which is located at the Emerald City. The name is inspired by the Wizard of Oz, a big reference for him since childhood and he actually visited his version of the 'Emerald City" in one of his dreams. However the guardian/mayor of the city is Mito himself and then the battle between Mito and Mr Insanity unfolds. It is unclear who won. Hopefully with this you could understand everything better! I recommend for you to watch the Miito Movie (Seraph+1Shot+Mood+Ribbon), it's a medley of 4 songs with incredible cinematography, Limbo (the intro for another character called The Hybrid. He's going to release an EP focused on The Hybrid in 1-2 months) and 'Skins Demo', I'll give you context for this last one since with him context is everything: It contains Mito's thoughts about holding their traumas for so long. It's basically a letter from Mito to Ian. Ian came back after a 2-day black out and found the song written and produced, the video already done all by Mito. It is the first time that Ian allowed himself to show to the world Mito's true feelings and not just how Mito is through Ian's eyes: usually shown as a dark almost mythical/villainous figure that Ian repels and can't accept that he's a part of himself. This is probably because in DID protectors (Mito) can also punish the hosts (Ian). In real life Ian until now doesn't know what trauma is the root of his DID, only Mito does. Mito in order to protect Ian usually punishes him if he ever goes looking to know what is this trauma. 'Skins' in a way feels like the humanization of a "villain" by giving him a voice. Ian choosing to release a 100% Mito creation instead of burying it was an important step towards their relationship and acceptance as a whole system. Don't know if you're aware but besides writing and producing his songs he also directs and edits his own videos. Also plays bass, keyboard and the drums plus he dances as you can see. The man can do anything lol And I think it was funny how you said how it feels like there's two people singing. I know you didn't mean like that but so fitting! Mito also can hit an octave that Ian can't.
@@squirrelsanityWow....I knew about Mito but not about all this other stuff. Thank you so much for all this info. It is so interesting. I always wanted to know more but didn't know where to start.

@squirrel7303 Today is August 31st 2024. Why do you never appear in comments section again? Where are you? Has TH-cam deleted your account again? Are you using a new account now? I hope you are healthy and well. I want to read your description of DPR Ian at comments section again. I really miss you.
I literally gasped when I heard you say that they'd told you watching the MV is optional. He's a filmmaker, the MVs are absolutely essential! So excited for you to get into him, thank you for your reactions!
I like to think of him as the goth theater kid of kpop, which is extremely high praise coming from me lol. He's a really fascinating dude tho and a super multi-hypenate artist who can sing, dance, write, compose, produce, edit, direct, and probably about a million other things. I think he's actually directed and edited mvs for other artists too. A lot of his work is themed around struggles with mental illness, particularly his diagnoses of bipolar and dissociative identity disorder (DID, formerly known as multiple personality disorder).
23:36 "I coud actually convince myself it's two different people singing" Ian has DID (and bipolar) so this is pretty spot on !! MITO, one of his alters, (the protector) doesn't have the same vocal range as Ian for example :))
Long comment incoming with important info etc ❤.. Dpr Ian aka Christian Yu is a Korean-Australian singer, musician, editor, director etc He is an incredible artist who makes all of his music and music videos! He edits them all!❤ he’s really one of a kind. Ian has Bipolar and DID (dissociative identity disorder). His music and videos explore those subjects, they also include his “alters”. “Alters” are basically other personalities that live in one person (they have different memories, attitudes, habits, tones etc). Ian blacks out when he switches. The alters he has included in his work so far are: MITO He takes over during Ian’s manic lows. He is destructive but also Ian’s protector. He holds Ian’s trauma and keeps it all locked away. In music videos he can be seen wearing dark clothes, an eye ring on his finger, he has one white eye, and his voice is made very deep. Mito recorded the song Skins and also shot the mv. Ian has no memory making it but posted it. It’s very raw❤ MR INSANITY he takes over during Ian’s manic highs. He is very chaotic and lacks care for his own safety. Mito hates him bc of those things. He can be seen in music videos with blonde hair, clown-like makeup, fireflies surrounding him, his eyes sometimes flash pink and green. THE HYBRID it is a combination of the worst parts of Mito and Mr Insanity. Ian has called it an “abomination” and “entity”. The hybrid does have a name but Ian has said on his live that only about 6 people in his life know it. He might share the name soon as his upcoming album is mainly focused on The Hybrid. It’s appearance in music videos is a mix of Mito and Mr Insanity. Basically the Limbo mv look. I have some requests: DPR IAN - LIMBO MV DPR IAN - SKINS (demo) MV DPR IAN - SERAPH | 1 SHOT | MOOD | RIBBON | OFFICIAL MIITO MOVIE (PART I) DPR IAN - SCAREDY CAT MV
I get why you are so confused but once u actually realize whats all of these videos about youll be blown away this man is a genius never seen sm so good at visualizing so much emotions this good. Ian has a whole lore and its actually based on his mental issues (he has bi polar & D.I.D )he use art to express his feelings and what he goes through in real life he also produce, write, edit and directs all his projects of course he has a team to help him with but it doesnt change the fact that his artistry is so personal and he's so involved in every part of making it .hes also such a geniune nice person who doesn't shy away from being vulnarable and i find it so impressive. his discography is a no skip for me the production is always to tier u wont regret listening to his albums.
I'm so excited to watch this! I haven't watched the whole thing yet but I wanted to leave this comment already, DPR Ian uses his music to talk about his Bipolar Disorder and also DID, the music videos are a story surrounding his mental health and they do have a specific order! I would highly recommend checking out his interview on the Zach Sang Show to learn more about him! Edit: He also directs AND edits his videos himself!
Yay this was so fun and u really got a variety of his mvs and songs! Im not gonna repeat whats already been said, but yes his bipolar and DID are vital in understanding his story and mvs. He does it all, writes, directs, and even edits these crazy mvs. He really puts his whole heart and soul into them in order for us to better understand his world and there is a storyline thay connects them all. I really cannot out into words what a creative genius is! And to answer if he is kpop, no. But he is often grouped into it because he used to he in a kpop group. He and a few friends created their own independent label called DPR (dream perfect regime) The reason why u see such a stark difference in style from something like nerves to Peanut Butter and tears is because u are see Mr insanity compared to mito. Alsooo i thought is was cool u mentioned u thiught u could hear two voices in i think, ballroom extravanza because ian often uses a very deep voice in his songs to represent mitos voice. I would love to see more ian on ur channel!!!
It is called khh (Korean hip hop), some consider it to be a branch of Kpop, others consider it to be completely different. Ian was part of a kpop group in the past, but now he is a soloist khh. ❤
I saw DPR in concert without really knowing them (a friend had a spare ticket) and it was amazing. I really love Scaredy Cat If you watch So I danced, Peanut Butter and Tears and Don't Go Insane together it... makes a little more sense?
His tattoos are very real haha! Sometimes he adds some fake ones and I'm sure he's gotten more since So Beautiful but the ones in the So Beautiful MV are mostly his real ones. I also really recommend LIMBO!
DPR Ian has two creations, Mr Insanity and MITO (Moodswings In This Order). Mr Insanity can be recognized as the colorful guy with big eyes. MITO can be recognized by colorless black white, missing one pupil and wearing a ring with eyeball on his finger.
Sorry in advance if I'd make some mistakes, English is not my first language. I love seeing other people reactions when they see Ian's work for the first time. He was an idol back in the days that's why he might be listed on some kpop websites but his current music is (as he said himself) not a specific genre it's more like his feelings and his story in a shape of art. Ian also makes al the mv's himself so visuals does matter in this case. Ian is suffering from bipolar disorder and has been recently diagnosed with DID. He's basically trying to tell the world about his battle with all of this through his music. The identities that have been introduced to us so far is Mito (black, white and red are his colors), Mr.Insanity (vibrant colors) and Hybrid (we've only seen him once in limbo, I believe he's been created by the system not so long ago). Also the white eye that scared you is a way to show that the character you see on the screen is Mito and not Ian himself. Hope that helps with understanding Christian a little more. I'm so glad you liked his work. Ian is so talented and he deserves a lot of appreciation
I forgot to mention that his voice may seem different because of did as well. He once said that he's insecure about his own vocals compared to Mito. According to Ian he can't hit the higher notes that Mito can do easily
Loved your reaction! Dpr Ian is so talented, I love him so much! Also I feel like before reacting to dpr ian if people suggest him they should also give some background info so that the person can understand at least a little bit!
Going into this with 0 context is kind of "Insane" (No pun intended lol). Definitly hope you react to more of his music especially once you know more about him and the art he creates and why!!!
Hey love this video and love dpr ian so much he’s so good. I’ve just watched the latest 5 mvs he’s done as well, they’re so good. You did I think three of them in this video I believe, awesome. I have a question as well, can you please tell me what you use to screen record your videos I’ve always wondered how to do this i haven’t found anything that lets me do it yet ?

Continues...
*'So Beautiful'*
The intro:
“Before I change again
(before he switches to Mito again)
Remind me of the times when I still remembered.
(Talking about the memory gaps. How once he comes back to the body he needs to figure out all that was said and done by Mito)
The black and white scenes are all Mito. It was the first time that he switched on camera. *'Nerves'*
This song is clearly about heartbreak and the lyrics are self explanatory but notice here how he talks in third person a few times throughout the song and at the end he says “I loved you, he loved you” and it cuts to a black and white scene with him with only one eye, so Mito. *'No Blueberries'*
Ian said that this song is about people you don't associate yourself with.
Storyline wise it is:
Peanut Butter & Tears ==> Don't Go Insane ==> Don't Go Insane teaser ==> So I Danced
*'Peanut Butter & Tears'*
Ian said that since childhood he usually lucid dreams and in these dreams there are a lot of doors. Going through the wrong door would turn it into a nightmare. In this song Ian starts lucid dreaming and wandering through these 'doors'. The first door that he enters he is met by a whole new world he never knew that existed: ‘The Other Side’.
*'Don't Go Insane'*
At the beginning of the video, Ian is sitting at the desk writing a letter for his future self, Mr Insanity.
We see his journey venturing into "The Other Side" as he slowly turns into madness going after the key that unlocks another door/trauma
During this journey Mr Insanity is met by pink villagers which are essentially Mito's minions trying to stop him (notice how they only have one eye like Mito) and Mito is represented by the black smoke. Mr Insanity repeatedly says to himself "I'm sane" and even so still loses grip on reality. Ian said in the story the most advanced version of Mr Insanity, when he succumbs to madness, is completely blind because he no longer needs to see since the universe is within himself. About The Green guy, It isn't known yet his role in all that, just that he is Mr Insanity's sidekick.
*'So I Danced'*
Mr Insanity (the blonde Joker looking one), together with The Green, plans a heist to steal the key from the "Bank of the Other Side" which is located at the Emerald City.
He's going to release an EP focused on The Hybrid in 1-2 months) and 'Skins Demo', I'll give you context for this last one since with him context is everything:
It contains Mito's thoughts about holding their traumas for so long. It's basically a letter from Mito to Ian. Ian has Bipolar and DID (dissociative identity disorder). His music and videos explore those subjects, they also include his “alters”. “Alters” are basically other personalities that live in one person (they have different memories, attitudes, habits, tones etc). Ian blacks out when he switches.
The alters he has included in his work so far are:
MITO
He takes over during Ian’s manic lows.
It’s very raw❤
MR INSANITY
he takes over during Ian’s manic highs. He is very chaotic and lacks care for his own safety. Mito hates him bc of those things.
He can be seen in music videos with blonde hair, clown-like makeup, fireflies surrounding him, his eyes sometimes flash pink and green.
THE HYBRID
it is a combination of the worst parts of Mito and Mr Insanity.
I have some requests:
DPR IAN - LIMBO MV
DPR IAN - SKINS (demo) MV
DPR IAN - SERAPH | 1 SHOT | MOOD | RIBBON | OFFICIAL MIITO MOVIE (PART I)
DPR IAN - SCAREDY CAT MV
Thank you for this, I didn't know any of it and it's really helpful to know! ❤
He and a few friends created their own independent label called DPR (dream perfect regime)
The reason why u see such a stark difference in style from something like nerves to Peanut Butter and tears is because u are see Mr insanity compared to mito.
but he doesn't make hip hop music😭
isn't it more alternative?
He would fit more in Krnb
I really do recommend his ‘MITO MOVIE PART1’ (4 songs in 1 storyline, 7 min). Thanks for sharing ❤
I saw DPR in concert without really knowing them (a friend had a spare ticket) and it was amazing. I really love Scaredy Cat
If you watch So I danced, Peanut Butter and Tears and Don't Go Insane together it... makes a little more sense?
The way you went im not going to watch the whole thing then proceeded to watch the whole thing LMAOO
I am nothing if not completely lacking in willpower and very easily distracted 😂
Loved your reaction! Dpr Ian is so talented, I love him so much! Also I feel like before reacting to dpr ian if people suggest him they should also give some background info so that the person can understand at least a little bit!
he came up as kpop and then did his own thing
Going into this with 0 context is kind of "Insane" (No pun intended lol). Definitly hope you react to more of his music especially once you know more about him and the art he creates and why!!!
I hope you react to the Miito movie!! Its a music video techniqally but it includes snippets of multiple songs on the album
i rlly liked wathcing these with you, you're cool!! hope you're taking care and staying hydrated

Nerves is by break up song. But it only works if your ex was hot enough.
