  • Culturedog Sam Hatch is back with a quick video that bites into the key differences between the domestic U.S. LaserDisc releases of the seminal 1987 Joel Schumacher "MTV vampires" film The Lost Boys.
    Some variants are fetching high prices on the open market, leaving many LD collectors confused, and in some cases, outraged. Why exactly are some versions more sought after than others, and how can you easily tell them apart?
    Grab some noodles and rice and chug some ominous red liquid while Sam digs into this undead format mystery!

    The dog has risen from the laser dead and entered via the open hatch to drop a video that also is a good run through of Warner LD issue practices for non boxsets that saw several reissues.
    This really hits all the Warner iterations: pan and scan and then first widescreen both with and without silver bars and then a late release remaster with ac3.
    I know the ac3 is limited due to low quantities made but people pay stupid money for it at times.

    Very interesting. Warners rarely seemed to do many re-issues for AC-3 Dolby Digital, unlike some of other studios, at least according to LDDb. Big Warner Bros movies like Lethal Weapon, Superman, & The Fugitive have no documented AC-3 reissues. I'm always thinking in the back of my head that there's a possibility that LDDb likely doesn't have every major release documented. Always a sliver of a chance something exists that's not on there.

    • @Culturedog
      @Culturedog  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, they seemed to put out AC-3 reissues of random catalog titles in small pressing quantities. Japan did get an AC-3 box set with uncut versions of the first 3 Lethal Weapons, but it's another fairly pricy later release.
      It's definitely interesting to find out how many discs are still missing from LDDb. Not so much for U.S. discs, but there's a ton of Southeast Asia releases that keep getting discovered.

    • @Culturedog
      @Culturedog  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Don't think so, it's just a curiosity within the format itself. Combined with low print runs and late release clout, supplies slowly outgrew the demand. It is wild that many hot sought after discs are essentially the LD counterparts to old snapper case DVD releaes.

      @@Culturedog there were some ac-3 and DTS fanatics, but special equipment was needed to access the tracks. Some DTS tracks haven't resurfaced on DVD/Blu/UHD, that I get, but just collecting because it's a smaller print run? In the '90s laserdisc was about the highest picture and sound quality. @@Jay828__ this one's a perfect storm of an updated/upgraded video transfer, a unique (within the format) audio feature, scarcity, and the popularity of the film.
