    After puncturing an inflatable mattress while desert camping, I decided to go back to my Z-lite. I agree with you, closed cell foam pads like these (Thermarest Z-lite, Alps Wilderness, Nemo Switchback) are the best pads for backpacking/camping. I would recommend not cutting your pad, however. On very cold ground, you will want the insulation for your feet and calves.

    • @settohike
      @settohike  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You wouldn't of had a very comfy sleep the day you punctured your mattress! I am happy to report I have not cut my pad haha. Thanks for watching 🙂

    I bought this last year because of all the positive reviews, and I must say, this pad isn't for me. I'm a larger fella and felt like there just wasn't enough cushion, for being a side sleeper. It ended up going to my nephew for boy scouts. Thermarest Neoair x-therm, ended up being my true love! :)

    Great review. I feel most of the mat reviews I have watched up until now were by older, heavier male reviewers perhaps with a bigger budget for expensive inflatable mats plus replacing them when they pop! Your review provides a welcome balance to all of that.

    Great review :). My late grandfather had one of these so I was thinking to myself “hey, let’s give it a shot”, but all I could find were reviews about how uncomfortable they are. It’s nice to have found someone who agrees with the old legend! I’m going to try it out - I nap on the floor at home sometimes with my dog so I think this will do fine :). Thanks again!

    Everyone is really into air mattresses now, but when I read the reviews on Amazon, there are always 2 or 3 that talk about air leaks they can't find. The furthest I would go is get a light one to put on top of it. Haven't done it yet. I have a dog with sharp claws.

  • @PillowStuffin
    @PillowStuffin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I dont have the thermarest one, but I got pretty much the same thing, just ozark trail brand. After constant patching and still having my pad deflate I said screw it and tossed the air(less) pad and picked up closed cell foam... first week was bad sleep but once I adjusted to the change I never looked back.

    Pack size could be important if you are trying to get your rucksack on a plane as hand luggage, without paying the extra luggage charge :-). Air mattresses pack down to nothing, but personally, I don't like them as have had two get punctures when out camping - a real pain. Useful review. Thanks.

  • @reconnaissance7372
    @reconnaissance7372 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You are very cute lol. Great review. I love the durability factor most about these but exactly like you said, they're arguably bulky.
    I honestly prefer to pack as light as I can because I have a bad back and am starting to think maybe a repair kit and a deflatable compressible mattress might suit me more. But I also think it'll basically bite me in the ass when my mattress deflates on me and I get uncomfortable, then upset. I had also planned on cutting one of these down to suit my Mont Hibernator Bivy if I did get one. But still the bulk factor kills me. Yeah the more I think of it the more I think of a Thermorest X-Lite which has an R-value of 4.2. It's just the x-lite is so expensive, and supposedly one of the highest quality air mattresses you can get, but still I've heard in reviews that they can leak pretty much brand new out of the box. It's also for military service so the puncture/repair kit factor is pretty important considering it's expectedly going to have to stand up to a drenched damp cold trench. But that's likely for only a short part of the season. I was going to get the Neo Air X-Therm but I think that's more for literal mountaineering. Sorry for the essay lol I'm just trying to weigh my options by typing it out.

    • @settohike
      @settohike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a tough one! Much easier if you could borrow one for a night to find out! In non hiking life I tend to like harder mattresses than softer. I also tend to roll around a lot so I don’t notice the ground on any particular side during the night. I would imagine an air mattress to be more comfy if you compared the two but depends on how much comfort is good enough. Not sure if those points help haha

    I’ve got my zlite can’t wait to use it all n the west highland way in a couple of weeks. I bought a roll mat to go under it but I think judging by what I’ve read online I might not need that as the zlite might be sufficient. What’s your thought on that have you tried it on top of anything and have you had any issues feeling the cold on winter snowy nights?
    Greetings from the UK and thanks for the video :)

    • @settohike
      @settohike  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think from memory the coldest night I have used my zlite on was -2 degrees. With my thermals and my cosy sleeping bag. The zlite still worked a treat! I think if it were to start to get colder or if there was snow underneath then you might have issues with feeling the cold! The only proper snow hiking i've done, I was lucky enough to score a space in the hut for the nights so the zlite never went on the ground for that trip! I hope your trip went great! 😀
