Just discovered you. I'm 63 and my shaving brush just came apart. Time for a new badger silver tip. Your videos are awesome. You are a rockstar. I love Dr. Hauschka Facial Toner misted on my face after shaving. Really, there is nothing like it. If they made a shaving cream/soap I would buy it. You are first class! Thanks
Having facial hair for the better part of 20 years now I have recently started a daily shave routine because of seborrhoeic dermatitis on my chin that has gotten worse with age. I use this exact post shave thanks to your recommendation and my shave has never felt better. I look forward to my morning shave now. Thanks Geo
Every once in a while I’ll use the ole alum for my face mostly after head shaves. Most times for my face I like witch hazel followed by a splash or balm. I prefer the affects of alum but find witch hazel more convenient & easier
Just tried an alum block for the first time tonight after shaving. Wow! What a difference! Should have invested in one years ago. Really did soothe my face with only minor dull stinging where I got a bit too close. After I rinsed it off and applied my usual Pinaud Clubman aftershave, there was no stinging or irritation whatsoever!
I tried your after shaving routine this morning after a 3-day beard growth. WOW! I really enjoyed it. The alum bar did not sting very much at all and I really like the Proraso products - I purchased the same ones you used. The fragrance is great and it lasted most of the day believe it or not. I could smell it. Thanks for the recommendation. I will use this routine from here on out.
Thank you for sharing this! I have after a long time finally ditched my Gillette multi blade cartridge razor for a safety razor and a shavette. Much better result and less shaveburn and pimples. But after I saw this video and tried it out it’s gotten even better!! It truly is the icing on the shave. Huge thank you!
Hi Geo Just thought I would let you know that my order arrived today. From the USA to the UK in just 3 days! Now that is fantastic service and better than many orders I've had from the UK! I would definitely recommend others from outside the USA to order from you. I'll be watching your Feather Straight video quite a few more times before I take the plunge though! LOL! Thanks also for the free samples; they are very much appreciated. Take care and keep you your great service. David
Thanks for so much info packed in your videos. I have just started wet shaving again after 5 years of using electric shaver. Because of you I also bought 2 vintage razors and found my grandfather's old Gillette. So cool.
@geofatboy - I have a pre shave tip that I stumbled across. Try rubbing abit of coconut oil on your face in the shower before a shave. Cheap and really good preshave oil, my skin feels great after. Would like to see you review your finings.
Thank you Geo for the prompt delivery on my alum block. heading to the U.P of Michigan this weekend for a little vacation. and yes all my wet shaving tools will be going with me. thank you again for you guildence and your help.
Just got into wet shaving been watching your videos for the past month and just bought a safety razor off your site. every vid has been super helpful thanks for all of em.
Luv your videos. After I shave, the first thing I do is take a waiting clean rag I have in a bowl of ice water. Ring out the rag and hold it on my face to close all my pores to try to keep the free from dirt. Dry my face apply Tend Skin (razor bump and ingrown hair treatment) with cotton ball. After that drys I apply some 100% Pure Aloe Vera gel it's for sun burn and preventing razor burn as well. Then I use The Groom Lounge's "Best for Last Aftershave" post shave balm.
Great videos!!! I'm a younger guy and just got my first shaving set from art of shaving for Christmas and I'm hooked on it. I was a little lost but thanks to your videos it's going much smoother, thanks! By the way, a very impressive collection behind you
Great info Geo and saved me! I had terrible razor burn after my first two shaves. This is the second time I went back to wet shaving after two years of the dreaded electric, used the cartridge crap ones for 22 years and this is my first time using a DE safety razor. I have a thicker Italian beard so my 5 o'clock shadow starts immediately after I shave. I added the Proraso pre shave before and after and no razor burn, and was able to complete 3 passes for a baby soft shave. I did notice when using it after I had some residue left on my face, kind of clumpy. Possible my face wasn't damp enough? Your vids are fantastic; thanks for all the effort you put in!
I like your website at shave nation. I will be ordering Alum block & Case and also the Proraso Nick Sealer Gel Bloodstop good information you give. Thank You. So much for these’s videos. Keep making them. It helps all of us seeing these helpful videos.
Primarily the cold water will close up the pores. The alum is an anti-septic and helps seal weepers, nicks, and burn. The Proraso /Trumpers skin food provides a seal and help moisturizes to keep the skin feeling good for many hours after.
I haven't switched to DE shaving yet, but I plan too. When I shave with my multiblade razor to dry my face I'll towel it off, then put a dash of Gold Bond powder on my hand and rub it into my face. The talc dries the skin off, the zinc oxide acts as a skin protectant, and the menthol adds a touch of chill to it. It works great for me, you should try it.
Howdy partner. Another masterpiece vid from the King of Shaves. Thanks for listening to us fans and responding to our request for the perfect shave, looking at your website... I'm quite keen to get my hands on the Feather butterfly DE featured in one of your vids to up my armoury collection of whisker killers! Since spring is just around the corner, i may try out the Proraso range Balm and pre/post cream to air condition my face during the warm months. Keep on Ravin' bout the Shavin' Peace bro!
Hot water opens pores and softens whiskers whereas cold water rinses of any remaining lather and closes pores. As well as giving a refreshing feeling of cleanliness. Very good for your skin : )
Today after shaving i used this homemade product my sister made. Its peppermint oil, aloe vera and some other things i dont know but i used it as a post shave gel and my skin became smooth and supple it worked nearly like a professional barber's after shave gel.
Geo - Great video! Of course! Appreciate you showing us your post-shave routine and products. Can't wait for my EJ DE89 I got from your website to arrive. Got a few more items I want when they're available. Thanks again... can't wait for the next one.
I got a sampler pack when I bought my DE razor a month ago. I have tried Derby, Feather, and Astra. Feather has performed the best (least irritation, closest shave), with Derby in second followed by Astra in a far last. I recommend Feather from my short-term experience
Your vids have been inspirational (yes, inspirational!!) to me! I cannot wait to try all of your suggestions! Thanks for the good service you provide through your company and your videos!
Just wanted to say thanks for this video. I always used Fahrenheit aftershave for it's antiseptic properties (namely alcohol). While I may still use this at the end I decided to get an alum block as I keep reading to avoid alcohol immediately after shaving. I also ordered the Proraso balm. I have the Proraso green as a preshave but when my order arrives will try your method.
Another excellent video! Question. If you use moisturizers or sun screen, at what point do you apply it during the process? I am assuming after the shave balm?
Whoa ! How did I miss this video - - I've used the Proraso pre shave but I've never used it as a post shave product. Use sparingly cause a little dab will do ya. And the Proraso balm is spectacular!
Hi Geo Another great video; keep them up Sir! Proraso is not that prevalent a high street product here in the UK (apart from internet sites) and so I’ve never considered using any of their range. But I’ve noticed that you use a lot of different products that they make and so it’s time to add another shelf to the shaving wing of the house, me thinks! LOL! Keep up the great work!
...posting such an item to the UK? Thanks for your reply to the "Kung Fu" post. LOL! I used to love this programme in my youth and then as I got older fell in love with another great US export: Hill Street Blues; often copied never bettered! And as the Sarge used to say, "You be careful out there!" Take care Grasshopper and keep up your outstanding work! David
My post shave is a wash with cool water the some Dominican Lime Bay Rum (very traditional) or Bolt Barber Bay Rum (longer lasting scent and a modern leather like scent). I use a Styptic Pencil rarely as a careful shaver but had never seen an Alum Block used. I might have to get one.
After my last hot/warm rinse, I use my osma alum block, I've found for me rinsing with Luke warm/cool water is better than cold after this. Then I use the neutrogena sensitive aftershave balm. Let that dry most of the way, then a liberal splash of clubman for that final invigorating 'tingle'.
Geo! Thank you very much for this video. Somehow I have more skin problems after shaving without any particular reason lately, so I tried to use the Proraso pre-shave the way you offered and I really like the result! Cheers, Anatoly
Ive not used the Proraso cream or balm post shave before although I use the shave soap from them often and their alcohol based aftershave. One of my favorite combos post shave though after an alum bloc, is to use a classic aftershave scent like Pinaid Clubman or the Proraso then after I do my barber towel trick do dry just a bit but not completely(mainly just to cool off) I then apply Clinique mens facial lotion which I find to be a great product. No greasy feeling afterwards just nice clean but moisturizing feel. Try it and see what you think sometime. Love your videos and these are where I learned to use a safety razor, keep up the great works and reviews.
Have you ever tried Vifrex dopo barba? Italian made after shave gel that comes in a small tube. You only need a pea sized dab to cover your entire face and neck. It is incredibly refreshing and smells great, not too strong. I bought a few tubes years ago and recently I needed more but could not find anyone selling it in the US any longer. I found a place in Europe that would ship to the US and decided I would buy a bunch to make the shipping worth while. They only had 7 tubes but this will probably last me the rest of my life. It is a shame more people in the US can't try Vifrex.
I don't know if anyone else has said this, but you could probably get by with using about a quarter the amount of the Proraso Pre/Post Shave Balm. I get a thin layer that covers about a third of both my index fingerprints, and spread that over my face and neck. I little goes a long way with that stuff.
I can vouch for this. The perfume can cause some irritation. Your water may also play a part; my face is always dry in my new house because the water is different from my old town's.
Always enjoy the videos geo! I’m going to try the proraso for sure. Been into wet shaving for about a year now and will never go back. I’m currently using col. conk shave soaps and liking them. Any videos of you reviewing those?
If you execute cold towel(you can put wet towel into freezer just before shaving ceromany) between alum and after shave balsam or lotion you don’t need hair dryer.
Hi Geo. Thanks for all your great videos. Very helpful for DE razor newbies like myself. I notice toward the end of this video you mention you also use the Trumper skin food. Is that on top of the shaving balm, or instead of it, after you've applied the Proraso pre/post shave cream? I'm in Australia, which is a pretty harsh environment for skin. So your advice/suggestions would be very helpful. Best wishes, Matt
Have you ever tried any Taylor of Old Bond Street aftershave gel? I've currently got an alcohol free, sandalwood gel on the go and its quite good. Might add the aloe bar now after watching your video. Thanks!
I found that I stopped feeling a need for an after shave product when I stopped rinsing my face. When I'm done shaving, all I do is wipe the excess shaving cream off with a dry cotton towel, no rinsing my face at all and it's drastically cut down on the post-shaving irritation. I guess it's probably because I'm leaving more natural oils on my face that way.
Thanks a lot! your videos are awesome and i get a lot out of them. my face feels a lot better. thanks a lot for answering my questions. i look forward to more updates and videos
Hey Geo, and everyone else! I got a nice tip a few weeks back, about razor bumps! Make a cup of Black Tea, set it in the fridge, after shaving, apply the cold Black Tea, for about 5 minutes, then rinse off... It is the best razor bump treatment i've tried, and i've pretty much tried all the so called " Razor Burn / Bump relieve " there is on the market :) This is a cheap alternative, that really works, and followed up by an oil, depending on skin type, is a miracle!
If you want an inexpensive pre-shave oil just buy some Grape Seed Oil at your grocery store. My fave aftershave product is Krampert's Finest Frosbite....it's expensve at about $17 a bottle but DAYUM the emollients in it are awesome. Feels great going on but 15-20 minutes later is when you really notice how supple it makes your skin.
Wow at the beginning I thought you were either wearing a mask or dead. 11 years ago our technology was no where close to where we are now. I’m glad your a big success. Btw what was put in those shelves. I can’t decide if it’s a photo or if it’s a shelf with shaving equipment
Do you mean the straight razor holder hanging on the door? BTW-I started 11 years ago filming with a Flip Mino and now use a Canon Vixia video camera or an iphone 12 ProMax so yes, technology has come a very long way!
Thanks for the informative videos - you have been an inspiration for my switching from the disposable razors to the world of safety DE razors. I am concerned about the Alum Block. It is basically a Potassium Aluminum Sulfate block. Aluminum has been repeatedly indicated as a cause of breast cancer, Alzheimer's disease, autism, infertility and permanent damage to the central nervous system. I am looking for an alternative product that will help reduce skin burn/irritation - any recommendations? Thanks
Thanks for the reply, Geo. I'll be putting the order in later today. Any tips you could provide that may assist me in moving to the feather straight would be most appreciated. I would consider myself to be a fairly good DE shaver (although nowhere near your standard, obviously!) and never get nicks or burn anymore. My razor of choice is the Progress and I rarely go above a 3. I also never perform an ATG pass as my skin is too sensitive. Any pointers you may have would be most welcome. I was ...
Hello There! I will teu the allum stone, I've never tried before, because I used a Very good after shave gel from A brazilian Brand Called Dr.Stone , but sometimes I get harsh cuts, and for this case this after shave it's not so interesting. I will try to make my own after shave and see How It works. Congrats for the video Geo.
I do a cold water rinse and I grab an ice cube and rub it on where I just shaved. Works well and helps prevent burn! Also I soak my razor in ice cold water for a more comfortable shave.
is that poraso post shave balm you favourite of all time? How does Bluebeards balm compare? What is your all time favourite? Love the blowdryer bit btw! haha
I'm a Truefitt and Hill man all the way. I use their Ultimate Comfort range. Gonna introduce an Alum Bloc now though. As usual, great demos and advice from you Mr Geo. Cheers. Would you put Cologne onto the face? I thought this would defeat the object of the balm?
If you don't have one yet, the same stuff is also sold as deodorant sticks and the price is much much less. $5-6 for 4.x Oz when sold as deodorant, versus $8-20 for 3.x Oz when sold as a alum bar for shaving.
With a razor, you woulndt have to worry about hair getting stuck in your equipment. Do a few strokes, rinse, ready. Other razors requiere a lot of fiddling in between as hair gets stuffed everywhere.
I quite like to apply witch hazel before balm - it does seem to leave my skin feeling smooth, though whether I'd get the sme result without the witch hazel I don't know!
Hi Geo, Nice to salute you from Spain. Do you use proraso pre/post only after your shave or you also use it before the shave? Thank you and best regards.
Was this really 10 years ago. I purchased an Alum block on the back of watching this. Has been part of my routine ever since.
I know-Time flies right?
Just discovered you. I'm 63 and my shaving brush just came apart. Time for a new badger silver tip. Your videos are awesome. You are a rockstar.
I love Dr. Hauschka Facial Toner misted on my face after shaving. Really, there is nothing like it. If they made a shaving cream/soap I would buy it.

I saw this a week ago and ordered the proraso cream. I've just used it for the first time and 'wow', thats a fresh shave. Thank you for your videos.
Thanks for so much info packed in your videos. I have just started wet shaving again after 5 years of using electric shaver. Because of you I also bought 2 vintage razors and found my grandfather's old Gillette. So cool.

The Proraso pre/post shave cream is amazing. Makes all the difference after I shave
Just got into wet shaving been watching your videos for the past month and just bought a safety razor off your site. every vid has been super helpful thanks for all of em.

i copied this fatboy's routine and its a good one.. highly recommended. thanks geo!
The Proraso Balm has not been discontinued. It has been reformulated. You can find it below:
shavenation.com/collections/proraso-aftershave
No witch hazel in the new balm. It's a different product. The one in your video is much better.
Thanks Albert, I sent you the alum blocks in response to your email.
Again, thanks for the tips on the alum block. It was the one thing in my new DE kit that I knew I needed but didn't really know how to use.
My pleasure-I'm glad I could help.
Hot water opens pores and softens whiskers whereas cold water rinses of any remaining lather and closes pores. As well as giving a refreshing feeling of cleanliness. Very good for your skin : )
Today after shaving i used this homemade product my sister made. Its peppermint oil, aloe vera and some other things i dont know but i used it as a post shave gel and my skin became smooth and supple it worked nearly like a professional barber's after shave gel.
you should do a tutorial on bandannas ;)
Nice video. I use the proraso pre/post balm too. Proraso is the best shaving stuff for both value and quality!
I like the idea of the alum block better than the stick, it's more massive and the feedback aspect of it is appealing.
Thank you sir, I just added an alum block to my Amazon basket.
Great video, great info, great information, great heart
Fantastic! I'm so happy for you, and Amazon: shavenation.com/collections/all-shaving-remedies
Geo - Great video! Of course! Appreciate you showing us your post-shave routine and products. Can't wait for my EJ DE89 I got from your website to arrive. Got a few more items I want when they're available. Thanks again... can't wait for the next one.
So I saw this regime beginning of last week and copied it.OMG so refreshing, skin is so smooth I will be using this from now on
I got a sampler pack when I bought my DE razor a month ago. I have tried Derby, Feather, and Astra. Feather has performed the best (least irritation, closest shave), with Derby in second followed by Astra in a far last. I recommend Feather from my short-term experience
Respect to this man for putting every product in the description. Even the shirt he wears and watch. 😂
Just trying to make it easier for everyone to fined them. No need to waste time searching...
Your vids have been inspirational (yes, inspirational!!) to me! I cannot wait to try all of your suggestions! Thanks for the good service you provide through your company and your videos!

Another excellent video! Question. If you use moisturizers or sun screen, at what point do you apply it during the process? I am assuming after the shave balm?
It's your preference. Depending on the sunscreen, I might just stick with that.
In fact I just purchased the alum block you have in the video and RazoRock After Shave Wax from your store. I can't wait to add these to my routine.
Whoa ! How did I miss this video - - I've used the Proraso pre shave but I've never used it as a post shave product. Use sparingly cause a little dab will do ya. And the Proraso balm is spectacular!

You nailed it..I love the proraso products. New to DE shaving...so these videos are gold.
My post shave application is the alum block followed by a light coating of coconut oil.
Good stuff Norm!
...posting such an item to the UK?
Thanks for your reply to the "Kung Fu" post. LOL! I used to love this programme in my youth and then as I got older fell in love with another great US export: Hill Street Blues; often copied never bettered!
And as the Sarge used to say, "You be careful out there!"
Take care Grasshopper and keep up your outstanding work!

excellent work man you got me into straight razor shaving, beginning to appreciate the art.

I use the same post shave cream listed in the video and it is awesome. It works even better with hot water instead cold water.
Geo!
Thank you very much for this video. Somehow I have more skin problems after shaving without any particular reason lately, so I tried to use the Proraso pre-shave the way you offered and I really like the result!

I have the proraso sandalwood pre shave, and I love it, great smell, just picked up the cream in the tube, can't wait to try it out

Proraso has been around since 1926 Good stuff and time tested, from Italia!
Only two months into using a straight. Videos have been a big help whilst learning.
Thanks Geo will be watching all I can find.
Same here. My local barber used a same type of after shave gel/cream for my face.
Awesome straight razor collection!
If you execute cold towel(you can put wet towel into freezer just before shaving ceromany) between alum and after shave balsam or lotion you don’t need hair dryer.
I really like the Blue Astringent Lotion from Kiehls for post shave stuff, it's pricey, so I always ask for it during the holidays!
Thanks!
awesome video! thanks for the tips!
Love your videos, keep up the great work!
Interesting-Thanks for sharing.
The “alum block” tip is a NEW one for me. 👍🏼
What’s your take on “SPLASHES?” 🤔
I use them all: Alum, Balm, Splash! th-cam.com/video/rHw-y2alqms/w-d-xo.html
2:48 Good to see that the Proraso aftershave can be used on the nose should you choose to shave your nose.
Thanks a lot! your videos are awesome and i get a lot out of them. my face feels a lot better. thanks a lot for answering my questions. i look forward to more updates and videos
yeah i have relized that with derby razors thats why iv swiched back to Astra thats a very good brand to use i recomend that to any one
When would you apply the skin food? Would you use that in addition to the after shave balm, or one or the other?
Very good post shave advice; thanks for posting!
nice work geo!
instead of the alum I like to use thayers lavender witch hazel...works and smells great!
Thanks
Love your videos awesome job 🇬🇧
thnx a LOT geofatboy....just had my first DE shave today and it was AMAZING...thnx a LLLOOOOOTTTTT!!!
Proraso pre shaving cream, after shave is a game changer!

where do you purchase your products. thank you for the tips. good video.
A lot of his products can be found on his shave nation website. Also amazon
I do a cold water rinse and I grab an ice cube and rub it on where I just shaved. Works well and helps prevent burn! Also I soak my razor in ice cold water for a more comfortable shave.
Geo what do you think of Castle Forbes? I use the lavender balm. I love it. Their shaving cream is amazing. Lime or Lavender!
I have naturally oil skin, so I don't need moisturizers on my face. I find good old witch hazel is the perfect way for me to finish a shave.
is that poraso post shave balm you favourite of all time? How does Bluebeards balm compare? What is your all time favourite? Love the blowdryer bit btw! haha
I'm a Truefitt and Hill man all the way. I use their Ultimate Comfort range. Gonna introduce an Alum Bloc now though. As usual, great demos and advice from you Mr Geo. Cheers.
Would you put Cologne onto the face? I thought this would defeat the object of the balm?
Great video, Geo!
If you don't have one yet, the same stuff is also sold as deodorant sticks and the price is much much less. $5-6 for 4.x Oz when sold as deodorant, versus $8-20 for 3.x Oz when sold as a alum bar for shaving.
Excellent video brotha
@geofatboy, your videos are amazing! Between you and @mantic59 I have learned so much. Thank you.
With a razor, you woulndt have to worry about hair getting stuck in your equipment.
Do a few strokes, rinse, ready.
Other razors requiere a lot of fiddling in between as hair gets stuffed everywhere.
I love your videos!! Thank you from a female shaver
Sweet! Glad you like them! Always great to hear from the ladies!
i do, Alum Block, witch hazle, clubman or old spice, then and post shave blam
what about that cost-effective Turkish lemon aftershave. I ordered it will be my first time using it, I bought me based on positive reviews.
I like the tase of my Alum Bloc, is that wrong?
+Jesse Pinkman won't do anything to you.
I quite like to apply witch hazel before balm - it does seem to leave my skin feeling smooth, though whether I'd get the sme result without the witch hazel I don't know!
Have you tried any of the body shop products? I have and i love them.
Cheers
James
Hi Geo,
Nice to salute you from Spain. Do you use proraso pre/post only after your shave or you also use it before the shave?
Thank you and best regards.
