You were one of the lucky ones. I lived in WV near Wheeling during the early 70's and on one occasion, Tammy had to do the show by herself. Years later, as an entertainer myself, I had the honor of opening for George. I love this man so much.
my god that's a country singer. im 24 years old and I know that he can cut through my soul with the way he sings. he's not just a pop icon with a southern accent. George when it comes to your music I wish I was born many years ago so I could have grown up with it. Cheers!
what i always say is' first theres george jones then theres other singers' the best ever music in the world is american country music and george is the best
The bass player is none other than Johnny Paycheck . We sent a lot of people to Nashville from the Dayton Ohio area. Wayne Hobbs, on steel guitar. Dave Salyer playing lead, Frank Myers, song writer of several songs and lead guitar player, just so many. I played with them. Opened up for George years ago in Indiana. He and I were alone backstage and he looked at me smiled and start sing the Race Is On. awesome. The Adams brothers came from this area and played for Johnny and George.
Thanks for sharing.....What a singer,What a Song. Johnny Paycheck might have been a heck raiser, but he was very talented also... I like it when he sings with Jones And Price.
This song was on my mind all day long. George was great! Imagine my surprise when Mr. Johnny Paycheck appeared on the left of our screen!!! Johnny as harmony & bass player!!! Right on!!! A classic video and thank you!!!!!!!!!!
With George, his voice is the greatest instrument in every song he does, and with Waylon it's the beat and the rhythm that lures me in, along with the outlaw style of each song. So not counting the music I would also say that George is by far the greatest country singer or just the greatest singer that ever lived. Thanks for posting
my lord,he just drags you into his songs!!ive had thousands a drinks w george &will hav thousands more with him!th black artists called him th white man with soul!we will NEVER SEE another like him!!!!
Thanks for the 411..Grew up with George and Johnny but never seen this before... amazing...Btw Johnny died penniless and is buried in George's family plot
That was so kind of George Jones. Poor Johnny Paycheck died of emphysema at only 65. What a hard life he had. His health had been ravaged by cigarettes, drugs, alcohol and his stay in prison.
I love REAL Country Music like this, but when I see this video it makes me sad, because I realize that GREATS like George Jones don't have much longer to grace us with this wonderful music. Paycheck is already gone, Jones will be 80 soon. We only have a few legends left, Ray Price, Charley Pride, Merle Haggard, Willie, Little Jimmy and just a few others. When those guys are all gone Country Music dies with them.
George Jones is simply amazing. Thanks for posting this. When old George leaves us, a big part of real Country Music goes with him. What an amazing talented man.
Right up there with "There's No Justice" and "Where Grass Won't Grow" as the best record from his Musicor period. God bless George Jones! He remains country music's absolute master.
I still have the album this one came out on, bought shortly after its release in the summer of 1965, nearly worn out now. This is one of the best tear jerk songs ever made. Thanks.
Two of the best real country singers!! in this video, the late johnny paycheck singing backup & playin' guitar with george jones!! i love it, and thanks you for posting two of the greats!!!
this is one of the great songs written by texas master singer songwriter leon payne and co wrote by george jones, leon payne's songs were recorded by jim reeves and his biggest hit was 'i love you because'
Wow, I DID NOT KNOW this is Johnny Paycheck. Looking at him in this pre-cocaine video and comparing it to how he looked in his post-cocaine videos SHOULD be enough to keep everyone and I mean EVERYONE off drugs. And what a beautiful voice Paycheck had.
This has always been my favorite song by George Jones. I'd like to see another version of him doing it with more hair though. I really feel in love with it in 1967,
There is a CD released in 2002 that in my opinion is the best Paycheck album available today. It's called "THE SOUL AND THE EDGE-THE BEST OF JOHNNY PAYCHECK" it's available on many music sites, trust me, if you like Paycheck you couldn't find a better album!
I also wanted to comment on the power of Jones voice- look how far he is from that Microphone! Not to many folks have ever been able to belt a tune like that and make it come out as smooth and perfect as the ol' Possum!
yes and written by master texas songwriter leon payne, the best country music at the moment is texas country music and thanks to justin trevino and folks like him for keeping country music like it should be with twin fiddles and loud crying steel guitars.
Who's going to fill his shoes??? Country is no longer country. We have lost the greatest of all times. Rest In Piece old friend, you will be missed. May God Bless.
What are we going to do? The best voice in country music is gone, Thank God we still have his recordings, we can still listen to some "Jones" when we get down and out, R I P old friend.. You are missed.
Look how far Jones is from the microphone... goes to show you how powerful his voice is! He can really blast out a tune. What an awesome talent. In my opinion when we lose George Jones, a HUGE part of REAL Country music dies with him. I hope he sticks around for a while!
george jones & johnny paychecks voices blende together like buck and don!!!!
There's no other singer who's ever had that George Jones sound. The BEST ever!!
'George Jones is so good he makes me feel ashamed to be a singer' - Merle Haggard.
Thanks for all the nights in with just the two of us George. RIP.
I'm 17. And I gotta say George jones is true country! Ain't nothin like his music
johnny paycheck singing harmony, now thats country
You have to be a total badass to have Johnny Paycheck singing backup!
I will play your songs till I die.
You were one of the lucky ones. I lived in WV near Wheeling during the early 70's and on one occasion, Tammy had to do the show by herself. Years later, as an entertainer myself, I had the honor of opening for George. I love this man so much.

Greatest country singer of all time. One of the best voices of any genre ever. RIP George. We're missing you already.

Top vocals from George and its just a gleeful added bonus that Paycheck is singing backup!
This is the "REAL" stuff. No one does the music justice like George!!
With George, his voice is the greatest instrument in every song he does, and with Waylon it's the beat and the rhythm that lures me in, along with the outlaw style of each song. So not counting the music I would also say that George is by far the greatest country singer or just the greatest singer that ever lived. Thanks for posting

wow George and johnny paycheck were so young.
wow, the vocals, perfection---no wonder Sinatra singled Jones out as one of the greats
I love REAL Country Music like this, but when I see this video it makes me sad, because I realize that GREATS like George Jones don't have much longer to grace us with this wonderful music. yeah, he reminds me of Sinatra in his world, just having some effortless-seeming quality that no one else seems to match. I can listen to him all day
This song kicks ass.
