Some people don't rate this album as highly as some of their others but for me it's the one I heard first, in autumn 2000, and I've loved it ever since.
Probably the best song I have listened to in a long, long time. Thank you, Belle and Sebastian! Love how the 'boy' turns into 'man' by the end of the song; marvelous subtlety in touch by you guys there. I am veritably awestruck. The process of transition from juvenescence to adulthood is depicted vividly, how life greets and graces us with good times and gauntlets, alike. The war here, to me, is purely metaphorical. Then again, that's the genius behind the song!
"I reminded myself of the words you said When we were getting on And I bet you're making shells back home For a steady man to wear 'Round his neck Well, it won't hurt to think of you As if you're waiting for this letter to arrive Because I'll be here quite a while"
I fought in a war and I left my friends behind me To go looking for the enemy, and it wasn't very long Before I would stand with another boy in front of me And a corpse that just fell into me, with the bullets flying round And I reminded myself of the words you said when we were getting on And I bet you're making shells back home for a steady boy to wear Round his neck, well it won't hurt to think of you as if you're waiting for This letter to arrive because I'll be here quite a while I fought in a war and I left my friends behind me To go looking for the enemy, and it wasn't very long Before I found out that the sickness there ahead of me Went beyond the bedsit infamy of the decade gone before And I reminded myself of the words you said when we were getting on And I bet you're making shells back home for a steady man to wear Round his neck, well it won't hurt to think of you as if you're waiting for This letter to arrive because I'll be here quite a while I fought in a war, and I didn't know where it would end It stretched before me infinitely, I couldn't really think Of the day beyond now, keep your head down pal There's trouble plenty in this hour, this day I can see hope I can see light And I reminded myself of the looks you gave when we were getting on And I bet you're making shells back home for a steady man to wear Round his neck, well it won't hurt to think of you as if you're waiting for This letter to arrive because I'll be here quite a while

This is the song that made me take notice of Belle and Sebastian. Haven't stopped listening since.
👍👍👍
My favourite album of theirs. It’s just brilliant
brilliant song. more people should know this tune. Especially as the human body is still used as weapon against others.
I love the progression in their music melodies and PULP so.

I fought in a war, and I didn't know where it would end
It stretched before me infinitely, I couldn't really think
Trumpet solo 너무 좋습니다.~
Exactly. Almost as good as the one in Love's - Alone Again Or. More trumpet in pop-music......
"I reminded myself of the words you said
When we were getting on
And I bet you're making shells back home
For a steady man to wear
'Round his neck
Well, it won't hurt to think of you
As if you're waiting for this letter to arrive
Because I'll be here quite a while"
Una de mis preferidas.
Simplesmente maravilhoso!!
Beautifull song!!!

I fought in a war, and I didn't know where it would end
It stretched before me infinitely, I couldn't really think
Of the day beyond now, keep your head down pal
There's trouble plenty in this hour, this day
I can see hope I can see light
And I reminded myself of the looks you gave when we were getting on
And I bet you're making shells back home for a steady man to wear
Round his neck, well it won't hurt to think of you as if you're waiting for
This letter to arrive because I'll be here quite a while
with love and squalor...

Kendi savaşımda kendimi kusursuz bir şekilde öldürüyorum ve bu büyük bir acı veriyor
I can't see hope I can't see light
