Oddly enough, Studio Ghibli had something light and cheery from the get-go: My Neighbor Totoro. The two films were originally released TOGETHER as a double bill!

If you like really dumb alternate history, Deep Blue Fleet is a pretty fun, if insane, anime from the 90s. The general premise is that when Yamamoto dies in 1943, he's reincarnated back in his body in 1905 with all his memories of WW2, and devotes his life to winning the war. Japan proceeds to avoid the military coup, build a super advanced fleet and curb stomp the USA, before joining Britain to destroy Germany, which is for some reason also ridiculously OP in this timeline, destroying the Soviets in a few months. It's completely divorced from real history, but it features a battle between the Yamato and the Bismarck, so...
Don’t know if you like navy or not, there’s a anime called High School Fleet, and it’s very similar to Girls Und Panzer, instead they changed tanks into Japanese warships
I would have replaced GuP with As the Wind Rises, tbh. Compared to tankery Azur Lane, Horikoshi's story is such a great watch! You need to have a great understanding of the character, the political situation, and even to the dialogue itself (which is enjoyable). I still love GuP, but it offers little to no context of WW2 - compared to AtWR.
Very good video, ty for recommendations. But i cant just not say this, the guy who made Zero actually created one of the best ww2 planes. It wasnt even outdated in later years, just very poorly used and unforgiving for new pilots.
it was designed for use by highly skilled pilots as it lacked armour and was unforgiving to errors, Japan just ran out of skilled pilots and was forced to rush training like every other country meaning many just weren't skilled enough to effectively fly the plane later into the war.

First Squad: The Moment of Truth (2009) It is good unlike its imdb score suggests. It is just a strictly an Eastern Front movie. If you are not familiar you may not like it.
I found the homeland bombing experience fascinating and especially the perspective of Hiroshima. The little things like pieces of the city ending up in surrounding areas.
This film tells us the perspective of the Japanese people, many lived deceived by propaganda and believed themselves to be the good guys, if they knew the crimes their army committed they would understand why they were attacked

The first few chapters shows their childhood and later it shows the ww2 condition. There is no magic, fantasy, supernatural or other espects to this series and I highly recommend reading this
