Billy Kimber is the most real person from the series, and a lot of Thomas Shelby's story arcs from season 1 to 3 follow the pattern of the real Kimber's life. But even Kimber never made it as far up as the fictional Thomas Shelby.

My understanding is that the fictional Shelby family had some Romani blood (genetically different than Irish) and had also come out of the Irish Traveler community (genetically Irish). Such mixing was not especially common. Not an expert, but I believe the Romani gypsies probably had more mystical, occultist beliefs, but the Irish in general had no shortage of superstitions and supernatural beliefs as well. (Big on curses, for sure.) There's a couple/few vids on YT that get into that. Here's one that really goes into details for 1.5 hours: th-cam.com/video/ak1CTBv5BTY/w-d-xo.html
