I have been both ways across rabbit pass - waterfall face and it would have to say that I think using walking poles would be more a hazard than a help on both, a short ice axe perhaps would be useful. The exposure on the waterfall face is daunting and although foot and handholds are more than adequate; wet or snowy conditions combined with slippery snow grass makes this a crossing for the more experienced. But thanks for letting me relive those times

The dead snowgrass was a bane on the trip I did recently (last week) going down the waterfall face from Matukituki side. You just couldn't see the steps because of it, and had to guess everything. Super challenging! It made Gifford Crack look easy! Not to mention, it was hard to find the way down. The markers are set for those going up and you can't see most of them. Poles I would not advise for using! Microspikes though, definitely helped!

Yes It is very steep as it looked but if you follow the orange pole it is negotiable.
