When a WrestleMania with no fans in attendance isn't weird enough for you, adding a dark match (usually reserved to give the live crowd a unique experience outside of the televised show) for the no fans in attendance will surely do it.
It’s genuinely one of those moments that I just can’t comprehend. Like it doesn’t really matter but it is just really stupid. Why a dark match with no fans, just why.
Watching this after John Cena talked about the Firefly Funhouse match and how it was much more collaborative between him and Bray that people necessarily gave him credit for has honestly increased the legacy of that match to me. I hope John finds the original draft to the Firefly Funhouse match, as I would love to see that script.
Bruh idk why but that delivery on “AJ styles was back in a month…that’s a pretty quick recovery time from DEATH” absolutely took me out 😂😂😂 cheer for that
I listen to these during my work day, I just finished the podcast and I had an hour before I get to take my lunch. Thank you for the hour to make that hour faster.
The thing about Truth is, he can turn an innocuous sentence like “Hello guys, I’m R-Truth” into an absolute gut-buster just by delivering it a certain way. He has this natural ability to make anything he says funny, like the whole “live, laugh… and love” thing.
Weirdly, WM 36 got me back into wrestling. I had stopped watching for nearly 10 years but once I saw they were gonna do the biggest show with no fans, i was just like “🤷♂️ got nothing else to do “. So i sign up for the network trial and hated the show. Didn’t know most of the wrestlers. Had no context for the matches But afterwards, i figure I’ve got a few weeks of free trial left, so i just watch old ppvs and i was reminded how much I loved wrestling. And now I’m still watching 4 years later
Same here! Being Scottish, I heard a guy called Drew was main eventing WM36 and being in lockdown, thought I might as well check it out! And now here I still am!!
Exact same here. I tuned out in like 2016 but With not having any sports going on, wrestling kinda was the thing that made up for it. Haven’t left since 😅
Being 30 at the time and watching wrestling since 1997, I never, never, ever thought of watching something when the audience is an integral part of the whole show and fans couldn't come and participate... A fanless WrestleMania 😮😮😮 and the whole Pandemic Era WWE is gonna be one of those things we as wrestling fans will not remember fondly or anything suchlike 😢
To zoom out from the Rhea/Charlotte match even further, Charlotte’s title run wound up being a massive dud because all she did was appear on NXT a couple times to set up a triple threat with Rhea and Iyo Sky. And even though Charlotte dropped the title in that match, it was still booked to protect her because it ended with Iyo pinning Rhea clean and Charlotte nowhere in sight (just like the triple threat with her, Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey). In the end putting the belt on Charlotte didn’t improve ratings, she didn’t put anyone over, Rhea got her self-confidence shattered (she’s said it took the better part of a year for her to rebuild it), even Iyo didn’t get much out of it because the whole program was based around Charlotte saying “you developmental kids are out of my league” and being proven right. EDIT: I almost forgot, having Rhea rock up on Raw after the Rumble and challenge Charlotte sucked all the wind out of what was supposed to be a big defense against Bianca Belair the following month. At the time people thought Bianca/Rhea could go either way since both were on the shortlist for call-ups, but once Charlotte/Rhea was confirmed there was no mystery left.
OH MY FN LORD. This segment is unreal. 1:00:24 Impromptu Top 5 Favorite Shots in Cinema History list. Unbelievable how funny this is, weeping with laughter. Bravo all involved.
The Boneyard Match was the best WCW Road Wild match ever. The Firefly Funhouse Match was the wrestling equivalent of the second half of The End of Evangelion. From biker fantasy to everything tumbling down. Tumbling down. Tumbling down.
That's one of the most apt comparisons I've ever seen. Much like EoE, I'm not quite sure what was going on in the Firefly Funhouse match, but I think I liked it.
Gotta be honest, great video by Jack. Like these look back kinda episodes. Also, I stopped watching wrestling at thd end of the attitudd era, so it was my time in isolation where I started watching wrestling again and found cultaholic.
Jack explaining the orten Vs edge match: "Randy covers himself in water and it's hot" Jack explaining the end of the orten Vs edge match: "edge cries " Me: " Jack are you sure you were watching wrestling "
My technical wrestling fandom still can’t believe we got Gulak Vs. Cesaro on a PPV/PLE, much less on WrestleMania. I don’t even care that it was pre-show, that was still cool to see
I just rewatched the Boneyard match and it is SO southern hahaha, which i totally didnt realize when i first watched it live. But yeah it holds up. Jack is the best, I love this series.
Another funny thing about the low blow from Dolph to Otis is that Michael Cole is yelling about the low blow and how the ref didn't see it, and it's clear that Charles Robinson can hear him 😂
I honestly thought this was better than the boneyard match by a mile and the most entertaining match on the card. Told a good story, was really creative and hilarious. Cena played the part well and Bray was a very sympathetic heel who managed to be funny af one minute and terrifying the next. This was a freakin masterpiece.
I thought the Artist Collective would have worked, had they embraced the gimmick and used handicap matches and stipulation matches to keep the IC belt rotating between the three of them.
The Firefly Funhouse was sublime. Because it's not an actual match, I can't put it in my top 10 Mania matches, but it is in its own unique category always hovering around it.
Never seen the Boneyard Match. From your description I think that will remain true lol. I couldn't stand Taker beating AJ in his last match after Lesnar broke the streak... Like, Lesnar going over Taker at Mania is the single greatest missed opportunity in the history of wrestling (wasting a win that could have turned even the Brooklyn Brawler into Hulk Hogan on an established main eventer). I legitimately haven't watched any of Taker's post-Lesnar Mania matches because win or lose they were just meaningless in my head. And judging by the matches he had at Mania between Lesnar and the Boneyard, WWE agreed.
Oh man, got to the end of the Boneyard Match and thought the video was about to end only to immediately realize it was just day 1 and there was still a whole other half of the video to enjoy. 😅👍
This wrestlemania is one of my favorites. It was the distraction I needed at the time, I and several family members had covid at the time it aired. I sat there and got to forget about it all for a bit. It was comforting for me.
It's strange, I seem to remember that Night 1 Tag Team Ladder Match having to get switched to one from each team because of some Covid rule where they could only have X number of people in the building at once, and having all 6 people would put them over that limit.
I think that was the rumour going in, but it was confirmed afterwards Miz was actually just sick so they didn't take the risk. I don't believe it was ever revealed whether or not it was Covid, I think it was just precaution to change the match.
I honestly still think Wrestlemania 36 should have been a free view, rather than a PPV/PLE. As it was at a time when the world quite literally shut down.
You know what makes the choking on the weight equipment spot even more uncomfortable in the Orton/Edge match? Dark Side of the Ring had just done the episode on Benoit the Tuesday before and went into detail about how he hung himself on the weight equipment. Why Vince thought this would be a good spot in that match with that episode being all over Twitter the entire week, I’m sure we’ll never understand Vince’s mindset.
Definitely in the same boat as Jack. The Boneyard Match was always just pretty... ehhh to me. It wasn't bad and fine for what it was but wasn't enjoyable for me. I know some love it but when you consider that's Taker's last ever "match" it just feels a bit underwhelming. When there was the stuff recently about him hinting at one -last ride- more match, I was actually ok with the idea as him getting a proper send-off in front of fans would seem better than the Boneyard Match. But then the match might be worse than Goldberg in Saudi so it'd make the BYM a great ending...
I know 2020 isnt really positively looked back on, but the crazy thing for me is that 2020 was the year I became a Wrestling fan. I was randomly looking at some promos of The Rock and said this crap is awesome! So then I figured out where to watch Raw on USA and 4 years later im still rolling on as not just a fan WWE, but Pro Wrestling as a whole!😁
Jack ‘national football knowledge’ was scared to tell people that match was trash? I wasn’t! I was on socials all day fighting whiners over that bbq-yard match 😂
I've never seen the taker vs aj styles boneyard match ☠️ .. I wasn't into wrestling around the covid era, I couldn't get into watching it without the crowd as much... But ❗️ your description made me wanna watch it. You were honest and funny but made it sound interesting and like a part of history (that i am clearly missing out on 😅) so I'll definitely go watch it tonight 🍿 🎬 Thank you
I truly never watched the boneyard match cause fuck that shit. Listening to your description of it has intrigued me enough that I have to watch it now, so thanks for that jack.
It beats The Ultimate Deletion, and that match with Randy & Bray in terms of edited matches or whatever it’s called. If you’ve watched either of them, then the Taker & AJ match is an upgrade.
@@FatherJacksBrick I think the Randy/Bray one is hilarious, mostly because Randy is no-selling the whole time. He's looking for Bray, walks into a room filed with spooky dismembered doll parts, and his face just says "Damn, he's not here, this is annoying."
This show was really weird booking-wise considering what happened at the next WM. Bryan was in the Universal title match, Morrison lost to Bad Bunny, Bobby successfully defended the WWE title, Rhea won the Raw title, Otis wasn't even on the actual show.
Wrestlemania 36: The four major world title matches include Becky Lynch (Raw Women's Title) Drew McIntyre (Raw Men's), Bayley (Smackdown Women's Title) and provisionally Roman Reigns (Smackdown Men's) before he pulled out. It’s weird to think the lockdown started over 4 years ago. Time has certainly flew by since then.
The thing about Truth is, he can turn an innocuous sentence like “Hello guys, I’m R-Truth” into an absolute gut-buster just by delivering it a certain way. He has this natural ability to make anything he says funny, like the whole “live, laugh… and love” thing.

In a vacuum the match is great, but with context it certainly has aged poorly. A massive example of Charlotte wins lol
This all could have been avoided if Shayna just won the damn Rumble instead lmao 😭
Charlotte has been a vacuum for years
