Engine Out - Removing Our Volvo Engine from Our Sailboat E28

- This week we remove the heart of our sailboat: our Volvo Penta 55 hp diesel engine! We ran our engine dry, something you hope never happens, because of an unknown leak in the oil pan. So, we called in the experts to help us hoist it up and out.
It's not all work and no play: we also take you along to discover the shores of Lake Izabal, Guatemala's largest lake. We let the Pawed Crew run to their heart's content. I also explain how we feed our 7 rescue dogs an all-natural diet, completely, 100% free from dry kibble.
What happened to our engine? We were leaving Utila, Honduras, to get back to the Rio Dulce for hurricane season when our engine suddenly stopped. Instead of waiting for repairs where we had no protection from the storms, we decided to learn to sail! By completing the 100 nm with no engine. What could go wrong?
We are Hairo, Danielle, and 7 rescue dogs, the Pawed Crew, and we are traveling the world! We started in a van and drove from Costa Rica, through Nicaragua and Honduras and when we got to Guatemala we bought the sailboat of our dreams! Now, we a roaming the Caribbean on our 38’ Contest sailboat, “Isla”. After a great season in the Bay Islands of Honduras it is time to get back to the Rio Dulce of Guatemala and figure out why our engine failed; so in order to get back I guess we better learn to sail, baptism by wind style.
