    Hi, thanks for the great review! It made my get one of those D100s a view years ago. Now I'm still very happy with the results. The sound is great, it's easy to use, very portable, still looks (almost) like new, even I used it a lot. Batteries really work for a long time, which is also a big plus when doing field recordings.

    Seems like a great piece of kit. I realize a lot of people lament no XLR and that could be a deal breaker for many already invested in quality recording gear.
    For somebody like myself, this Sony could be a perfect solution as I don't have any other gear so this seems like an all-in-one portable solution that can legitimately deliver high quality.
    What is the stand you were using? That little tripod seems the perfect compliment for this little guy.

    • @RRivesNYC

      The stand we used is the Manfrotto 209 Tabletop Tripod with Manfrotto 492 Micro Ball Head. B&H sells them together as a kit. Thanks for watching!

    As always just an awesome review Rob, I think it would be amazing if Sony made a unit of this quality with XLR but saying that my Sony PCM-M10 has been incredible, I'm a big fan of it's omni mics over the X/Y configured mics most handhelds have but this would be nice to have and the recordings here you've captured sound incredible, thanks!

  • @bottejellema

    Nice, but why use a low cut filter with this recording? If there's too much low noise, you can eq that in post. Now all your low frequencies weren't even captured, lost forever. I've been using the D50 on a daily base as a reporter, and I never use low cut. To me it seems like a thing of the past...
    The D50 is the best machine I've ever used, by the way, and look forward to using the D100!

    Once again the best reviews in the business! It would be a quick buy for me if it had XLR's but I just can't make myself pay for Sony's expensive adapter.

    How can I avoid unwanted mic touching sounds while recording? I started doing field recording and when ever I hold the recorder in my hands and move a finger slightly I get that annoying sound. How do you hold a recorder properly? Thank you so much.

    Time to upgrade my sound recording equipment...Been waiting for a new Sony for a long time. I also like Zoom, and the recording is arguably as good, but the built quality is not that great, and the mics tend to break-off very easily.
    Another winner for Sony.
    Cheers.

    Hi, this was a very nice overview of the device but could you be kind enough to address some specifics about the D100? And I apologise if I'm asking a stupid questions. I'm a newbie to audio recording.
    #1 Do the mic and line inputs support stereo signals?
    #2 Can I use both of those inputs at the same time?
    #3 And do the built-in mics work after I plugin external mics to those inputs?
    Thanks

    • @BandH
      @BandH  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the mic and line inputs both support stereo signals. Line or Mic input must be chosen. Both inputs may not be used simultaneously. Choose either the built-in mics or external mics. >Mark

    Thanks for the clear overview. The D100 is double the price of the previous model (D50) and they still haven't added XLR inputs. I have no idea what Sony are thinking. DSD and SBM are not going to sell this unit against the competition.

      This is an audio recorder only. Perhaps you are looking for a device like this?
      Designed for both music and video creators, the Zoom Q8 Handy Video Recorder combines HD video recording with Zoom's high-quality audio capture technology. It features a wide-angle 160° lens to capture the entire scene or stage, and records beyond Full HD resolution video up to 2304x1296 at 30 fps. On the audio side, the Q8 records up to 24-bit/96 kHz audio and inherits the interchangeable microphone system of Zoom's H5 and H6 recorders, making it compatible with a variety of optional mic capsules. Included with the Q8 is a 120° X/Y stereo condenser microphone capsule well-suited to capturing live events, concerts, or videos of yourself playing with studio-quality sound. The Q8 also features dual XLR/TRS inputs for inputting professional microphone and line-level sources, giving you up to four simultaneous channels of audio when combined with the X/Y mic capsule. bhpho.to/2oX68MX >Mark

      In my opinion the recording quality of the SONY is every bit as good and possibly better than the Nagra SD. Sony also offers 32GB of internal memory and longer battery life. Nagra offers a very compact form factor which may appeal to you. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com. Mark S.

    • @BandH
      @BandH  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The PCM D100 has been engineered to offer ultra high resolution recording via its 32-bit D/A converters:
      DSD (dsf): 2.8224 MHz
      WAV: 192, 176.4 kHz 24-bit, 96, 88.2, 48, 44.1 kHz 24 or 16-bit
      The overall construction is more robust with an all metal body and superior X-Y multi-position condenser mics. A wireless IR remote control and a furry winscreen are also included.

      Like the D50 and most Sony products. The DAC's used are very cold and shrill. The D100 is just going to exacerbate this problem with high res audio. The Zoom's and Tascam's sound better and have XLR's and are half the price. Sony needs to get with the program and stop loving the smell of their own farts. Because this recorder is a terrible value for the money at this price point.

      Very sorry for your dissatisfaction. You bought this Swann DVR with cameras on Jan 21st. The manufacturer subsequently discontinued it; the retailer did not. The reason it is not eligible for return is that our return policy is 30 days and you asked about returning it on June 8th. +Alejandro Romero keep in mind the microphones are really good quality and its a recorder too so if you were to buy lets say the Rode NT4 (500$) and a 300$ recorder you wouldnt get the same amount of quality due to a 300$ recorders preamps and also wouldnt be as portable. i think this is a great product and costs 720$ here so i think thats great.

      I know right? That's silly of Soney. It's a pretty good recorder though as you hear in their out dors demo. Also I've heard more of it since my friend Neal Ewers has 1. Verry good but yeah the XLR thing. So much for using an NT1-A matched pare on it. Unless there's such a thing as a stereo male ended cable with 2 mono female ends that you could connect to the ends of cables comeing out of power suplies and into this. Because this of course doesn't have Phantum.

    • @DudeMeToo
      @DudeMeToo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seriously man, know what you're recording. This unit is meant for portability and field recording when you need the best possible recorder, and in that environment and conditions, the d100 absolutely delivers. If you need to plug an xlr deal with cables, a mic, and a mic stand then you're probably not as concerned with portability or recording in the field so much. Not that it can't be done, but when recording alone it just becomes more of a hassle, hence where the D100 shines.

      Sony PCM-D100 vs Tascam DR-100MKIII

    • @TVperson1
      @TVperson1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's more of a recorder for audiophiles than a tool for professionals. Well... a toy for Sony fans like me, if you like Sony's old gear like the WM-D6C, DAT walkman's, HiMD, this is sort of the modern day version of that. It has optical in and out, it is the only portable recorder that does DSD, it's also a high end audio player. Remember that Zooms don't have Spdif in /out or DSD.
      But there's always the Tascam DR100 MKIII which is also gives you coax Spdif in put with XLR pors, but no DSD or digital out. Digital in is really useful for coming out of a digital mixer, computer, or DAT player for archive transfers.

    02:15 - What does 100db ration setting?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A signal-to-noise ratio (SNR or S/N) compares a level of signal power to a level of noise power. It is most often expressed as a measurement of decibels (dB). Higher numbers generally mean a better specification, since there is more useful information (the signal) than there is unwanted data (the noise).
      When an audio component lists a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 dB, it means that the level of the audio signal is 100 dB higher than the level of the noise. A signal-to-noise ratio specification of 100 dB is considerably better than one that is 70 dB (or less). >Mark

    Basically Sony said... Hhmm... Lets throw some decent converters in a recorder that can record only through fixed mics making it a useless tool in places with a lot of noise(talking people, wind, reverb happy rooms etc.) and then lets charge the same as most mid-ranged multitrack field recorders. Recorders that have both Hi-Rez Audio and XLR/Jack inputs for the use of MICROPHONES for tracking in the NOISY Field. Oh and BTW Sony if you ever see this... If any one wants Hi-Rez audio, they can buy a small thing called AN AUDIO INTERFACE or a DEDICATED AD/DA CONVERTER. So yeah... Screw Sony who also uses that money to support things Like A.c.t.a. and before anyone jumps on me with hate. Yes I've worked with it and the the build quality is the only thing that is better than the rest on the market the sound is as good as the the half priced competitors and not better. and fr those of you who want prestige sound remember this. Pristine sound can be captured 90% of the time only in studios, not in fields.

    • @bottejellema
      @bottejellema 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Carp Tiberiu But then there are the (radio) reporters, that are 90 % of the time outside of the studio, who are very happy with a portable device like this. Also, you can use a Sennheiser MD46 with this recorder, when you're in a place with too much noise for the fixed mics. It's not the connector that makes the sound; I'm perfectly happy with mini jack. This thing definitely sounds better than anything else in the market. Don't say it's useless just because it may be not for you.

    • @tibi1687
      @tibi1687 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are still missing my point. I'm not talking about this product being good in a certain situation or being good for a certain type of users. I am talking about it being good at everything it should be used for in that price range. It is a 600 euro option. At 600 euros they should have included some XLR connectors. And also about that thing you said about the sound not being made by the connector. It has pretty much all to do with the connector. A mini jack connection has the lowest quality of all audio connections, simply because of the low electrical signal that it can handle. Thats why XLR and 1/4 jack connections are used as standard connections with full sized cables. The bigger and the better quality cable, the better the sound quality. The best comparison is with a car. The converters are the engine and the car is the recorder. Try fitting a big 500+ HP V10 engine in a crappy little VW Polo versus putting it in a Corvette with dedicated weight distribution and suspension and all the necessary parts to handle the power.

    • @bottejellema
      @bottejellema 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I would like the quality of Nagra high end stuf for 600 euro's and in this size. But that is not going to happen in this world. For 600 euro's you can get a very good Sony recorder, that does the job better (intern mics and better s/n) than the competition. I agree about the bigger connection/ bigger cable point you're making. But my 60cm xlr-to-mini-jack cable is what I need as a reporter and it's more than good enough. I think the car comparison is a bit of a sophism, since this is not the relative difference we're talking about with connectors. The s/n of the recorder, so the a/d's, and the mic you use, make the sound. Agreed, you can break it with lousy cables and connectors. But it is 2015, it's all much better than it used to be. I won't disqualify a recorder for not having XLR, seen the purpose of this Sony.
