    I found this in 2023, end of summer, wondering at my lack of knowledge on the blueberry bush I bought. This was a perfect video to get started. 8 minutes for a brief foundation for pruning. Kudos, good sir.

    When is the best time of year/season to prune the branches.?
    In Australia we are in Autumn (Fall), and my husband pruned my blueberries tree/ bush just to the main trunks.
    And now I’m panicking, and with great anticipations, I’m waiting to see if that was a good choice.

    • @NicksAllotmentDiary
      @NicksAllotmentDiary  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi. You normally cut back blueberries in the winter when the bush is dormant. I’d say if he’s cut the branches back to the main trunk then you’ll not get any fruit next year. New growth will appear in spring but that won’t fruit until the following summer. Sorry for the bad news. Take care. Nick

    I've read that I should prune new blueberries bushes immediately after planting, even if they've already begun to flower. Should I follow these same pruning protocols for a young plant? (Obviously there won't be much old or dead wood yet.)

    • @NicksAllotmentDiary
      @NicksAllotmentDiary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. I wouldn’t do that with a small new blueberry bush. If you prune new wood and cut off the flowering part then you’ll get no fruit at all that year. I’d wait until the bush is a bit bigger before giving it it’s first pruning. Take care. Nick

    • @NicksAllotmentDiary
      @NicksAllotmentDiary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mert. I’ve just checked and it is an early to mid season variety so in the UK would fruit from Mid July. If no leaves and flowers are developing try scratching away some bark to see if it’s alive as it should be green or red but not dry and brown. Take care. Nick

    Do you have any advice for a blueberry bush that has gone dormant? How do I get it to "leaf out" again?

    • @NicksAllotmentDiary
      @NicksAllotmentDiary  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carl. When you say has gone dormant do you mean it’s lost all it’s leaves ? A blueberry bush that loses all leaves in summer has probably dried out too much. It may recover and grow leaves next spring as long as all the stems haven’t died off. Take care. Nick

    • @carlnikolov
      @carlnikolov 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NicksAllotmentDiary Thanks for your response, yes it has some new buds however most are dried up and not coming out at all, I still haven't seen one leaf come from any of the new buds however. how can you tell if the plant is in fact dead? or just.. trying to recover?

    • @NicksAllotmentDiary
      @NicksAllotmentDiary  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carlnikolov I’d check one of the new stems from last year ( usually red or green rather than dark and woody). Scrape a little off the surface of the stem with a knife. If just below the surface it’s green and not brittle then the plant is living. If the stems are brittle and dried out then it has probably died. If it has died check the roots to see if they have been gnawed away by a pest. Take care. Nick
