It was a happy ending. With Utena’s show of true love/ friendship Anthy managed to free herself in the end. And so did Utena. It was beautiful, the entire soundtrack to this show is beautiful
It was good Utena wasn’t Anthy’s prince. Anthy needed to save herself, which she did in the end, after Utena’s show of love. And Utena needed to be released from playing the stereotypical “prince” or “girl”. She just wanted to be happy and she wanted Anthy to be happy too. And in the end, they both got to choose their own destinies. Utena just wanted to show Anthy that she truly loved her, regardless of whether Anthy was the Rose Bride or if Utena was a prince/girl/duelist.
@@abbykagari1972 even as a prince, utena wouldnt have been able to save her. she cant force anthy to join the revolution, rather anthy must discover that for herself. and to be a prince is to perpetuate principals built on disproportionate displays of power, where a ‘prince’ takes agency over ‘princesses’ in order to save them, leaving princesses unable to save themselves, nor to establish their own place in this world. the princess was made to enhance the glory of the prince, after all. but princesses are individuals, as much as princes are. and yet their agency cannot coexist, and so in the truth of it all, the prince role falls through. under its innocent guise of virtue, it is a play of power meant to keep women under submission and men in the spotlight. to start a revolution, one must deconstruct the lies they have been fed, the false ideals, and through it, find their true selves. to achieve revolution, they must fight to gain that self. but that is a journey that one must go through alone, which is why being a prince would have never done anthy any good. in fact, it wouldve made things worse because she would be feeding into the idea that anthy is only but a doll meant to follow another’s order. and it would only cloud her from what she wanted even more. by demonstrating that utena genuinely cared for anthy, utena was able to give anthy the power (or sense of self-esteem/self-worth) and support for anthy to begin to think for herself.

It wasn't a false ideal, it was just a different conception of how a prince should act than the failed and corrupted princes she had to face along the way. Utena's quest to help free Anthy succeeded. Utena's salvation of Anthy took the form of genuinely caring for her and showing her new possibilities of how to live and love. What is the use in a message that says that intentionally attempting to liberate other women from an abusive system is itself patriarchal dominance, that we must all struggle individually and liberate ourselves? That's nonsense intended to keep us from each other.
Interesting tidbit to celebrate 25 years of Utena: first 30 seconds resemble legendary theme from C64 game The Great Gianna Sisters by Chris Huelsbeck. The next part sounds like a variation on Fushigi no Umi no Nadia, song Almighty Battleship New Nautilus.

It sounds similar to a track called PASSIONATE ( パッショネイト). It's the 18th track on the 1st volume of the soundtrack I think. Hope that helps :)
