    Ps. I deliberate pronounce the Russian words "Verkhovny" and "Glavnokomanduyeshy" with an English accent for clarity.

    I am from the Baltics and even though i was a child i still remember when soviet union suddenly collapsed. We listened to the radio and just could not believe it. The day before even it seemed utterly impossible that this behemoth could just collapse like that and so quickly. So as unlikely it would seem I am kinda hoping history will repeat it this time and one day i can wake up and this nightmare will be over. Lots of love to you and all the Ukrainian boys.

      There is a misconception about the reality of collapsing Soviet Union. First, the Union went bankrupt due to huge corruption and stealing government money, introduced by Breshnew, spread by the years all over and tickling down.Gorbatshev realized that this is a devastating threat, together with diminishing revenues of oil sales and bleeded out all other Warshaw Pact countries by Russia. But then the top corrupted officials had a plan to end up Gorbatshevs Perestroika and Glasnost just by ending Soviet Union, so they may carry on their stealing.

      I wasn't even alive, but I can imagine the "mood" when listening to Кончится лето/Summer is ending by KINO. What an event it must've been, especially in the Baltic countries. You guys basically got the ball rolling, after which the Russians made every possible mistake. Must've been a scary and uncertain moment when the 1991 august coup happened. Glad it ended the way it did, even though Yeltsin put Russia on the wrong path... again.

      @@hasselnttper3730: Yeltsin really needed a lot of help from the West (particularly from the US) to put Russia on the right path. For example, the US could have provided millions of daily food rations to keep the Soviet population fed until they got their new commercial economy running, and money to keep the education and medical systems running. The Western European countries should have helped with organising local government and anti-corruption measures.
      Without help, it was perhaps inevitable that Russia would become as corrupt as South Africa and fall back into authoritarianism.

    It makes sense that Gerasimov is ''the top guy'' because he is the top scapegoat. There always needs to be someone between putler and failure or judgement. putler can never be responsible or to blame for the ills of ruzzia.

      Gerasimov has no way to be called “Verkhovny” as it’s translated not “top guy” but “Supreme” and he has nothing like that in any of his titles. He’s the head of the general staff but not supreme (commander) of anything. Basically the only guy who may be called “Verkhovny” in Russia these days is Putin.

We need neither gamification of Ukraine nor its fetishization as theater. Equally, we do not want to get too academic about the war. The difference is that "OTstavka" translates as resignation, while stavka roughly translates as headquarters, that was the name of the main executive body in the USSR during WW2 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stavka_of_the_Supreme_High_Command ), and what he says next kinda proves hes talking bout some drastic WW2 style decisions, and not about resignation of Putin or even Gerasimov, unfortunately

I recognize that waterfall is DESIGNED to elicit just such a response; you either spend way more energy responding to each untruth individually than the purveyor of untruth did (while giving each untruth if not credibility, at least oxygen by responding to it at all AND ceding the narrative), or you shut down and the purveyor of untruth gets the last word. I watched Nebenzya do this during his riposte at yesterday's meeting of the UN Security Council, and I watched myself respond in my usual way. Thanks for the clarity here. I saw this translation but when it's from a channel dedicated to show the worst of any particular side, I'm always skeptical when I can't translate things for myself. If Solovyov was calling for Putins resignation that would've been a huge deal.

    Hello Vlad. A striped shirt? You'll start a fashion trend!
    Thank you for this message. I try to have a very varied selection of news sources so I am not caught in a trap/echo chamber. I am watching the American election. I am watching what is happening in South America. Same with Africa and Asia etc. The problem, I feel, with statements coming out of Russia is that their are layers to the language that is so often used. Most political speech is seldom absolutely straightforward if it is via a government source. This applies double to the Kremlin.

    I LOVE LOVE LOVE your occasional zingers at the foibles of the West! A few days ago it was the security blanket (read: rose-colored blindfold) that is Netflix and today it's Frappuccinos in Vancover!
    My parochial experience compels my bias to recognize such rife farcical thinking within my own surroundings (America), with no awareness if there are such ignorant and self-satisfied cultures elsewhere on the globe; perhaps it's yet another example of late-stage American exceptionalism, or just a congenital weakness in the human species, once they've reached a certain level of comfort and security. (someone should update Maslov to include a healthy dash of the Peter Principle!)
    I admire your work to prepare minds for the next decade or two of critically needed critical thinking, and I agree that such capacity is the first line of defense against the "Meanies", as well as a Press that is fully complicit in their deceptions.
    I am grateful for your more philosophical approach to present day dangers and solutions, rather than the terrain in which I usually find myself, ranging from H.L. Mencken to George Carlin.
    Keep up the GREAT WORK!!!

Remember when "we" defeated nazism? exactly. that wasnt us! thats the fucking point. It was NOT us. Why would he be relieved of going there? he's a top guy in the country's diplomatic branch, which is foreign ministry affairs. Fun fact - he wants to get off Putin's administration train for a decade now - he asks his boss to have him resigned every year since 2014, gets rejected every time. The irony is that he would totally resign himself, but he just can't. lol.

      @NorthonBruce หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In fact he proposed to create "stavka", the commander in chief's war room, like ones that were created during existential wars of the past, but since the word was following the "a" sound of the previous word "nuzhna stavka verkhovnogo" (war room of Supreme commander in chief is needed) it could be misheard as "nuzhna otstavka verkhovnogo" (resignation of Supreme commander in chief is needed). "Verkhovnogo" (supreme's) is the short for supreme commander in chief, first word of the name of the job. This word shows exactly that no other than the president is addressed. Anyways, it's meaningless casual propaganda by itself, but what's relevant is that people got triggered by alternative intepretation, this is peculiar.
