  • An insulation resistance tester supplies “nondestructive” DC voltage to the windings and insulation points of a motor to measure the current leakage rate.

    I'd like to make a correction. Anything less than 1 Megaohm is considered a failure, while in reality, I've seen motors run with less than that. 50 Megaohms is a very good reading.

    What is acceptable value insulation resistance minimum in compressor

    I have always tested motor windings via ohm it out, either by terminal to terminal or terminal to ground.
    3 ph motors should be equal ohms reading if normal, or tested via terminal to ground.
    Single phase motors.
    Ohm out between terminal to terminal first.
    Good windings should like example: R to S =9 ohms
    R to C = 3 ohms and S to C = 6 ohms mean normal.
    Also do the same with 3 phase by terminal ground. If shorted to ground the ohm meter will read something.

      Insulation tester tests winding insulation by applying DC voltage through the winding & Multimeter measures the resistance of winding. Insulation tester gives an accurate and fast measurement to verify the condition of insulation.

      There's 2 seperate ways to check a motor. Using a normal multimeter that only outputs a few volts and a mega ohm meter that can output 1000v. The higher voltage will check if the insulation is cracked anywhere and leaking power to ground. It can detect shorts through bad refrigerant full of acids inside the compressor.

    You should measure insulation with double voltage of operational voltage.

      So there's a single phase 220 compressor I should be testing at 500 V.

    Would u test between N & L on a motor or just phases? And phases & Earth

    Is this compressor what is acceptable resistance value good and bad

    Would one of you you 2 people at least give the same information you tested the same voltage or test it at double the voltage ratedV

    I'm glad that someone has enough knowledge to not use a Supco merger on a Copeland Scroll compressor. People need to read Copelands ligature about megging their scroll compressors. I'm sure there have been many of the Copeland scroll compressors that were still good but were replaced by using the Supco meggers.

      I have the Supco Megger. I don’t trust that thing. Isn’t it only good for like small fan motors/ small reach in compressors ?

      @@hvacwilly6037 Supco Meggers are ok for what you said, for reciprocating compressors but for scroll's I would not use them. For some reason they have made them that they will not read low enough. I've condemned a couple Copeland compressors when the Supco merger said that it was bad, until I read the Copeland literature on their scroll compressors. What I use is a cheap $45.00 Chinese merger I got off of Amazon. They are as accurate as a Fluke merger, just don't trust the voltage readings. I've been using one for about 8 years and it has been accurate so far.

    Please, can i do the same test with Fluke 115 multimeter?

    • @KINGPAFA
      @KINGPAFA ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, with a multimeter, you could only test to see if the compressor is grounded or not! An insulation tester will test the condition of the insulation on windings, whether it is good or bad or on its way out!

    Don't think your getting on the conductors good. The holes where the screws go in are not the conductors, it's the metal tabs around them. Also Copeland doesn't recommend to meg ohm their scroll compressors. Something about the windings being too close to the shell.

    • @globalheatingcooling
      @globalheatingcooling  ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a very good connection and the holes that where screws go in are conductors as well! An insulation tester measures the resistance of the windings! There is no such thing that you can't use an insulation tester on Copeland Scroll Compressors!
