LEGO Technic 42154 Ford GT detailed building review - smaller means better?

  • The LEGO Technic 42154 2022 Ford GT is the first set of the March 2023 wave I review on the channel. It is smaller than the usual branded 1:10 scale Technic cars but on paper it has all of their features and even more, can it be the winning combination?

As you pointed out I made a building mistake, there should be an additional pin holding the 2 main assemblies together at 5:43, so it's not the cross axle only. Still, a single pin is not the safest connection in my book so I think a different building sequence would have been better.

@@PallesWorld6309 street date with these sets is not as strict as with some major releases. If something is only sold by LEGO initially then you won't find those sets on shelves earlier, but Technic, City, Speed Champions etc. frequently appear sooner in other shops than TLG's own release date.

Just finished building this set (that was a gift for Christmas), and I'm stunned by those doors! A really glamorous feature! Having built the 488 GTE last year, I must say that this was just as thrilling. Prehaps more so! To anyone watching this review wondering whether or not to purchase this set, do yourself a favour and get it immediately! Yes, technic can be annoying, but that feeling of accomplishment at the end is priceless. This video is a credit to the set and has given it the spotlight it deserves. Happy building!

A brilliant set. Lots of crazy angles made in weird ways, that match perfectly with other strange assemblies to amazing effect. The designers must have spent ages working these out. An economy of parts usage while providing lots of detailed beauty and functionality. This is perhaps the "speed champions" of technic. We need more like this.

  • @pewpewdragon4483

Looks like a great build overall, the 1/12 scale seems ideal in my non-technic fan opinion. Unfortunate for collectors though for the lack of consistent scaling.

  • @johnnewell5025

One of the better Technic vehicles, this one checks a lot of boxes: build process, technical design, finished appearance, functionality, color, and value. Everyone involved should congratulate themselves, and then get to work on more models like this. I think the scale is both pleasing (in this model) and promising (for future models) so I'd like to see more in this scale.

Looks like a nice set overall. 1/12 scale allows for just as much detail and mechanical functions as the bigger 1/10 scale cars but at a much lower pricetag. Nice of the designer to make the chassis mostly black/grey to accomodate MOC builders too.
But Lego really needs to sort out their sticker sheet packaging. Sets like this and the 10304 Camaro have stickers loose in the box, while similarly priced sets like Thor's Hammer and the Galaxy Explorer have no stickers at all yet the instructions were still wrapped in plastic bags.

I'm all for this scale, and functionality moving forward. Looks fantastic beside the Ford Raptor. Don't mind a bit of a challenge, however the troubleshooting involved to build this is somewhat intimidating as I've never been great at technical models. Definitely on the pick up list though because despite some inaccuracies it's a structurally dense model that's looks fairly complete from all angles unlike a lot of the larger scale models of similar piece count like the Ferrari or even Rally car from a number of years back. Definitely excited to see the bat bike, and fire plane, and commentary.

Dang that actual size comparison between the Ford with the Ferrari Corse and Porsche RSR is glaring...further evidence of "shrinkflation"...going from apx. 1:10 to 1:12/1:13...might be more appropriately placed alongside The Batmobile for the F&F Dom's Charger :)

Racing Brick, that new "double CVD joint" is called a dog bone! These are often used in vehicles (usually not cars) on the rear axle when it's only spring and driven, and not steered. For steered and driven axles, CVD driveshafts are used. Dogbones are also common in RC vehicles. Just wanted to shed some light on this unique piece, love the channel!

I got it as my first technic set and the only lego set I've built other than a rocket MOC since I was a kid, and it was awesome, I only made one mistake where I thought I was missing parts but had done a step incorrectly. My biggest complaint is the stickers, I used a very fine knife to aid in placing the stickers and I did a good job, but it would be really nice if they included a backup sticker sheet in case you mess up. And I will probably sell this set at some point since I'm not a collector, so an extra sticker sheet would help with that.

I finally got a chance to buy and build this kit. I love the Ford GT so I had the same criticisms as most people about the overall look being a bit off. The curves of the real car are completely lost. But my main problem is the silly gear sticking out the roof for steering. They could of have engineered a way for the steering wheel to actually turn the front wheels.

This build wasn’t necessarily difficult, it’s more like the instructions were lacking in showing where and how to connect certain sections. It’s not like the Lego app where you can move the model around and see it from another angle to get a better idea of what to connect where. These instructions felt like they either could have used better angles or added an extra picture with arrows pointing to the connecting points. Instead it just shows the piece connected on the model, you then have to find out what pins/axels went into where before attaching it and normally that wouldn’t be a problem but with this set it could have definitely benefited from an extra little red circle or something! But other than that this was an amazing build. 9/10 final build and 9.5/10 building process. Super engaging, not repetitive, and definitely a challenge but a doable challenge. Great job Lego.

Thank you very much for the insights from the designer's perspective! Interesting to hear that he tried his best to limit the color pallette for the sake of reusability even though the set doesn't have an official B-model.
Also interesting that this is the second time this year that Lego mis-spelled an (ex-)employee's name in an instruction booklet. One is inclined to theorize that this is a punishment for the designers' rebellion against the marketing department ;)
Conspiracies aside, this model is a wonderful piece of Technic engineering and I hope the designers (get to) keep up their great work!

I prefer the previous generation Ford GT but I think this looks very good. Will probably get it and try to modify and paint the rims to make them more realistic, and add LEDs to it

I´m fully with you on this.
I.m a little Disapointed myself that this is the 2020 Model and not the Older and in my Opinion the "Real Deal" Model and the One that everybody Knows.
Sometimes i wonder how these Manufactures think when they think they know what people want..I´m going as you to try to moc this one and see if it´s possible to make it "Older" and for example built it different at the rear fender..

Also wanted to add, when I bought this set. My sticker sheet has folds on it and the instruction manual has a big crease in the top right. Called support and they sent me a new instruction manual

Yes !! Ford GT is awesome !! I like the 2005 model but 2022 model is actually pretty great. I can see it be more fitting for this Technic scale.

I'm on the fence about the transparent engine pieces, imo they shouldve added both transparent and opaque to give people a choice, i want it as a display piece so you won't see the pistons moving

i really hope they make a speed champions double set from the 1966 le mans cause they mentioned it on the instructions so i feel like its possible(little out of topic but anyway)

Great review again! I'm wondering if you could lower the suspension (like the Ferrari 488 GTE) with one hole. I guess you can do that with the back of the car but the front solution looks a bit tricky.

Thanks! Honestly I don't think lowering the suspension would make it look much better, would make the gap on top disappear but it'll look weird with the same gaps on the sides of the wheel. Besides that moving around suspension parts is way less trivial here than on the Ferrari.

Great Car to build, but needs some time invested. Overall, best Lego Technic car for this price. Sadly, steering wheel isn't "connected " to the wheels, small knob on the top compensates for that.

I love this set. I actually watched Ford vs Ferrari while building this. But that brown axle at the top got me really confused and I have no clue what it does; other than it MIGHT connect to the turning. It would be great if someone gave me some advice about that 😁
