Wow! To see this! I was a young unit clerk on duty Game 7 night at St. Luke's Hospital ER Trauma Ctr. FUMING as duty locked me to desk for phones while every other human was crowding the waiting room TVs for the high-drama last innings. NO patients. Can overhear TV blasting; docs, techs, everybody there except me... and hey, a patient? John Tudor for stitches after punching that electric fan. Not place for the story; sorry; rare flashback. He was FUMING WORSE! Ooooboy! Surrounded by GO ROYALS posters didn't help, one on post right by his rolling stretcher. Private docs were prepping; just me and him when a roar from the waiting room: "AND THE ROYALS WIN THE SERIES!" Was literally 5 feet away, lowering self under desk counter as he exploded. Always wanted to ask him if he ever noticed the top of my trembling head. Likely not.
This was the first time in nearly 40 years that I watched every World Series game of the '85 Series. Thank you Stephen Baseball Archives. The Cardinals' loss was a haunting moment in my childhood, but that Series taught me how to appreciate baseball more. When Darryl Motley hit that home run, I immediately ran to my mother's room crying because the Cardinals were losing. My mom was unsympathetic. She told me the Cardinals can't be winning all of the time, so I needed to buckle down and accept it. I later went back to the living room and watched the rest of the game -- which included the explosion from Andujar and Herzog -- with dignity. Thank you mom, RIP.
I was at this game in the upper deck - it really was almost anti-climatic as I had watched the wild ending to Game 6 in my Air Force Base dorm room the night before. I do remember the crowd roar and "the wave"(the whole stadium shook)when just a year before Sparky Anderson said KC crowd couldn't do the wave correctly like they supposedly did in Detroit. Funny, Sparky was doing radio color commentary this night, I wondered if he said anything about it. This ended 10 years of bad postseason luck for the Royals. What got them over the hump was the young pitching, StL simply could not hit throughout all 7 games. Conversely, KC's offense was definitely a shadow of what it had been in the late 70's/early 80's. KCR was lucky to have Sundberg at catcher, he was always very solid and dependable and his triple AT Toronto sent KC to this world series. This game basically ended the winning era of KC(1975-1985)although we almost made the playoffs in 1987, KC didn't go to the playoffs for 29 years. Amazing that both KC and St. Louis were in so many world series from 1980-1987. KC was in 1980, 1985 - StL was in 1982, 1985, and 1987.
I think St. Louis gave a strong hint that Andujar was gone next year during this game. Having a 21 game winner pitch in a 10-0 blowout last game of the season was a major slap in the face.
I was just thinking why didn't Andujar start Game 7 instead of John Tudor? Granted, I don't know for sure who was considered the ace of the Cardinals' pitching staff in 1985. Tudor won 21 games (which is miraculous in itself, when you take into consideration that he started the season 1-7) while Andujar too, won 21 games in 1985. And the year prior, Andujar won 20 games and had previously started Game 7 of the 1982 World Series for the Cardinals.
Herzog didn't have confidence in Andujar late in the year and he didn't match up well against Saberhagan in game 3. But he prob still should have.. Tudor had seen them twice and gone deep and they were bound to time him up eventually
The Cardiac Royals came through again! Just as what they did to Toronto in the ALCS, they challenged the Cardinals, played 14 playoff games, a two-round record, and "never say die" in winning the title. After 17 seasons, the first title.
I watched that entire series. Tudor was way overconfident as was the entire team. The Royals played like any other team would have, in just playing their best each game. Once they took game 6 (Denkinger game) they had the Cards in that zone of uncertainty. The Cards were still miffed about the blown call and the loss, Denkinger was the home plate umpire in Game 7. Tudor choked (pitched on 3 days rest) as well as the rest of the team. Andujar (bless his soul) well....he was Joaquin, being Joaquin. Great series and one to remember.
On the road, Saberhagen on the mound, Game 6 still fresh in their minds, and Denkinger calling the balls and strikes. The Cardinals had literally zero chance of winning this game.
History shows that though the Dekinger missed call at first was a big one - it was only the first out - Clark's misplay of Balboni's pop foul was much bigger, allowing Balboni to go on to single. No the difference in this World Series was the difference between KC's superstars Brett and Brett vs the Cards Tudor and Ozzie.
I think this was the ONLY game I remember BOTH the manager AND a player were DISQUALIFIED from the game ON THE SAME PLAY! (Andujar drew a 20 game suspension at the start of the 1986 season. He died at 62 in 2015 from diabetic complications.)
As he displayed a tirade that could be heard all the way to Oakland. He'd be dealt there two months later and Tim McCarver proved prophetic. Andujar never recovered from this game and a two month slump for him after the 17-4 start.
I won't know if I was in Whitey Herzog's shoes, whether or not it was good idea to bring Joaquin Andujar in. Andujar with all due respect, had a bit of a reputation already for being something of a hothead or loose canon. There was an incident during Game 7 of the 1982 World Series against Milwaukee, where Andujar nearly came to blows with Jim Gantner after Gantner supposedly called him a "hot dog".
Andujar and Tudor didn't play in game 6, so game 6 is no excuse for this debacle. Whitey wanted this series so bad he could taste it since he still had a grudge against Royals owner Ewing Kauffman for firing him, and it was pretty obvious early on the Cards were smug throughout, and it was also obvious Whitey was playing by emotions and not sense. Game 7 was a death by 1000 cuts, and by the time Whitey got ejected, he wanted to get out of there, so he got ejected deliberately. I think this series, how unprepared the Cards were for the Royals comeback -remember the Series went back to KC because the Cards lost 2 out of 3 at home, so they were entering game 6 cold and stayed cold through game 7-is stunning and Whitey deserves some blame for that. Few people remember the '85 Series the cards set the World Series record for lowest team batting average, win or lose. And they were right, Andujar was done. Even when Herzog got ejected and Andujar was yelling to Porter, for some reason, Porter walks right past his pitcher, Andujar. Rewind it if you like but instead of getting between the ump and Andujar he moved out of the way. I can't fathom a good reason for doing that.
@@TMC1982Part2People like to conveniently forget that Frank White was safe at second in the same game. Would have scored on the single. Orta being safe had no impact on the score, and they just had a meltdown. The Royals overcame the blown call, the Cardinals didn’t.
Why was Joaquin Andujar still in the game after his initial blow up at Don Denkinger? Why was Whitey Herzog ejected before Andjuar? I mean, in my mind, Andjuar should've been thrown out of the game the moment that he started gesturing and walking towards Denkinger.
