  • In this video we are using some 4000 year old technology and DIY building Ollas (pronounced Oyas) This is an ancient method of watering your plants using clay permeable terracotta pots. In this video I show you how easy it is to build them - but we also add a youtube first (we believe!).

Great ideas!!! Your helpers really did their jobs, eh! Thanks! I'll (try to) remember these ideas if I should ever need them! Thank God, we get plenty of rain, and hubby waters the garden every evening.

I didn't appreciate untill recently what a huge blessing it is having unlimited water supply. You can still use this method of watering aswell if you want too. The helpers are always gorgeous honestly. Thanks for the comment really appreciated!

@@TheSmartGardenRomYenHouse it was the "4000 YEARS OLD"... that caught my eye when your video just slid across my feed. As I am a Bible student (I dare not say scholar), those words always catch me. Yours was a very interesting video. Thanks for sharing! I thank God, though, that we have gotten .... (and i'm afraid to say this - lest I curse us) our share of rain for the season!

Donno, but all those I've seen are three gallon jars with a long neck and flaring opening. People used these to water gardens in the Sonoran Desert for long ages. Swales and dams were common as well. niio

Mateeeee. This is awesome. Love these ideas.
Just wondering if it's worth soaking tye pots in the little pond first to soak it through? Maybe help speed up the process?
Maybe cap on the end of the depth indicator. Heavey rain might fill it?
Anyway awesome mate and a great solution for people with smaller gardens etc.. who are going on holiday or away.
    Keep em coming mate. Awesome.

Great video Matt! I think that the way you are trying different methods shows your innovation and creativity to overcome the biggest challenge you have. The level indicator is terrific! Talk soon!

I would use clay to "glue" the terracotta pieces together. Can be bought in most gardencenters.

Hi Ken, @kenaar I agree that would be a more sustainable solution - I will try that in the future. Many thanks for your comment.

@@TheSmartGardenRomYenHouseterracotta pots about that size by me in Louisiana USA would be near $10 for each pot and the bottoms would cost about the same! Also I have never seen an terracotta pots shaped just like yours. Ours all have straight angled sides.

Why not seal the olla with clay. Then bake it in your oven for 3 days at 150 degrees f.
