Unfortunately they show how advisers and presidents have been very poor, when dealing with Russia, after 60 years of Cold War, 20 years of Putin has been no better perhaps worse, and now, a reset button isn’t going to cut it.

But, wow Frontline, I was unequivocally dejected after watching this interview. To me it was glaringly obvious, Frontline was approbative to one opinion throughout the entire interview. But what alarmed me most, was as I continued to watch, I had an increasing sense of it being purposeful. So I have to ask, in hindsight, do you feel this interview was a work of ethical journalism? Obviously, I'm sure you know my answer but I'll stated anyway. I do not feel it was a work of ethical journalism. It is wholeheartedly my belief that if this interview was truely a work of ethical journalism, then the host would have, at bare minimum, had a few utterances demurring the answers and opinions put forth by Peter Baker. Again, I apologize if my candidness offends anyone. That is truly far from my intention. My intention is to bring awareness to the societal issues caused by not engaging in true and ethical journalism. Our country is at a precipice. If we continue to only engage with those who hold the similar opinions and never utilize critical thinking in an effort to expand discourse, then America is sure to fall. As I'm sure you are all aware, there are groups of individuals and or countries who want nothing more than to see us Americans' divided. So please, hear what I'm saying and please don't just push it to the side. If anything read it twice because what I'm saying is without a doubt of the ut most importance. I am mesmerized by this series of interviews!! I move from one to the next nonstop 😱!! So insightful, all very well educated and knowledgeable. Are you serious? Do you ever read books for more inderpendent and analysis or do you just educate yourself with the media and TV? Putin has been trying to avoid a war for years and Ukraine has been laughing in his face, ignoring his attempts for negotiations and breaking peace deals made years ago. The Ukraine government and police force are full of "actual Nazis" I don't blame Putin for ultimately declaring war on Ukraine. Ukraine is also corrupt to the core with a defiant reackless leader pushing Putin and Ukrainian people into a war.

He had no plans to conquer Ukraine IMO. Idea was to get troops into Ukraine and they drive around engaging in small conflicts crushing Ukrainian Defence Forces, get them to negotiate with an end goal of a pro Russian government there.

Baker deliberately omits to mention that Victoria Nuland admitted spending 5 billion dollars of American tax payers money fomenting regime change in Ukraine. Without that there would have been no war in Donbas and no take over of Crimea. Please get more honest people to interview for The Putin Files.

These funds are working here on the commercial basis and put money in Ukrainian businesses in order to develop, fix them (this includes full transparency, which means no black market schemes or money laundering) and potentially sell them. This is what Victoria Nuland meant saying “Since Ukraine’s independence in 1991 the United States have supported Ukrainians to build democratic skills and institutions as they promote civic participation and good governance, all of which are pre-conditions for Ukraine to achieve the European aspirations. We have invested over 5 bn dollars to assist Ukraine in these goals that will ensure a secure and prosperous democratic Ukraine”

American optimism is one of its greatest failures in assessing the contemporary future of Russia after 1989
In all fairness, the collapse of the Eastern block in 1989, and later of the Soviet Union, fueled that optimism. We should have had a more measured approach to Russia. Also we forgot that more than merely providing aid, we should have appreciated a nation's sense of honor and self respect. That said, Putin has attacked the West, to the detriment of his own country.
Senator Romney was right ! Years ago, as Putin was consolidating his absolute power, Sen. Romney said Russia was the single most dangerous threat to the democratic world.

This interview is just reminder of how Americans are obsessed with their ideas of them being bigger than big ,the tone used in the interview is telling .
Peter Baker rocks. I had no idea that he was a Russia expert. I thought he was just a White House correspondent.
Well he does make one glaring mistake, invoking the 'fake news' concept to imply that Bush had nothing to do with 'firing that reporter". The fake news turned out to be the GOP swift-boating of Rather's source materials. W was not personally of course able to fire Rather but 'his people' as Mr. Baker refers to the Putin power, absolutely pulled it off.

@@pandamandimax Rather's document was never proven to be a fake. The GOP promoted a claim about the typewriting but that was debunked later. Rather's 'crime' was not to get a second source, which among responsible journalists is the requirement for professional credibility. He was convinced by the apparent authenticity of the official letter, but that was what got questioned. Baker seems to think he got the story wrong. Nope.

Wrong about the context: reason Putin regarded collapse of the Soviet Union as a bad thing was because it meant 25 million Russians now lived in a foreign country, not because he wanted the S.U. or an empire back.

It might be more worthwhile to wait until after the war on Ukraine is over. A fresh set of interviews about Putin and Russia at that point would be extremely helpful

Indeed. The interviewer misspoke Victoria Nuland’s name as “Nufeld” in his question but the caption spelled it correctly. The really nice thing is that Mr. Baker did not immediately correct him. He replied to the question and later very subtly said Ms Nufeld’s name correctly.

I've come realize that this is the only way to keep up on all of what went on. All the contributors to the 'Putin Files' have kept the setup and moving pieces in mind. Marcos Mota the different points of view on Putin are so helpful to me as well. They don’t all agree on the finer points, which I think is telling as to the credibility of PBS. These interviews are amazing.

Who is the person doing the interviewing? I've watched several of these videos, and it comes out every so often that the interviewer has a point of view and views some answers as correct.
If you watch the other episodes, you will see what other people -- who were in a position know -- said about things. You will see why the interviewer asks questions that cross-check other people's statements, and doesn't mind that this answer checks out.
This guy is good. Reasonable, head on his shoulders, sound.

Watched the whole thing. Mr. Baker is so objective in his storytelling anyone even remotely familiar with events he portrays turns into Putin apologist. Blaming Putin for being hard headed relic of KGB training/brainwashing only works if you don't come off as a cold war mentality victim yourself. Zero attempts to perceive events from other people's perspectives. I've watched most documentary interviews PBS released. This one is special.
Although the interview was 4 years ago the interview with Marshall Gesson gives an in depth view on Putin. Worth the time.

A read must and a must read . Neutral answers, with a colourway of spotting what probably may be happening behind confusing appearances of world leaders.
I think it's clear enough to believe more than ever in democracy and not let the chaotic view and flaws of this democratic ways, get in the way of strengthening it and making it even better and more effective.
More interviews like this could bring us together in the name of our unperfect , but always improving democracies.
Other systems may seem perfect, until u look under their carpets.
Let's learn from this authentic well documented way of feedback giving, and understand it all better, to make our democracies much stronger and stand together in its defense.
And,who knows, maybe when others finally see the strength and health of it, others are also convinced to follow this path to become more healthy and prosper society.
Not neutral. He focused too much on what Trump was saying with regard to Russia and the hacking and not enough on what Trump actually did with respect to the sanctions against Russia once he got in office.
We had a very good conversation on the phone with Russia and China. Everyone loves me such a great conversation on the phone with all our enemies.

The number one takeaway I have from watching all of these background interviews is that every one of these national treasures has forgotten more about Putin and Russia than I have ever learned, and I have passionately studied political science and international relations for my entire adult life. The only analogy that comes to mind for how I feel watching these interviews is the gratitude I feel for filmmakers like those who put together March of the Penguins, or many National Geographic specials. Without the intelligence, dedication and heroic efforts of these subject-matter experts, the rest of us mere mortals would barely have more knowledge than that which fits on a bumper sticker, or in a 5 minute segment on what laughably passes for investigative journalism these days. Thank you, Frontline and PBS. Without you, our Republic would truly be in peril. (Well, in even greater peril.)

So much of what Baker says about Russian aggression 8 years ago could have been uttered today (Februar-Marych 2022) ... downright scary.
