  • Every afternoon, Thomas the Tank Engine puffs along his branch line with his two coaches, Annie and Clarabel. First, they pass the watermill, next they come to a big farm and then, they can see a bridge with a village nestled on either side of it. Whenever children hear Thomas coming along, they stand on the bridge to wave at him until he is out of site. One day, Thomas is waiting at a signal just before the village bridge and was chatting with some children. Percy the Small Engine is waiting too and when the signal slows clear, he teases Thomas that if he is late, Sir Topham Hatt may find a new engine to replace the blue tank engine. Thomas scoffs at Percy's notion but is secretly concerned.
The next day, Thomas hurries along his line and as he approaches the village and bridge, he sees an inspector on the freight station platform, waving a red flag. Next, Thomas sees some children waving to him on the bridge as well, but he is rather puzzled as he knows that he is at a station used only for goods, not passengers. The children call out to Thomas, stating that they're happy to see him and ask him to take them home, to which the stationmaster explains to Thomas' driver that the school bus has broke down and all the parents would be worried if their children were late. Thomas agrees to help and waits as the children walk down from the bridge, climb on board Annie and Clarabel, and soon, Thomas sets off to the next station where Bertie is waiting to take them home. When Thomas finishes his journey, he is very late and worries that Sir Topham Hatt will be cross with him, which Percy knew would happen and told James that he warned Thomas.
However, the next morning when Thomas arrives to pick up his passengers, Sir Topham Hatt is nowhere to be seen, which makes Thomas feel very relieved. Thomas sets off on his journey and everything is going well until he comes to a stretch of the branch line where the rails have buckled from the hot temperature. Thomas and his driver notice the rails but they're too late to stop in time and Thomas derails on the buckled tracks. Thomas' driver remarks that they won't be traveling on the branch line anymore for the time being, which makes Thomas concerned for his passengers, but his driver reassures him that they'll be looked after.
Before long, workmen have started to repair the line and the engines are sent to different locations with Percy being sent to harbor to help Duck with the goods work, Daisy is sent to help with passenger services on Edward's branch line, Toby stays on the Ffarquhar branch to help with the repairs and Thomas is sent to do shunting duties in the main yard. Bertie the bus comes to the yards to see his friend and knows that Thomas needs his help once more, which Thomas sadly agrees. Bertie takes Thomas' passengers for him along the branch line, but he makes more stops to let passengers off closer to their homes, and Thomas worries that he lost his passengers to Bertie for good.
However, after the line is repaired, Sir Topham Hatt announces to Thomas that his timetable will be changed so that he and Bertie can work together more often. To Thomas' relief, the passengers say that while Bertie is a good bus, they missed Thomas and are glad to have him back. Later that day, Thomas speaks to Bertie and thanks the bus for looking after his passengers. Bertie smiles and prefers that while he likes making new friends, he likes sharing them with the tank engine, to which Thomas tells Bertie that he is truly a good friend and always will be.
